KNEE PAIN Dr. Scott Paris

QUESTION: What’s the best way to treat knee arthritis? Consider a non-surgical treatment that really works!

O s teoarthritis of the knee is the #1 leading cause of disability in the U.S. Over 27 million people suffer with knee arthritis and that number continues to grow. With knee arthritis, the cartilage breaks down and wears away, leaving the bones to rub together causing pain swelling stiffness and limited range of motion. As the cartilage breaks down, the knee loses its lubricating fluid. We found that by replacing this lubricating fluid with a natural substance called Hyaluronate, the lubrication is restored and many patients experience amazing pain relief.

DOES IT HURT? Many of our patients report that they feel little to no pain at all! We do everything possible to minimize any pain from the procedure, from pain relieving spray and a local anesthetic, to precision guidance that ensures we are always in the right spot. WILL MY INSURANCE COVER HYALURONATE? This procedure is covered by most major insurance companies including Medicare. Our insurance department pre-verifies every patient. WHO WILL BE PERFORMING THE HYALURONATE PROCEDURE? Dr. Scot Paris is the medical physician who performs the Hyaluronate injection. Dr. Paris is trained as a general surgeon and has extensive experience with a variety of surgical procedures. With his conservative approach, he has excelled in the non-surgical treatment of knee pain with the use of fluoroscopy guided Hyaluronate injections. SO HOW DO I KNOW IF YOUR KNEE PAIN TREATMENT PROGRAM WILL HELP ME? If you are tired of suffering with painful arthritis of the knee, and you want to see if the latest advances in non-surgical treatment can help, all you have to do is call 732-683-1800 to set up a risk free consultation. During the consultation

WHAT IS HYALURONATE AND HOW DOES IT WORK? Hyaluronate is a natural lubricating fluid that acts as a lubricant and shock absorber inside the knee joint. The substance in Hyaluronate is normally found in high levels in healthy joints. Replacing the hyularonic acid with Hyaluronate lubricates the joint and reduces pain. Hyaluronate has been administered over 40 million times and has been proven to provide long-lasting relief of knee pain from osteoarthritis. WHAT IF YOU ALREADY TRIED KNEE INJECTIONS? If you have had injections like this in the past and experienced poor results, there is still hope! Many doctors in this area offer similar injections, but very few use precision fluoroscopy guidance. Fluoroscopy guidance ensures that the pain relieving Hyaluronate reaches the knee capsule where it bonds with the joint fluid to create a lubricating and cushioning layer. Without fluoroscopy, it is estimated that doctors “miss” the capsule over 30% of the time resulting in poor results. We want each and every one of our patients to have the greatest chance of success, so every injection is done with precision fluoroscopy guidance to ensure that the Hyaluronate gets into the capsule 100% of the time. Because of this, patients who previously felt little to no relief with non-flouroscopy guided injection are now getting excellent results. The other “big difference” in our results is the multitude of other supportive care options that we have available to enhance the effectiveness of the Hyaluronate procedure. These options include state of the art medical laser treatment, physical therapy, manipulation, corrective osteoarthritis bracing (takes pressure off the damaged section of the knee), and natural anti-inflammatory products. The combination of these treatments offers you what we feel is the most comprehensive non-surgical knee treatment program available.

all of your questions will be answered in a warm and friendly environment. Knee replacement surgery is a very extreme measure to take without considering all of your other options first. Once it’s done there is no turning back. For that reason we encourage you to schedule an appointment to see if you are a candidate for Hyaluronate treatment.

We are proud to offer our patients a comprehensive knee pain treatment program that includes the best non surgical methods to relieve pain all under one roof. We look forward to having the opportunity to help you feel better. Take the first step in ending your knee pain and call to schedule an appointment today!

FIRST WOMAN TO TEST DRIVE HER HUSBAND’S PROTOTYPE PATENT — MOTORWAGEN Bertha Benz

to take the car for a test drive. Her children wheeled the car out of the garage, started it up, and they were off down the dirt road. They drove from Mannheim to Pforzheim in a Model III, without telling her husband and without permission of the authorities. Before this historic trip, motorized drives were merely very short trials made with assistance of mechanics.

Bertha Benz was a German automotive pioneer and inventor. She was also the business partner and wife of automobile inventor, Carl Benz. On August 5, 1888, 39-year-old Bertha, was the first person to drive an internal- com bustion- engine automobile over a long distance of 65 miles. She took her two young teenage sons, Richard and Eugen, with her. Her husband had the car sitting in the garage for months, still thinking that it wasn’t ready for the road. She, apparently, thought that it was. Without him knowing, she decided

Car, sold in small production runs, was the Model III. It had powered rear wheels with a ringed steel and a solid rubber, steerable front wheel. Various options from which to choose from were provided for customers, such as seat arrangements and a folding top. It was a family- held business called, Benz and Sons for a while. Carl Benz had died in 1929, right after the suc cess of a merge with Daimler Motoren Company (Daimler-Benz Compa ny). Bertha Benz died in her villa in Ladenburg in 1944. Members of the Benz family resided in the villa for 25 more years. The Benz home now has been designated as historic and is used as a scientific meeting facility for a nonprofit foundation, the Daimler and Benz Foundation, which aims to promote science and research in order to gain a better understanding of the correlation between man, the environment and technology. In 1925, Carl Benz wrote the following in his memoirs: "Only one person remained with me in the small ship of life when it seemed destined to sink. That was my wife. Bravely and resolutely, she set the new sails of hope.” In 2008, the Bertha Benz Memorial Route was officially approved as a route of the industrial heritage of humankind, because it follows Bertha Benz's path during the world's first long-distance journey by automobile in 1888. Now it is possible to follow the 194 km of signs indicating her route from Mannheim via Heidelberg to Pforzheim (Black Forest) and back. The Bertha Benz Challenge , embedded in the framework of the ceremony of Automobile Summer 2011, the big official German event and birthday par ty commemorating the invention of the automobile by Carl Benz over 135 years ago, took place on Bertha Benz Memorial Route on 10 and 11 Septem ber 2011. It was a globally visible signal for new automobile breakthroughs, and was only open for sustainable mobility — future-oriented vehicles with alternative drive systems, i.e., hybrid and electric, hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles, and other extremely economical vehicles. The motto is Bertha Benz Challenge — Sustainable Mobility on the World's Oldest Automobile Road! On 25 January 2011, Deutsche Welle (DW-TV) broadcast worldwide in its series, Made in Germany , a TV documentary on the invention of the automobile by Carl Benz, highlighting the very important role of his wife, Bertha Benz. The report is not only on the history of the automobile, but takes a look at its future as well, shown by the Bertha Benz Challenge on 10 and 11 September 2011. The documentary The Car is Born , produced by Ulli Kampelmann cen tered on the first road trip by Bertha Benz. In honor of International Women’s Day in 2019, the modern Daimler company commissioned a four-minute advertisement dramatizing portions of Bertha Benz’ 1888 journey. Present day- The Mercedes-Benz Group, AG (previously named Daim ler-Benz, DaimlerChrysler and Daimler) is a German multinational auto motive corporation headquartered in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Ger many. It is one of the world's leading car manufacturers. Daimler-Benz was formed with the merger of Benz & Cie. and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in 1926. The company was renamed DaimlerChrysler upon acquiring the American automobile manufacturer Chrysler Corporation in 1998, and was again renamed Daimler AG upon divestment of Chrysler in 2007. In 2021, Daimler AG was the second-largest German automaker and the sixth-largest worldwide by production. In February 2022, Daimler was re named Mercedes-Benz Group. By unit sales, the Mercedes-Benz Group is the thirteenth-largest car manufacturer and still going strong today!

Although the real purpose of the trip was to visit her mother, Bertha Benz had other motives to prove to her husband, who had many doubts about marketing his invention, that the automobile would become a useful thing to the general public. They had a lot of money invested in his invention and she felt it was time to market it. On her first trip, she had numerous problems with the car, such as a clogged valve and an ignition fail. Bertha found solutions to fix both, show ing her significant technical capabilities along the way. With no fuel tank and only a 4.5-litre supply of petrol in the carburetor, she had to find ligroin, the petroleum solvent needed for the car to run. The solvent was only avail able at apothecary shops, so she stopped in Wiesloch at the city pharmacy to purchase the fuel. At the time, petrol and other fuels could only be bought from pharmacists. She cleaned a blocked fuel line with her hat pin and used her garter as insulation material. A blacksmith had to help mend a chain at one point. When the wooden brakes began to fail, Benz visited a cobbler to install leather, making the world's first pair of brake linings. An evaporative cool ing system was employed to cool the engine, making water supply a big worry along the trip, so the trio added water to their supply every time they stopped. The car's two gears were not enough to surmount uphill inclines, and Eugen and Richard often had to push the vehicle up steep roads. Benz reached Pforzheim somewhat after dusk, notifying her husband of her suc cessful journey by telegram. She drove back to Mannheim several days later. The novel trip received a great deal of publicity, which is just what she wanted. The drive was a key event in the technical development of the au tomobile. She reported everything that had happened along the way and made important suggestions to make the car even better, such as the intro duction of an additional gear for climbing hills and brake linings to improve brake-power. Her trip demonstrated to the burgeoning automotive indus try that longer test drives were essential to their business. In doing so, she brought the Patent-Motorwagen worldwide attention and got the company its first sales. Cäcilie Bertha Ringer was born on May 3rd, 1849, to a wealthy family in Pforzheim in the Grand Duchy of Baden. Before she was married to Benz, she used part of her dowry to invest in a failing iron construction company. As an unmarried woman, she was able to do this, but after she married Benz, according to German law, Bertha lost her legal power to act as an investor. They married in1872, and he continued to use her dowry as financial sup port for his inventions. They named their company, Benz and Cie (short for her real first name). He finished work on his first horseless carriage in December 1885. In addition to improving on the wire insulation, inventing leather brake pads to supplement the wooden brakes when they failed, Bertha also helped redesign the fuel line, and continued to help finance the development of the Motorwagen. She would hold patent rights under modern law, but as a married woman, she was not allowed to be named as an inventor on the patent at that time. The Benz’s had five children: Eugen (1873–1958), Richard (1874–1955), Clara (1876–1968), Thilde (1882–1974), and Ellen (1890–1973). Within the decade, 25 vehicles had been built. With cutting-edge bicy cle constructions, the Model I was the original Patent Motor Car and the world's first automobile. The Model II was converted to a four-wheeler for test purposes, making it the only one of this model. The first Patent Motor

THE HISTORY OF SCISSORS By, Pam Teel

Despite what some historians say, scissors were not invented by Leonardo Da Vinci, but he did use a shear like scissor, already invented, to cut through his canvases. The earliest known scissors appeared about 3,000 to 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. (Which now refers to modern-day Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey, and Syria, as well as parts of Iran.) These were called spring scissors, comprised of two bronze blades connected at the handles by a thin- flexible strip of curved bronze, which served to hold the blades in alignment, to allow them to be squeezed together, and to pull them apart when released. Spring scissors could possibly be the earliest known pair of scissors.

only ancient Rome, but also China, Japan, and Korea, and the pivot scissor idea is still used in almost all modern scissors. Pivoted scissors were not manufactured in large numbers until 1761, when Robert Hinchliffe, of Sheffield, produced the first pair of modern-day scissors which were made of hardened and polished cast steel. His major challenge was to form the bows; first, he made them solid, then drilled a hole, and then filed away metal to make this large enough to admit the user's fingers. This process was laborious and couldn’t keep up with the demand for them. Hinchliffe improved his method of making scissors in order to

Unlike today’s scissors, these ancient cut ting tools worked where two blades were connected at the end, but apart on the cut ting edge. The scissors cut material only when the fingers pull inwards to squeeze the tool together. They are similar to the con cept of tweezers or pliers. They were craft ed by the most skilled individuals during their time in order to create a tool with two blades that could make clean, neat cuts. These types of scissors have been modified through time and are still being used. Some sewing scissors and embroidery scissors still use the design for seamless and light weight cutting. Around the year 1500, BC, Ancient Egyp tian scissors, very similar to older Mesopo tamian versions, were also discovered. The Egyptian scissors were almost identical to modern shears — in that they were large and heavy duty, clearly for outdoor use and not cutting hair. It’s believed that if Ancient Egyptians did cut their hair, they would have used a single blade or knife. Spring scissors continued to be used in Europe until the 16th century. However, pivoted scissors of bronze or iron, in which

increase production. He set up a sign iden tifying himself as a "fine scissor manufactur er and achieved strong sales in London and elsewhere. Sheffield was actually home to the first mass production of scissors. By the 19th century, there were an esti mated 60 steel scissor companies in Shef field. However, since the 1980s, industry globalization and a shift towards cheaper, mass-produced scissors created price de flation that many artisanal manufacturers could not compete with. The Sheffield scis sor industry consisted of just two local com panies in 2021. The two remaining Sheffield scissor man ufacturers are William Whiteley, founded in 1760, and Ernest Wright, which was es tablished in 1902. Both now focus on high end/niche crafting of “products for life” rather than mass production. Between these two firms, it is estimated that there are no more than ten “Putters” who are the mas ter-trained craftspeople responsible for high quality Sheffield scissor assembly. Today China is the leading manufacturer of scis sors. The word, scissor, came about in the late

the blades were pivoted at a point between the tips and the handles, the direct ancestor of modern scissors, were invented by the Romans. Ancient Romans are believed to be among the first civilizations to enhance the bar baric form of scissors from Mesopotamia to the pivoted scissors we use today. Scissors have been found from the Roman period around the year AD100 with a pivot. The Romans adapted the Egyptians' design and made them better creating pivoted or cross-blade scissors that were more in line with what we have today. The Romans also used bronze, but they sometimes made their scissors from iron as well. Roman scissors had two blades that slid past each other. The pivot was situated between the tip and the handles to create a cutting effect between the two blades when they were applied to various properties. Both Egyptian and Roman versions of scissors had to be sharpened regularly. Unlike many other ancient civilizations, the Romans, with their updated scissors, were the first to use them for hairstyling, rather than for everyday jobs such as cutting rope and farming. They entered common use in not

14th century. It was derived from the old French word “Cisoires” which de scribe hand operated shearing tools. Scissors have advanced greatly in terms of design and functionality since they were first invented. Move over Ed ward Scissorhands, most every family, all over the world, has at least one or more scissors in their household. There is even some superstition attached to the scissors. More than one expectant mother has placed a pair of scissors beneath her pillow at night somewhere toward the end of her ninth month of pregnancy. Superstition says that this will “cut the cord” with her baby and prompt labor. And here's another folklore tale: Don’t hand those scissors to your best friend. Place them on any available surface and let your friend pick them up. Otherwise, you risk severing your relationship. Some say that those scissors languishing in your catch-it-all drawer can help keep evil spirits out of your home, especially if you hang them by one handle near your door so they form a version of a cross.

HOW TV DINNERS CAME ABOUT By, Pam Teel

In the late 1930’s, a man from West Orange, NJ, named Wil liam L. Maxson, grew too much cauliflower in his New Jersey garden. Not wanting to waste it, he decided to cook it, season it, and freeze it. He was lucky to have a freezer compartment on his refrigerator because back then, not all refrigerators came with a freezer (back in the day, it was commonly known as the ice box). It was a whole year later when he took out the frozen vegetable and heated it up. He was surprised that it still tasted as fresh as the day he put in in the icebox. This was a big surprise to him and led him to start experimenting with freezing other foods as well. Born in 1889, in Minnesota, Maxson graduated from the An napolis Naval Academy in 1921, and served as a midshipman until 1935, when he resigned his commission and entered the private sector. Settling in New Jersey with his wife and three children, he founded the W. L. Maxson Corporation, and be gan churning out inventions. Some of his inventions included; a multiplying machine, toy building blocks, and a robot naviga tor that allowed airplane pilots to calculate their air positions in

In 1947, he also made an exclusive deal with Pan American Airlines and the Sky Plate was served on many commercial flights, but for civilian use, he repackaged and renamed the frozen dinners, the Strato Meal. Meanwhile, Maxson began marketing his frozen dinners to grocery stores and supermarkets and announced plans to ex pand his line of frozen meals to 50 items. He also made plans to sell his Whirlwind ovens to households as well, for $15-$25 dollars. His inventions were featured in Popular Mechanics and Popular Science. By 1947, it looked like everything was go ing according to plan. A few specialty stores had even begun selling his frozen meals, but in July 1947, tragedy struck. Wil liam Maxson passed away following an operation. His three children had little interest in continuing his business. They sold off his inventions, thus bringing his company to an end. At least Maxson got to enjoy close to seven years of being the only frozen food company out there, but soon others followed. It was a good time. The war was over, veterans were buying

up new homes, wives didn’t have to work anymore. Most stayed home to take care of the children. Companies started to pop out frozen dinners all over. Quaker States Foods came up with frozen meals to satisfy the working man and busy housewife, all in a light aluminum tray and covered with an aluminum lid. Other frozen dinner companies sprang up, such as Frigi Dinner, Morton’s, Chum King, and Birdseye. Birdseye was freezing fish, and then eventually vegetables since the 1930’s, but since many people did not have a freezer, the idea never took off. None were as successful as Swanson’s. This was a trusted brand and they had the money to advertise, and advertise they did, when in 1953 they launched their own TV dinner. Rumor had it that Swansons was stuck with over 520,000 lbs. of frozen turkey parts left over from after Thanksgiving and they were trying to fig ure out how to get rid of them all. One of their salesmen, Gerry Thomas, on his return from a business flight, most likely a Pan American one, was served one of the Maxson Sky Plates on board and suddenly had an idea. He went back to the Swanson brothers and their multimillions dollar company, pitching the idea of making tv dinners, to use up all the frozen turkey parts. Many people credit him for coming up with the invention of tv dinners, but in fact, it was invented 10 years prior by William Maxson. Thomas did, however, get credited for being the first to call it a TV Dinner. Being that tv’s were a hot item of that era and everyone could afford one, and snack tables were selling out like hotcakes, people got into the habit of eating in front of the tv. The Swanson Company did some marketing and repackaged the cardboard box the dinner came in to look like a tv set. The first frozen food made by the company was a sliced turkey selection in gravy, along with some stuffing and a vegetable. During the last 5 months of 1953, they sold 5,000 frozen turkey tv dinners at 97 cents each. Guess they used up all those turkey parts. In 1954, there were 10 million sold. In 1955, 25 million frozen tv dinners sold. Swanson’s obliterated other companies. At the end of 1955, Swanson’s sold the frozen tv dinner division to Camp bell soup for some stock in Campbells. They no longer had any connection to the tv dinners. By 1960, Campbells made the tv dinners even more ap petizing by adding desserts. How many of you remember saving the dessert See DINNERS on Page 23 

flight. Maxson's success improved dramatically during World War II, when he invented the Maxson Multiple Gun Mount — a mobile pillbox that al lowed allied gunners to safely shoot down enemy aircraft during bombing raids. Over 4,000 were put into use against Germany and Japan. Maxson also thought of a better way to serve those in the military who were living off k- rations, condensed foods, condensed cereals, canned meats, and biscuits. He was already serving his guests at home with his frozen dinners, of fering different meal varieties to his guests. In 1944, Maxson decided to take his idea to the navy. He developed special three section plates containing a meat course and two servings of vegetables. The food was partially cooked, then fro zen. The navy signed a contract with him for the meals. They were quick and easy and best of all, tasty. Servicemen could choose from six different meals: steak, veal cutlets, ham steak, meatloaf, beef stew, and frankfurters with beans. To heat up his frozen sky plates, Maxson created the Maxson Whirlwind Oven. It was made of aluminum and steel and weighed 35 pounds. It heated the food using a 120-volt DC motor, a standard feature on aircraft during the 1940's, and could be powered by gas, kerosene, or electricity. The oven could hold six meals at a time and cook them in about fifteen minutes, half the time of a regular oven. Eventually, Maxson would go on to create a larger whirlwind oven for the Navy where they could heat up 120 dinners at one time. Maxson's secret was a fan installed in the back of the unit that circulat ed hot air around the food. At the time, it was special enough that Popular Science Magazine called it "magic." Nowadays, it's called "forced-convection," and it reduced cooking times in a couple of ways. By adding a fan, Maxson prevented hot air from accumulating in one section of the oven. Instead, it got spread evenly over the food. Moving the air also increased the rate of heat transfer between the air and the food. In an ordinary oven, food absorbs heat through the process of natural convection, the tendency of hot air to rise and cold air to sink. As hot air rises, its energy gets taken in by the food. As the air loses energy, it sinks back down again and gets warmed up by the heating el ement, which causes it to rise and transfer more energy: a typical convection current. Forced convection accelerates this process, blowing the air through a heating element and onto your food. This brings the food into contact with warm air faster and forces it away once it's cooled down.
