(609) 443-5330 (609) 443-5331 The bottom line is that, regardless of what type of motor vehicle violation you are charged with, you should seek the advice of an attorney before appearing in Municipal Court by yourself and entering into a plea bargain which may subject you to other legal ramifications of which you were not aware. Typically, when we receive a call for a motor vehicle violation, we initially attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the potential client to determine whether or not they will require legal representation given their individual circumstances. Accordingly, please feel free to contact us to discuss your individual situation to determine whether or not legal representation is required. “I ran my first ad in The Millstone Times and got calls the first day the paper reached homes. BY JOHN BAZZURRO As indicated on our website, there are numerous charges that are heard in the Municipal Courts in the State of New Jersey. These range from low level motor vehicle violations such as going through a stop sign, careless driving, failure to maintain your lane and other charges that generally carry very low fines and two or less motor vehicle points. If you have been charged with any motor vehicle violation that carries more than two motor vehicle points upon a conviction, we suggest that you obtain the advice of counsel before going to court. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with some information as to whether or not they need legal representation in Municipal Court on a low-level motor vehicle violation that carries two or less motor vehicle points. As most citizens of New Jersey know, municipal prosecutors will, generally, as a matter of course offer a “no point” or “zero point” violation as part of a plea bargain if you are charged with one of these low-level motor vehicle violations. The monetary cost of these “no point” or “zero point” violations are rather excessive in that you are required to pay a $250.00 surcharge for this “privilege.” The statute which provides this “no point” plea is called the unsafe driving statute. The basic theory in accepting a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain is to potentially avoid motor vehicle points on your license in order to keep your auto insurance premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. However, it should be pointed out that there are a number of situations in which your acceptance of such a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain may adversely affect your rights without your knowledge. One such situation is where you have already previously pled guilty to unsafe driving on more than one occasion. Your third guilty plea to unsafe driving within a certain period of time will subject you to four motor vehicle points when you may be under the mistaken belief that you will not be receiving any motor vehicle points. Another such situation where you potentially will need legal representation is where the low-level motor vehicle violation is the result of a motor vehicle accident. 10% SENIOR DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE 732-207-4006 CALL YURY TODAY FOR A FREE IN HOME ESTIMATE! • INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR PAINTING • SPACKLE • CARPENTRY • ALL FLOORING • DECKS & FENCES • MASONRY • BASEMENTS • STORM DAMAGE • POWERWASHING • ROOFING AND SIDING • BATHROOM REMODELING • KITCHEN REMODELING CLEAN-UP

LOVE FLOWETH, FROM HEAVEN TO EARTH By Richard Mabey Jr.

In June of 1970, I completed my junior year at Boonton High School. My fami ly belonged to the Trailmates Chapter of the National Camping and Hikers Asso ciation. There were about 12 families that belonged to this group of family campers. The Landers family was one of the families who would go camping with all of us. Penny Landers had just completed her sophomore year of high school. She was very smart, kindhearted and very pretty. During our time of family campouts, Pen ny and I would play chess together, on a picnic table at a vacant campsite, that we were always able to find, no matter what state park our families were camping at that particular weekend. Penny was an in credibly great chess player.

fully so. It was a Saturday afternoon. We watched a movie in Penny’s living room, sitting together on the couch, while Mr. Lancaster sat in his easy chair. Then we went out to Penny’s backyard. Penny had this game setup in her yard, it was like horseshoes, they called it Ring Toss. Instead of playing with horseshoes, you would toss this circular rope at the stakes, to try to get the ring onto them. It was a fun time. Then we ate supper. Mrs. Landers was very kind to me. I can’t say that Mr. Land ers made me feel all that welcome. His el dest daughter was coming of age and hav ing a boy over for an official date. I don’t think that settled too well with him. Penny and I dated for two years, through my senior year at Boonton High and my freshman year at County College of Mor ris. In September of 1972, Penny left for Rutgers University. We had promised to stay faithful to each other. Sometimes the most earnest of promises get broken. Sad ly, we drifted apart. We stayed friends till Penny’s passing in November of 2012. Sadly, Penny lost her

And in 1970, sports were everything at Boonton High School. I lost myself in poetry, novels and in playing the snare drum in the school marching band. I wanted all so much to ask Pen ny for a date, but I felt so strongly that I was way out of her league. I would think to myself, “What would a smart, pretty girl like Penny Lancaster, ever see in me?” Although I never mentioned it to my father, Dad knew that I liked Pen ny a lot. It was during our annual week-long hike of the Appalachian Trail that Dad talked to me about Penny. It was now July of 1970, we pitched camp somewhere in the forest of Eastern Pennsylvania. Dad and I were alone together, outside of our makeshift tents, cooking stew. And Dad told me, in no uncertain terms, that I had to stop putting myself down. That I had to dig deep within myself and get the courage to ask Penny for a date. Well, at the next campout of the Trailmates Chapter, I found myself play ing chess with Penny. Somehow and someway, I managed to get the cour age to ask Penny for a date. My palms were filled with sweat. My heart was beating like a big, old bass drum. I inwardly trembled, after the words came out of my mouth. There was that two second pause from Penny. Then, her response came, quietly, almost shyly, “yea, that’d be nice.” I was 16, Penny was 15, when we had our first date. Mom drove me to Pen ny’s house in Paterson. Penny’s father was a bit strict with her. And, right Your Tru BrianD Inevitably, our conversations during our chess games would focus on books that we had recently read. At the time, I was total ly absorbed into Thomas Wolfe’s novels. I was in the midst of reading, Look Home ward, Angel . To my surprise, Penny had already read the book. I think that was a turning point for me. Looking back, the moment that Penny had told me that she had read Look Homeward, Angel, was the very moment that I fell off the Grand Canyon, in love with Penny. #Local SEO #Google Ads

battle with lung cancer. Although all traces of romance had evaporated, a kind of kinship still lived in our hearts for each other. We became adopted cousins to each other. I would write email letters of encouragement to Penny, during her time of her fight with cancer. She would write me back that she dearly appreciated my kindness. I know that this may not coincide with the religious beliefs of many peo ple. But since I was diagnosed with Severe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, I have had many, many visitations from Penny. I’ll be working on a story, and I’ll feel Penny’s presence powerfully strong beside my desk. Almost every night, Penny visits me in dreams, so real and vivid that it seems like it’s all so real and not just a dream. Penny assures me that there is a God and a place we call Heaven. Can God be limited? Can God be put into a box, of our liking? Is it pos sible that a dear and cherished friend, residing in Heaven, can become a guiding angel? I know what I experience is powerfully real. Spiritual love, not a romantic love, but a true spiritual love between two people cannot be limited, be boxed in. Love is the most powerful force in the universe. It is the foundation of miracles. It knows no limitations. Love is the most endearing force known to mankind. Truly, it is the foundation of miracles. WOMEN CHANGING HISTORY THE YEAR WAS 1966 By Pam Teel

What might seem archaic in this day and age, was the norm just fifty years ago. There were those individual women who bravely stood up in defiance of things and events that were deemed for men only. Take the Bos ton Marathon, for example, until 1972, under the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union rules), the Boston Marathon was for men only. Women were not qualified to run in any men’s division races, not just in Boston, but all over America. The Boston Marathon, a prestigious an nual marathon race held in Massachusetts since 1897, usually around St. Patrick’s Day, has a course that winds through various roads, in cluding Route 135, Route 16, Route 30, and city streets, and ultimately leads to the official finish line at Copley Square in Boston, alongside the Boston Public Library. Twenty-three year old, Roberta (Bobbi) Gibb attempted to register for the 1966 race but was refused by the race director, Will Cloney, in a letter in which he claimed women were physiologically incapable of running 26 miles, and that under the rules that governed amateur sports set out by the AAU, women were not allowed to run in a race that was more than a mile and a half. Gibb trained for two years to run the Boston Marathon, covering as much as 40 miles in one day. Her running included daily commuting of the eight miles to school. She ran in white leather Red Cross nurses’ shoes because there were no running shoes available for women at the time. She was already established as a long-distance runner. After the initial rejection of her application, Gibb realized that it was more important than ever to run that race and that her run would have a social significance far beyond just her own challenge. After three nights and four days on a bus from San Diego, California, Gibb arrived the day before the race at her parents’ house in Winchester, Mas sachusetts. On the morning of Patriots’ Day, April 19, 1966, her mother, reluctantly, dropped her off at the start in Hopkinton. Wearing her broth er’s Bermuda shorts and a blue hooded sweatshirt over a black, tanked-top swimsuit, and men’s sneakers, she hid in the bushes near the starting pen. After the starting gun fired, she waited until about half the pack had started and then jumped into the race. It didn’t take long for male runners in Gibb’s vicinity to realize that she was a woman. Gibb expected them to shoulder her off the road or call out to the police. Instead, the other runners told her that if anyone tried to interfere with her race, they would put a stop to it.

Encouraged by their friend liness and support, she re moved her sweatshirt. As soon as it became clear that a woman was running in the marathon, the crowd erupted with pure joy. Many men, not all, cheered her on, and women cried out in support. The press began to report on her progress towards Boston. The word spread to the Wellesley Col lege campus that a female was running in the race. It wasn’t long before crowds of college students, both male and female, lined the streets in support of her, waiting for her to pass by the campus. By the time Gibb reached the finish line in Boston, the Governor of Massachusetts, John Volpe, was there to

Rather than simply letting her run, officials tried to pull her from the race. Fortunately, Kathrine Switzer was running alongside her boyfriend, who helped fend off those around her.

shake her hand. At first, she feared that he would arrest her. She finished the race in three hours, twenty-one minutes, and forty seconds, ahead of two thirds of the runners. The following morning her feat was front-page news in the Record American, where the headline read: “Hub Bride First Gal to Run Marathon.” In another Record American article, a headline read: “Ro berta Gets Official Support: Females May Run Marathon.” Yet another read: “Roberta the runner may revolutionize Boston’s fabled BAA marathon- and for that matter, every other long-distance run staged in the country.” On the other hand, the furor over a woman’s intrusion into what had been an all-male domain was mounting. The May 2, 1966, issue of Sports Illustrated featured an article written by Gwilym S. Brown entitled “A Game Girl in A Man’s Game”: “Last week a tidy-looking and pretty 23-year-old blonde named Roberta Gibb Bingay, (her married name), not only started but also covered the 26-mile, 385-yard course at a clip fast enough to finish ahead of no fewer than 290 of the event’s 415 starters.” In another article from the Boston Traveler dated April 20, 1966, the day following the marathon, the race director, Will Cloney is quoted questioning the authenticity of Gibb even participating in the race. “Mrs. Bingay (Gibb) did not run in yesterday’s marathon. There is no such thing as a marathon for a woman. She may have run in a road race, but she did not race in the marathon. I have no idea of this woman running. She was not at any of our checkpoints and none of our checkers saw her. For all I know she could have jumped in at Kenmore Square.” Gibbs simply replied, “If you don’t believe me, ask the runners who saw me, or the spectators who were cheering for me. I don’t want to get into a public debate with Mr. Cloney about it. If he doesn’t believe me, that’s his business.”

Gibb, nevertheless, ran unregistered and finished the 1966 race in three hours, twenty-one minutes, and forty seconds, ahead of two-thirds of the runners. Much later, in 1996, she would be rec ognized by the Boston Athletic Associ ation as the pre-sanctioned era women’s winner in 1966,1967, and 1968. She was the first woman to run the entire Boston Marathon. Gibb’s run in 1966 challenged prevalent prejudices and misconceptions about women’s athletic capabilities. In 1967, Gibb, by then a full-time stu dent at the University of California, San Diego, ran again. She finished in three hours, twenty-seven minutes, and sev enteen seconds, almost an hour ahead of Kathrine Switzer, another female competitor who met the same prejudic es as Gibbs. Switzer, who registered for the race using her official AAU registra tion number, paying the entry fee, pro viding a properly acquired fitness certif icate, and signing her entry form with her usual signature ‘K. V. Switzer’, was the first woman to run and finish with a valid official race registration. As a re sult of Switzer’s completion of the race as the first officially registered woman runner, the AAU further enforced its rules to ban women from competing in

at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts. Gibb herself created the statue, being a gifted artist, abstract painter, and sculp turer. The life-size, bronze sculpture de picts Gibb as she crossed the finish line, wearing a pair of her brother’s Bermuda shorts, a bathing suit top, and a pair of men’s running shoes, which caused her feet to badly blister. She molded the face to reflect the pain she felt from her feet and the exhaustion. Gibb received her Bachelor of Sci ence (B.S.) degree from the University of California, San Diego, in 1969, ful filling the pre-medical requirements, with a major in philosophy and a minor in mathematics. She has stated that she was denied admission to medical school because of her gender. She then worked with Professor Jerome Lettvin at MIT on epistemology and color vision while studying law. In 1974, Gibb entered the New England School of Law, re ceiving her Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1978. She worked as a legislative aide in the Massachusetts State Legislature, stud ied natural systems, and pursued her interest in sculpture and painting. She was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1978. While raising her family, she practiced law, specializing in real and

further races against men. Switzer finished the race despite race official Jock Semple repeatedly assaulting her on the street in an attempt to rip off her race numbers and eject her from the race. She wasn’t going to be stopped. As the daughter of a major in the United States, failure was never an option for her. While studying at Syracuse University, a coach once told her that a “fragile woman” could never run in the Boston Marathon. This only encour aged her further. Undeterred, she trained in secret and entered the race. In 1968, Gibb ran again, finishing in three hours and thirty minutes, first among a growing number of women, which included Carol Ann Pancko, Elaine Pedersen, and Marjorie Fish. In 1969, 1970, and 1971, Sara Mae Berman was the women’s winner, and in 1972, Nina Kuscsik was the winner of the first officially sanctioned wom en’s division event. (Sara Mae Berman and Gibb became fast friends and would go on to have a lasting friendship) In 1996, at the 100th running of the Boston Marathon and the 30th an niversary of Gibb’s first run, the Boston Athletic Association officially rec ognized her three wins in 1966, 1967, and 1968 and finally awarded her a medal. Her name was inscribed with the names of the other winners on the Boston Marathon Memorial in Copley Square. In 2016, Gibb was the grand marshal of that year’s Boston Marathon. That year’s female winner, Atsede Baysa, gave Gibb her trophy; Gibb said that she would go to Baysa’s native Ethiopia in 2017 and return it to her. As it turned out, Baysa came to Boston and Gibb returned the trophy to her at that time. In 2021, a statue of Gibb called “The Girl Who Ran”, depicting her becoming the first woman to finish the Boston Marathon was unveiled

intellectual property. She worked, for part of that time, in patent law. Gibb sculpted the 12-inch bronze figurines of a pony-tailed girl running that were given as trophies to Joan Benoit Samuelson, Julie Brown, and Julie Isphording, the top three women marathoners at the US Olympic trials in 1984. Gibb has written a memoir entitled Wind in the Fire: A Personal Journey and a book titled 26.2 Essays: An Inspiring New World View. A film based on her memoir with the same title was currently in the works. She has been included in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World. In 1982 she was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Long Distance Running Hall of Fame, and she has been interviewed for news programs and documentaries on ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN, and HBO. She was included in the 1999 HBO Sports documentary Dare to Compete: The Struggle of Women in Sports. In 2000, she produced a documentary on her art and running entitled Where the Spirit Leads . Gibb received the 2009 Tufts University Athletics Distinguished Achieve ment Award[34] and was inducted into The Sports Museum of New En gland Hall of Fame in 2011. Her Special Achievement Award was presented by Joan Benoit Samuelson at the Sports Museum’s 10th Annual “The Tradi tion” on June 28, 2011. Gibb had a big mission; to overcome prejudice against women in sports. Thanks to her, other women got the courage to stand up and fight for their rights. The woman knows a thing or two about changing history. “If we can do it in Boston,” she told the crowd, “We can do it in the world.”

QUESTION: What is Optomap retinal imaging?

ANSWER:

The optomap ultra-widefield retinal image is a unique technology that captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image while traditional imaging methods typically only show 15% of your retina at one time. Your retina (located in the back of your eye) is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly. This means that in addition to eye conditions, signs of other diseases (for example, stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes) can also be seen in the retina. Early detection of life-threatening diseases like cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. It also facilitates early protection from vision impairment or blindness. Early signs of these conditions can show on your retina long before you notice any changes to your vision or feel pain. While eye exams include a look at the front of the eye to evaluate health and prescription changes, a thorough screening of the

As the holiday cheer fades away, the reality of credit card bills piling up can cast a shadow on our joyous memories. Many of us can relate to the rewarding experiences during the holidays, but the stress and worry that follow as credit card statements arrive are all too familiar for a person or family struggling to stay on top of their bills which were also often paid by mounting credit cards. Vacations can be the perfect opportunity to relax, disconnect from work and responsibilities, and enjoy some free time. But before you head off on your next fun trip, you should consider doing that might not sound quite as fun – creating an estate plan.
