(609) 443-5330 (609) 443-5331 The bottom line is that, regardless of what type of motor vehicle violation you are charged with, you should seek the advice of an attorney before appearing in Municipal Court by yourself and entering into a plea bargain which may subject you to other legal ramifications of which you were not aware. Typically, when we receive a call for a motor vehicle violation, we initially attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the potential client to determine whether or not they will require legal representation given their individual circumstances. Accordingly, please feel free to contact us to discuss your individual situation to determine whether or not legal representation is required. 659 Abbington Dr., #403 East Windsor, NJ 08520 (Twin Rivers Shopping Mall, Rt 33) HOURS: MONDAY - THURSDAY 11:00am-9:30pm FRIDAY-SATURDAY 11:00am-10pm SUNDAY 12pm-9:30pm 10% OFF Pick-up Only. Expires 1 2/ 15/23 Coupon Needs To Be Present WWW.CHENGCHENRESTAURANTS.COM Any Purchase As most citizens of New Jersey know, municipal prosecutors will, generally, as a matter of course offer a “no point” or “zero point” violation as part of a plea bargain if you are charged with one of these low-level motor vehicle violations. The monetary cost of these “no point” or “zero point” violations are rather excessive in that you are required to pay a $250.00 surcharge for this “privilege.” The statute which provides this “no point” plea is called the unsafe driving statute. The basic theory in accepting a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain is to potentially avoid motor vehicle points on your license in order to keep your auto insurance premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. However, it should be pointed out that there are a number of situations in which your acceptance of such a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain may adversely affect your rights without your knowledge. One such situation is where you have already previously pled guilty to unsafe driving on more than one occasion. Your third guilty plea to unsafe driving within a certain period of time will subject you to four motor vehicle points when you may be under the mistaken belief that you will not be receiving any motor vehicle points. Another such situation where you potentially will need legal representation is where the low-level motor vehicle violation is the result of a motor vehicle accident. BY JOHN BAZZURRO As indicated on our website, there are numerous charges that are heard in the Municipal Courts in the State of New Jersey. These range from low level motor vehicle violations such as going through a stop sign, careless driving, failure to maintain your lane and other charges that generally carry very low fines and two or less motor vehicle points. If you have been charged with any motor vehicle violation that carries more than two motor vehicle points upon a conviction, we suggest that you obtain the advice of counsel before going to court. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with some information as to whether or not they need legal representation in Municipal Court on a low-level motor vehicle violation that carries two or less motor vehicle points.

THERE IS NO T IN PIZZA By Pam Teel

Ahh Pizza. We all know what it is. We’ve all had it, whether covered in mushrooms, anchovies, and yes, pitifully, even pineapples. Piz za, our modern-day food favorite, but did you know it exist

Lombardi’s on Spring Street in Manhattan, licensed to sell pizza in 1905. (Prior to that, the dish was homemade or purveyed by unlicensed vendors.) Lombardi’s, still in operation today though no longer at its 1905 location, and has the same oven as it did originally. Debates over the finest slice in town can be heated, as any pizza fan knows. As far as I’m concerned, in my area of town, Vesu vio’s pizza/Millstone is our go to!

ed in ancient Greece? According to many studies, the word pizza is linked to the word pita, a food preva lent around the Mediterranean. From the eighth to fifth century BCE, the Greeks colonized southern Italy, bringing along their “plakous,” a round cheese pie with a crust that doubled as a handle. The word “pizza” was first found in the town of Gaeta in central Italy in the year 997 AD. The meaning of the word pizza is how ever a bit more unclear. The two leading theories are that it comes from the Lombardic word “piz zo,” meaning “mouthful” or “bite” or that it has the same origin as the Greek word “pitta,” that means a round, flatbread baked in a hot oven.

Pizza is no longer viewed as an ethnic treat; it’s well loved by people of all races and nation alities no matter what they put on it! “Pizza” as we know the word today is actu ally an Italian word. However, there’s no “t” sound in the Italian pronunciation either. In Italian, they pronounce it: /'pid.dza/. While in English, however, you usually hear the word pronounced more like /'pit.tsa/, with a “t”

wsiworld. (609) 286 b.desai@ #FaceBook Ad #Get More Le This regional street food made its way into the mainstream when in 1889, King Umberto and Queen Margherita of Italy visited Naples. Tired of their steady diet of French haute cuisine, the queen asked for an assortment of pizzas from the cities Pizzeria Brandi. Queen Margherita was offered many different varieties of street pizza, but she chose the one with tomatoes, moz zarella, and basil on it because she thought it resembled the Italian flag. Thus, Margherita pizza was born and lives on to this day. Now when you eat a slice of margherita pizza, just know you are eating a piece of history! Her love for this pizza literally put Naples on the map as a destination to try “real” pizza. The food became an icon of the city. Pizza’s increasing popularity in the U.S. came with the arrival of Italian immigrants at the be ginning of the 19th century. The traditional recipe was adapted to regional American tastes—deep dish in Chicago, Brooklyn style in New York, but it wasn’t until the end of World War II that pizza turned into a national phenomenon. Queen Margherita’s blessing could have been the start of an Italy-wide pizza craze, but pizza would remain little known in Italy beyond Naples’ borders until the 1940s. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers who were stationed in Italy lived off of street pizza due to food rations. When they returned home, they brought the recipe with them. The tasty food spread, along with the migration of Italians in the 1950s and 60s, and piz zerias opening in many American cities. Immigrants to the United States from Naples were replicating their trusty, crusty pizzas in New York and other American cities, including Trenton, New Haven, Boston, Chicago and St. Louis. The Neapolitans were coming for factory jobs, as did millions of Europeans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; they weren’t seeking to make a culinary statement. But relatively quickly, the flavors and aromas of pizza began to intrigue non-Neapolitans and non-Italians. One of the first documented United States pizzerias was G. (for Gennaro) Your Tru BrianD Pizza, spelled the way we recognize it today, first ap peared on a rental agreement in 997 BCE promising the landlord payment in pork and pizza. Its origins are as street food in Naples, Italy, during the early 18th century. Initially, it consisted of bread covered in pork fat or olive oil, topped with cheese, but that changed with the introduction of fresh tomatoes in 1760. For Digit #Local SEO #Google Ads

sound. In other words, different from Italian. The English pronunciation is actually closer to the Ne apolitan way of pronouncing the word. But if you hear someone from Naples, you’ll notice that they pronounced the”zz” sound more like ” /tts/”. So, when you use the word “pizza” in your everyday English, you’re actually using speaking Neopolitan dialect. You want a piece of history with your pizza pie, head to Pizzeria Brandi, the oldest and most illustrious pizzerias in Naples. In a city renowned for the wood oven-cooked delicacy, this is the grand-daddy; the Temple of Pizza. In business in the same spot since 1780, it started life as Pizzeria Pietro, after its founder (who was more affectionately known in the neighborhood sim ply as "il Pizzaiuolo" or the pizza guy). Having no heirs, he bequeathed his business to one Enrico Brandi and the place has been passed down through the generations ever since. But its not just its longevity that places it among the most prized pies, Brandi also the documented birthplace of Italy's most popular variety of pizza, the Margherita. When Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy were at a ball at the palace of Capodimonte in 1889, the pizzeria owners, Maria Giovanna Brandi and her husband Raffaele Esposito, were invited to provide pizzas as a novelty. They arrived in a decorated cart pulled by a mule and served three varieties of their product, including one created and named especially for the queen - the pizza Margherita, which featured tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella pieces and basil leaves (the colors of the new Italian flag, according to legend). The creation won the applause of the queen and an official document from a royal representative attesting to her delight. The decree is still on display in the pizzeria, and an official plaque is posted on the wall outside declaring the place of historical significance. Today, Pizzeria Brandi is still located on Salita Sant'Anna in one of those characteristic, super-narrow streets that teem with life in the heart of Na ples. It still draws crowds and still serves excellent pizza. The Margherita is still the reigning queen of pizzas, but there are many varieties, and if you can't decide you can opt for a tasting menu. There is Old World charm in side and a few tables scattered on the alley-street outside. Bon Appetit!

EXPOSURE TO POLLUTION HAS LONG-TERM EFFECT ON MULTIPLE GENERATIONS By John Voorheis

When severe forest fires last year blanketed Oregon and California with a thick layer of smoke, the high concentrations of fine particulate matter spewed into the air created one of the worst air pollution events in recent history. A large body of research has documented that breathing in these fine par ticulates has severe negative health impacts, leading to cardiovascular dis ease and respiratory illness, and, in some cases, death. Exposure to fine particulates has also been linked to lower educational attainment and reduced earnings. Now new research by the U.S. Census Bureau suggests that exposure to fine particulates not only harms those directly exposed but may also indi rectly impact the economic health of their children and grandchildren. In a recent U.S. Census Bureau working paper co-authored with Jonathan Colmer, an assistant professor at the University of Virginia, we explore the long-term and even the multigenerational, effects of pollution. Our findings: Pollution affects not only individuals exposed directly and those exposed while in the womb (“first generation”) but also the “second generation” or children of those directly exposed. In other words, if a woman is exposed to pollution while pregnant, it may affect both the child she’s carrying and her grandchildren. For example, according to the findings, children whose parents were ex

posed to less air pollution were more likely to attend college as adults and, consequently, have higher expected earnings. To examine this, we first identified hundreds of millions of links between par ents and children in the 2000 and 2010 decennial censuses. We then used the American Community Survey to measure whether the children later attended college and administrative records to identify where the parents were born. By combining these stats with measures of outdoor air quality from the Environmental Protection Agency, we were able to measure exposure to particulate matter when parents (the first generation) were in the womb. To examine what drives the effects of pollution exposure and its effects across generations, we first compared adopted second-generation individu als to biological children in the second generation. We found no substantial differences, suggesting that the intergenerational effects of pollution expo sure do not work through a biological channel. But we did find that how much parents earn and invest in their children has an impact. When the first generation was exposed to less pollution, they tended to have higher earnings and spend more time on child-enrichment activities, suggesting that the effect on the next generation is driven by these parental investments. This research is especially important in light of several other recent pa pers that have shown there are substantial disparities in pollution exposure across different demographic groups. A Census working paper from 2020 shows that African Americans were exposed to higher levels of particulate matter than Whites, although this gap has narrowed in the last two decades. Another paper, recently published in Science, shows that while air quali ty has improved dramatically since the 1980s, the most polluted neighbor hoods in 1981 were still the most polluted 30-40 years later. Together, these results suggest that disparities in exposure to environmen tal hazards may be an important driver of differences in economic oppor tunity. Poor people are exposed to more pollution, but pollution also harms the economic well-being of poor people and their children. Census Bureau data is invaluable in the study of the connections between the environment, population and the economy. To facilitate the use of this data, researchers in the Center for Econom ic Studies formed the Environment, Natural disasters and Energy Research Group (ENERG). The group works to foster new innovative research and disseminate environmental insights produced from Census data with a goal of developing new public-use data products. The research and statistics show how the environment — air and water pollution, a changing climate, and increasingly damaging natural disasters — affects America’s people and businesses. An important part of this research is to understand how these effects in teract with issues of environmental justice and the disproportionate envi ronmental burden on disadvantaged communities. Answering these ques tions offers an exciting new opportunity for the Census Bureau. John Voorheis is an economist in the U.S. Census Bureau’s Center for Eco nomic Studies.

WHAT IS ENDO BELLY? By Pam Teel

The term “endo belly” describes the painful and often severe abdominal bloating associat ed with endometriosis. This severe bloating is likely due to inflammation, growths, or other digestive issues resulting from en dometriosis. Endometriosis is a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can cause se vere pain in the pelvis and make it harder to get pregnant. Endometriosis can start at a person's first menstrual period and last until menopause. Women with endometriosis can expe rience pelvic or lower abdominal pain, pain with menses, pain with inter course, and pain during bowel move ments. Symptoms can be constant or “cyclical,” meaning that they worsen before and during the period, and then improve. Symptoms of endometriosis may include: very painful menstrual cramps, abdominal pain or back pain during your period, or in between pe riod, pain during sex, heavy bleeding during periods or spotting between periods, infertility-difficulty becom ing pregnant, and painful bowel movements. Some causes of endometriosis are as follows: 1.) Problems with menstrual period flow. (Retrograde menstrual flow is the most likely cause of endometriosis) 2.) Ge netic factors. Because endometriosis runs in fami lies, it may be inherited in the genes. 3.) Immune system problems 4.) Hormones and 5.) Surgery. Untreated endometriosis can cause significant pain, bloating, excess menstrual bleeding, and digestive distress. Over time, it can also affect a person's fertility. When endometriosis tissue grows outside the uterus, it can affect other or gans — especially the ovaries and reproductive system. Many cases of endometriosis remain over looked, because the symptoms of endo belly are similar to those of gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Along with heavy menstrual periods, pain, and infer tility, endometriosis can cause symptoms such as, bloating, especially abdominal bloating. Ab dominal bloating is the most common symptom

of endo belly. Bloating happens when the lower abdomen swells with gas or air. When this happens, the abdomen looks bigger than usual and might feel tight or swollen. Endometriosis-related abdominal bloating may re sult from the gastrointestinal issues related to endometriosis as well as issues such as inflammation, cysts, and fibroids. Inside the uterus, this tissue normally builds up and sheds each month during the menstrual period. The endometrial-like tissue also builds up and sheds, but it does not have a way to exit the body. This can cause people with endometriosis to experience gastrointestinal symptoms. Endo belly often happens before or during a menstrual period and can last anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. Endo belly is a visible symptom of endometriosis

and often comes with other, less visible symp toms, such as nausea, cramps, gas pians, di arrhea, constipation, and bloating. Treating endo belly typically means treating endometriosis. Treatment op tions can vary from simple over-the counter (OTC) pain medications, hormonal medications, to inva sive surgeries.

The following self-care tips may help alleviate endo belly symptoms: • Consider an anti-in flammatory diet: Foods such as fruits and veg etables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can

help ease inflamma tion. Avoid inflam matory items, such as red meat, dairy, caffeine, and alcohol.

• Choose foods high in fiber: Eating high fiber foods such as apples, carrots, oats, almonds, and sweet potatoes can help prevent con stipation. • Try certain herbs and spices: Ginger and mint are common remedies for nau sea. Also, cinnamon and cloves may help reduce gas, cramps, and bloating. If a person with endometriosis experi ences gastrointestinal distress alongside abdominal bloating, they should contact a doctor. The doctor will be able to de termine if the bloating relates to endo metriosis or another cause and suggest appropriate treatment.

WHAT IS DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF? By Surabhi Ashok

Imagine you lose your house in a fire. All your possessions, your clothes in your closet, your bulletin board covered in pictures, your memories, are gone. However, you push away your sadness and tell yourself that you should be glad that at least your whole family is safe, that other people lose more than objects in fires this big. This is an example of disenfranchised grief, which is any hidden sorrow that is undermined by society. This type of grief is hard to heal because peo ple often fail to acknowledge the extent of it. Just know, your grief is always valid. Disenfranchised grief often occurs due to unrecognized relationships, “less significant” loss that does not necessarily deal with death, stigmatized loss, exclusion from mourning, and grief that looks different than what so ciety expects. Private or unrecognized relationships may cause disenfran chised grief because not only would it be hard to express heartache but also outside people may fail to understand why one would mourn a supposed stranger. For instance, people who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community might experience this feeling if they aren’t out and they lost a partner. The deaths of a casual partner, an ex, an online friend, or a pen pal can also cause disenfranchised grief. Even the death of someone who you did not but could have known, such as an absent parent, can create grief because you additionally mourn the lack of relationship. Society sometimes pits different experiences against each other, making people feel as if their situation does not matter because someone somewhere is going through worse. Remember the existence of someone’s pain does not erase your own. However, this feeling that there is somehow a “less signif icant” type of loss often generates disenfranchised grief. For example, loss that is not related to death can be seen as less significant even though a person can be permanently removed from your life even if they are alive. Breakups, estrangement, dementia/Alzheimer’s (when mourning memories that are slowly being destroyed), loss of possessions, loss of safety or inde pendence, loss/waste of time, and loss of health causes unvalidated distress. Even more, people expect the death of a teacher/student, a patient, a pet, a co-worker, or a friend’s child to hurt less because they don’t view the rela tionships made as intimate. The loss of all of these examples is deemed less significant in society, which makes people suffering from these situations hide their pain. Stigmatized loss definitely causes people to hide their grief because they might be criticized if they didn’t. Especially on the internet, strangers find it okay to voice their opinion on a situation, making jokes and passing their judgement on something they have no say on. These instances can cause one to feel more angry or ashamed rather than comforted. Grief that is caused by infertility, suicide, overdose, abortion, miscarriage, estrangement with a loved one who is experiencing hardships such as mental health issues, or the loss of a loved one who was imprisoned all bring up a certain stigma. For instance, a person experiencing the grief of losing a loved one who was con victed might invalidate their feelings because their loved one was not a good person, and therefore according to society, is not worthy of being mourned. Hidden grief can also occur when one is excluded from mourning. Socie tal stereotypes make it seem as if one has less of a right to mourn a loved one that was not a partner or immediate family, once again making one’s grief seem “less significant” even if that’s not true. It is okay to grieve a best friend,

an extended family member, or a classmate, and no one should be excluded from feeling sad about their death. In addition, children and people with cognitive impairment or striking mental health issues are excluded from mourning because people assume they lack the ability to properly under stand what is going on. By doing this, people invalidate their distress and act as if it isn’t there, which in turn causes the one grieving to push it away as well. Finally, disenfranchised grief is caused by societal expectations vs reality. When norms such as crying, visible sadness, social withdrawal, and loss of appetite aren’t shown, people may deny the fact that someone is grieving at all. For example, anger, a lack of emotion, increased work, and substance use are all reactions to loss that society does not commonly expect. It’s import ant to note that no two people will deal with a situation in the exact same way, and by creating a universal conclusion on how grief should look like can discredit one’s experiences. Now, all of this suppressed grief can result in insomnia, substance misuse, anxiety, depression, shame, and even physical problems. Furthermore, be cause unspoken emotions can be very taxing on a person, one might also ex perience mood swings, relationship problems, and a lack of focus. If some one close to you has just recently lost someone, do not dismiss or minimize their grief because they will start to doubt their own emotions which then leads to the development of an unhealthy process of grieving. Just offer sup port always and allow them to take the time they need for themselves. To cope with your disenfranchised grief, first acknowledge your pain and why you are feeling that way. Talk to your friends, a therapist, or support groups who understand and relate to your grief. Make your own ritual to honor your loss such as planting flowers, journaling, etc. in order to achieve well-needed closure. And remember, your grief is valid. premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. The bottom line is that, regardless of what type of motor vehicle violation you are charged with, you should seek the advice of an attorney before appearing in Municipal Court by yourself and entering into a plea bargain which may subject you to other legal ramifications of which you were not aware. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW AFTER BEING INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT? By John Bazzurro In my practice, clients will typically come in for a consultation concerning injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident more than one month after the accident has occurred. In general, it is after this time that people realize that they have sustained personal injuries, which warrant a visit to an attorney for advice. However, what a person does or does not do in the first 30 days after a motor vehicle accident may have a significant impact on their ability to bring a lawsuit in the future. First and foremost, it is important that individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents report their accident to the local police or proper authorities to ensure that there is a record of the accident and to obtain the other drivers’ information. In fact, N.J.S.A 39:4-130 specifically requires that any motor vehicle accident in which a person is injured or in which the property damage is greater than $500.00 be reported to the local police department. Often times clients will tell me that they and the other driver decided not to report the accident to the police in order to avoid having to “put it through” their insurance. In these instances, the other driver may attempt to deny that the accident even occurred. Thus it is important that the accident be reported promptly-especially where significant property damage or personal injuries are involved. Second, it is important to know that any and all medical treatment that is required as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident be paid for by the applicable motor vehicle insurance policy as opposed to a health insurance policy. New Jersey law provides that automobile policies of insurance provide Personal Injury Protection coverage (PIP) to allow for those injured in motor vehicle accidents to receive proper medical treatment. If such medical bills are paid for by health insurance as opposed to automobile insurance, issues may arise in the future concerning the potential need to repay the health insurance company for any benefits paid. Thus, when visiting an emergency room or physician for treatment related to a car accident, you should provide them with your automobile insurance policy information. Third, with regard to damages to your vehicle, you should obtain a copy of the police report as soon as possible (typically police departments will be able to provide same within a few days) for purposes of identifying the other drivers’ insurance company. Once the insurance company is identified, they should be contacted and advised that your vehicle sustained damage due to the negligence of their driver. However, when speaking to the other insurance company, no statements should be given concerning how the accident occurred or the nature and extent of any injuries suffered. Instead, you should only provide them with a copy of the police report to show them how the accident happened. If you provide the other insurance company with a statement, that statement may be used against you in any future litigation (including traffic court) concerning the accident. Finally, any and all “evidence” should be recorded and maintained in the event a lawsuit arises. For instance, photographs should immediately be taken of the damage to your vehicle as well as the other vehicle if possible. Additionally, photographs of any injuries sustained (bruises, cuts, scrapes, abrasions, casts and bandages) should also be taken. If anyone approaches you at the scene of the accident you should take down their contact information for potential future use. If you are aware of these issues and comply with the actions suggested, it will make it easier for you and your attorney to properly and efficiently pursue any claims against the other drivers. However, your failure to abide by all or some of the suggestions, your failure to do so may make any claims much more difficult to pursue. Of course, if you have any questions concerning the above, please do not hesitate to contact our office for a consultation.
