Baby Mail By Pam Teel It’s hard to believe it, for a brief period of four years, it was possible and legal to mail a baby or small child through the U.S. Postal Service. In 1913, The United States Postal Service intro duced parcel posts. Before then, all packages sent by mail had to weigh 4 pounds or under. With parcel post, people could now ship anything below 50 pounds, but almost immediately, it had some unintended consequences, as Americans took advantage of this great opportunity to gain access to all kinds of goods and services; even leading to some parents succeeding to sending their children through the mail. Indeed, the post office’s decision to begin the shipment of large packages and parcels was one that millions of Americans appreciated, particularly people who lived in rural communities. All kinds of goods showed up in the mail stream including dogs, eggs, and so on. Back then, there were no clear guidelines that stipulated what one could and couldn’t mail. While the rules stated the only parcels of 50 pounds and below could be mailed, it didn’t exclude the possibility of mailing human beings. Babies! This one particular class of item stood out from the rest. With this new leverage, peo ple began to send their babies and small children through the mail. They did so because they considered it a cheaper option, in comparison to getting train tickets. The mail carriers gave a special name to this practice of mailing babies. They called it “Baby mail.” Sending children through the mail simply involved carrying or walking them through the route, nothing else. It seems laughable now that babies were actually sent as mail, but then it was perceived as a mere logical exercise that many people embraced. Parents who did this were mostly concerned about how economically advantageous it was. Sending a child through the post was cheaper than buying a train ticket for him. According to National Postal Museum historian Nancy Pope, the first known case of a mailed baby was in 1913 when Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Beauge of Glen Este, Ohio, shipped their 10-pound infant son to his grandmother’s home about a mile away, paying 15 cents in postage and spring ing for $50 in insurance (just in case something bad happened). The story soon made newspa pers, and for the next several years, similar stories would occasionally surface as other parents followed. One child who did make the trip in a railway mail car was 5-year-old May Pierstorff who was sent from Grangeville to Lewiston, Idaho, to visit her grandmother on February 19, 1914. She was just under the weight limit at 48.5 pounds, and her parents realized that sending her by

mail would be cheaper than buying her a train ticket. They attached the postage, which was 53 cents in parcel post stamps to May’s coat, and she rode in the train’s mail compartment all the way to Lewiston. She was personally delivered to her grandmother’s home by the mail clerk. Luckily, little May wasn’t shoved into a canvas sack along with the other packages. As it turns out, she was accompanied on her trip by her mother’s cousin, who worked as a clerk for the railway mail service. It’s likely that his influence (and his willingness to chaperone his young cousin) is what convinced local officials to send the little girl along with the mail. Another child, Edna Neff, 6, was sent 720 miles from Pensacola, Florida to Christiansburg, Virginia, where her father lived. Finally, in 1915, several newspapers including the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times all ran stories stating the postmaster had officially decreed that children could no longer be sent through the mail, but from time to time these stories continued to pop up, as parents occasion ally managed to slip their children through the mail thanks to rural workers willing to let it slide. While the odd practice of mailing out kids might be seen as incompetence or negligence on the part of the mail carriers, it was more as an example of just how much rural communities relied on and trusted local postal workers. Mail carriers were trusted servants. People didn’t worry back then about their children being kidnapped or abused. Still, even back then, they took a chance on their children being hurt, or frightened, or stuck in a dark damp box car overnight along with the daily mail. Who was responsible for changing the diapers and feeding the child, especially on the longer trips, since postmasters’ task was to simply carry or walk them through their route and nothing else? Would be nice to find a journal written by the such postmasters in charge of the mail babies to describe what other duties they had to take on during that time.

Q: LEADERS IN LEAST INVASIVE PAIN & SPINE PROCEDURES How can Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment Help Shoulder and Knee Pain?

A:

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy also referred to as PRP Therapy, is a progressive non-surgical treatment to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, ten don injuries, and ligament injuries. PRP is part of a group of state-of-the-art treatments collectively referred to as Regenerative Medicine. PRP treats an injured area naturally using your body’s own growth factors to accelerate healing. It has been shown to be safe and effec tive for numerous joint and soft tissue injuries. It has been extensively researched in numerous medical journals and publications all over the world. Some of the many uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include osteoarthritis (degenera tive arthritis) of the spine, knee, shoulder, hip, hands, and feet, as well as menis cus tears, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cuff tears. The procedure is simple and is performed in the office. The PRP process begins when a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed from the arm and placed into a special container. The blood is then placed into a device called a centri fuge which spins the blood to help the separate the portion of the blood which becomes concentrated with platelets, thereby giving the procedure its name. These platelets are important because they release growth factors to recruit stem cells and to assist in healing an injured area naturally. Once the PRP is isolated, it is injected to the injured area under the guidance of an ultrasound machine to help accelerate healing and reduce pain.

This healing works on the simple principle that your body is perfectly capable of healing itself. Your blood contains all the essential components that the body produces to repair tissue damage. Each time you have an injury, the platelets in your blood along with growth factors, stem cells, cytokines, and other elements create a scaffolding on the site. The damaged tissues use this framework to regenerate and repair. The entire process takes approximately one hour, and pa tients are sent home the same day. Patients on average report more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. This may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In a recent study, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery gave patients with early osteoarthritis an injection of PRP and then monitored them for one year. After one year of the PRP injection, physicians evaluated the knee cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous studies have shown that patients with osteoarthritis can lose roughly five percent of knee cartilage per year, the Hospital for Special Surgery investigators found that a large majority of patients in their study had no further cartilage loss. At minimum PRP also prevented further knee deterioration.

Monroe Township High School-Senior Spotlight: Sukrut Oak By, Nazli Mohadeen

If you told Sukrut Oak four years ago that he’d graduate high school during a worldwide crisis, much less as his class’ salutatorian and with an admission in hand to Stanford University, he likely wouldn’t believe you. In between watching reruns of his so-called comfort showThe Office and snacking on Taco Bell, Oak is particularly interested in science fiction movies, Interstellar and the Star Wars saga being his favorites. He is also fond of pop and hip hop music, mostly listening to The Weeknd, NAV, and Juice WRLD whenever possible. As part of building his high school résumé, Oak has taken honors and Advanced Placement courses in addition to standard classes. Being an AP student, he’s also taken the tests for these coinciding cours es-15 to be exact. This year he was an AP Physics C student and with only a couple of other peers in his class, it was no doubt a difficult course to take. With this newly gained experience, he has learned a valuable lesson and wishes to advise others to do the same. “...Challenge yourself in all that you do...I tried to...take on all the responsibilities that I could, but I have also realized that it is especially important to find a community to work together and collaborate with to achieve your goals...Working together through our struggles, we helped each other succeed and turned into a tight-knit group that would support one another. On stressful nights, we would joke around and send memes, and I loved every moment that our class shared.” Besides serving an officer position in Science Honor Society and being a member in the National Honor

Society, he is also involved in the respective Math and Rho Kappa Honor Societies, too. Other leadership positions he

holds include President of Mathletes and Committee Member of the Principal’s Student Action Committee. Oak is also part of Monroe’s chapter of FBLA and was awarded as being a Top 10 Team at the National Conference for Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making. However, he is most involved in the school’s chapter of DECA (Distributive Edu cation Clubs of America). Here, Oak serves as the club’s President and CEO, some thing, he says, is one of his greatest accomplishments of his high school career. He’s helped organize it's Car Show and tables at Haunted High School and Octoberfest as well. Beyond qualifying twice for the DECA international conference, Oak was also a finalist for Entrepreneurship TeamDecision Making, placed first and second in the Central Jersey Regional and District levels, and won a certificate of excel lence for his attendance at the Career Development Conference. Oak has also been the recipient of the AP Scholar with Distinction Award as well as the National AP Scholar Award. While he’s done work at the state level for DECA and other organizations, Oak has also made an impact in his very own community. He’s led Boy Scout community service projects like road cleanups and fire hydrant painting in addition to being a youth volunteer for Deacon’s Food Pantry and the Monroe Township Public Library (as part of their Buddy tutor Program). He’s an Eagle Scout and Senior Patrol Leader for the Boy Scout’s Troop 60 of Monroe, too. On top of various service projects, Oak is very passionate about gaining internship experience. He worked at a lab for a Princeton University Data Lab internship over the summers, using data mapping software to create different types of models and charts. Another internship he had was at Villanova University for robotics. Through out this, he worked alongside college students to design and assemble an autono mous boat, again using software to do so. Oak is also the founder of iPurpose, an Eagle Scout Project where he hopes to collect old technologies and give them to families who continue to be affected by the Juve nile Justice System. With such leadership skills and passion, the sky’s the limit for Oak. Special congratu lations to him for being this year’s salutatorian and best of luck at Stanford University where he will be attending for a major in mathematics and social sciences.

Pickleball– The Fastest Growing Sport Today By, Surabhi Ashok

With the summer seasons upon us, people generally want to be more active and spend more time outside. Keeping this in mind, one sport has recently been exploding in popularity; pickleball, an activity similar to tennis and badmin ton, is enjoyed by all ages, especially seniors and baby boomers. Pickleball is a very accessible sport: all you need to play is a paddle (wood or a combination of materials like alumi num and graphite), a plastic ball (the one with holes), a modified tennis net, and a badminton-size court. Whether you play indoors or outdoors, the court is set up with left and right service courts and a 7-foot non-volley zone, or “kitchen”, on both sides of the net. The non-volley zone prohibits someone from hitting the ball right out of the air if their feet are in contact with the area.

Pickleball can be both a single and doubles game, the social aspect becoming a major part of the sport’s appeal. Once you decide which side will start, the player on the right of the court will serve (only an underhand serve or a drop serve is allowed), and the serve has to go cross-court, or diagonal from where the first player was. Pickleball also has a rule that states that the serve and the return shot have to bounce before a player can volley the ball straight out of the air. The rally is over if someone hits the ball into the net, the ball goes out of bounds, or the ball bounces twice. In this game, you can only score a point if you are on the serving team, and each player gets to serve before they have to relinquish the ball to the other side. Now, why has pickleball garnered so much attention from the senior community? One reason is that it allows them to exercise and remain active while keeping it easy on their joints and not over-exerting. The court is smaller than a tennis court is, which allows the ball to be kept in play for much longer, making the game easier and more enjoyable for beginners. Not only is pickleball easier on the body than other sports due to the lightness of the equipment and the rule to only perform underhand serves but it is also inexpensive to get into. A paddle is around $15-40 and the pickleball itself is about $2. Pickleball is also good for a person’s mental and physical health. Many love the companionship they find when they play with their partner during doubles or their opponent during singles. Other than the social aspect, pickleball helps with hand-eye coordination, balance, and weight loss. It strengthens the car diovascular system and elevates self-esteem, all things that are important to maintain as we age. Having a multigenerational appeal, pickleball is currently the fastest growing sport with 4.8 million players in the U.S. as of June 2022. Join the trend, go buy a paddle and ball, and play pickleball with your friends as soon as you can! Tea Time The History of Long Island Iced Tea! By Pam Teel

You need to know that the drink, Long Island Iced Tea, isn’t an iced tea at all. Though it looks like an innocent enough drink, it’s packed with enough potent alcohol to knock you off your feet by the last sip in your glass. A Long Island Iced Tea is traditionally made with vodka, tequila, rum, triple sec, gin, sour mix, and a splash of Coke – the soda gives it the color of iced tea, and the sweetness of the triple sec makes it sweet tasting like iced tea. Robert “Rosebud” Butt claims to have invented this knock -out drink in 1972 as a contest entry, the challenge being to make a mixed drink with triple sec in it. Robert entered the contest while working at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island; not at the original Oak Beach Inn near Jones Beach, but at the OBI East, which occupied a historic property that was later home to the famed Canoe Place Inn. There was a similar drink that was created in the 1920s in Long Island, Tennessee, yes you heard it right, an other Long Island, which included in its ingredients, whiskey, rum, tequila, vodka, gin and a little maple syrup for sweetness. This drink was called “Old Man Bishop,” after its inventor. The speculation was that during the Prohibition era, people wanted their smuggled drinks to pack a punch, and its resemblance to iced tea would make it easy to sip in public. Two decades later, Bishop’s son, Ransom, tweaked the recipe by adding lemon, lime, and cola to it. Though not exactly the same, both had a lot of liquor and some sweetness to it. In the 1960s, recipes for the Long Island Iced Tea, before it got its famous name, appeared in Betty Crocker’s New Picture Cookbook (1961) and American Home All-Purpose Cookbook (1966). This was the first time a recipe for the spiked tea appeared in print, though these versions seem to have a few additional ingredients – simply syrup and lemon juice.

Butt’s story of invention seems to be the one that put Long Island, NY, on the map, as Butt grabbed five different bottles of booze and mixed them together to invent what became the region’s most infamous cocktail. The Long Island Iced Tea may be the Hamptons’ biggest contribution to the world since fresh fish. “They put a bottle of triple sec on the bar and they asked us to make something out of it,” Butt told PBS’ Inventors Series in 2013, a year before he died. “Twenty other bartenders and myself, we went to work, and I came up with this drink. It just spread from there. All of sudden, five years later, everywhere you went had the Long Island Iced Tea.” Butt, even had New York State ‘LI Ice Tea’ vanity license plates on his car. “Possibly similar concoctions were created elsewhere, at another time,” Butt wrote. “But the Long Island Iced Tea, as we know and love it, is truly a prod uct of Long Island, created by a true Long Islander, at a genuine Long Island institution with a famous story all its own.” Butt won a trip for two to the grand Miami Fontainebleau Hotel for creating the now-famous Long Island Iced Tea at the OBI East. But the cocktail that OBI popularized grew to have as controversial a reputation as the club itself. For as many lighthearted articles about the Long Island Iced Tea are continually published to this day, it also routinely appears on lists declaring it among the most dangerous cocktails due to its potency and deceptively innocent taste that makes it go down very smoothly. It’s not till you’re almost through with your drink when you start to feel the kick. In Butt’s PBS appearance, he recalled meeting a woman who had learned that he invented the drink and then blamed him for wrecking her car. She was Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, of The Jersey Shore fame, who was arrested in 2010 for disorderly conduct. It’s not uncommon for DWI cases that make news involving the drink to note that the suspect didn’t remember what happened after they drank the Long Island Iced Tea concoction. The credit that the Long Island Iced Tea gets for people making bad decisions is so well known that it’s repeatedly spilled into pop culture, having become a joke on multiple TV shows. Love it or hate it, the Long Island Iced Tea drink doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, so sit back, drink it with caution, and enjoy the ride! For those twenty-one and over- The original Long Island Iced Tea from Long Island, NY • ½ oz. triple sec • ½ oz gin • ½ oz light rum • ½ oz. tequila • ½ oz vodka • 1 oz sour mix • Cola- 4 to 6 ice cubes, lemon wedge

REAL ESTATE Tax benefits When Purchasing A New Home By, Lauren Kowlacki For many families in the United States, buying a home is one of the biggest milestones they strive to achieve. It also comes with the added benefit of dras tically increasing your net worth. Many people are on the fence when determining whether or not buying a home is the right decision. But, for those unaware, there are numerous tax benefits associated with purchasing a house. Not sure where to start? Don't worry, we’ve got you covered. Let's take a look at everything you need to know. 1. You Can Deduct Interest on Your Mortgage Most buyers will be pleased to know that they can deduct the interest that they pay on their mortgage from their taxes. While this only applies to home financing that's less than $750,000, chances are that the average first-time buyer will be able to take full advantage of it. You're also able to deduct any interest that you paid as part of the closing costs associated with your purchase. Typically, you can find this number on the settlement sheet. Before the year's tax season begins, your lender will send you an IRS Form 1098. This document will detail all of the money that you paid in interest on your loan throughout the past year. 2. Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) Deductions Similar to how you're able to deduct interest that you pay on a mortgage, you can also deduct the amount you pay for private mortgage insurance. For those who are unfamiliar with the term, buyers who put down less than 20% of the value of their home will be required in most cases to purchase private mortgage insurance. This coverage is designed to protect your mortgage lender in the event that you quit making payments toward your loan. Since it's not always possible to put down 20%, deducting the cost can lessen the financial burden slightly. The criteria for this deduction are as follows: • You purchased your home after 2007 • Your AGI (adjusted gross income) is less than $50,000 ($100,000 if married) If you satisfy these requirements, this is an option always worth looking into to save a bit of extra money. 3. First-time Buyer Benefits It's not uncommon for homebuyers to pull a bit of money from their IRA in order to get enough capital for their purchase. Under most circumstances, the IRS imposes a 10% penalty for withdrawing money from this account before you're 59-and-a-half years old. If you have never owned a principal residence in the past two years, however, you can withdraw up to $10,000 without any penalty at all. This amount is $20,000 if you are married. Additionally, the residence doesn't have to be for yourself— it's possible to purchase a home for a family member using this method. It's important to note, though, that any funds you take out of your IRA must be used within four months of the withdrawal. 4. Property Taxes Homeowners are able to deduct up to $10,000 per year when it comes to property taxes. If you pay your property taxes through your lender (such as through an escrow account), the aforementioned IRS Form 1098 will have that amount for the past year. For those who pay taxes Directly to their municipality, it's imperative to keep financial records of the amounts that you paid throughout the year. In combination with the other tax benefits of buying a home, deducting your property taxes can prove to save you thousands of dollars. 5. Home Office Deductions If you work from home, you can deduct the square footage that you use for your office. Similarly, you can also factor in the resources that you use to facilitate your business or occupation (such as office supplies, equipment, etc.). It's important to note that because this deduction has a high probability of being abused, it's capped at 300 sqft for office space. Additionally, the other guidelines associated with home office deductions are fairly rigid. So, it's highly recommended that you enlist the help of a tax professional when looking to get the most out of this amount. 6. Tax Benefits From Selling In the event that you sell your home, you'll be subjected to capital gains tax. This technically applies to the sale of any asset where the current value of the initial purchase price is less than the price that it sold for. When it comes to a house, though, you're excluded from paying capital gains tax on the first $250,000 of profit. Married couples are exempt from paying tax on the first $500,000 of profit. As you can see, this is one of the most significant benefits to keep in mind. In some cases, it's possible to experience hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit without having to pay any capital gains tax on this amount. But, in order to exercise this privilege, you'll need to have lived in your primary residence for at least two years out of the past five years. If you don't satisfy this requirement, you won't be able to take advantage of the deduction. Something important to note is that you can add the cost of any home improvements that you've made to the value of the home before you sell it. This will result in a lower overall profit from the sale of your home, which could be enough to keep you under the $250,000 or $500,000 limit. Buying a home can seem difficult, but it doesn't have to be. With the above information about the tax benefits of buying a home in mind, you'll be well on your way toward making the decision that's best for you and your future.

Regarding Real Estate: Insight and Tips When Looking for A New Home By, Mia Inqui 1. Avoid commenting about the home as your tour it. Homeown ers could be eavesdropping via smart home technology or nan ny cams. If you seem too enthusiastic, you may lose some of your negotiating power. 2. Don’t open any new lines of credit while you’re pre-approved for a mortgage and don’t change jobs while in the mortgage process. Both could hurt securing your mortgage and loan. 3. Finding the perfect home that matches a 100 percent of your wish and check list is tough. Experts say if a home meets 85 percent of the requirements you’re looking for, make an offer! 4. Hiring an agent should be your first priority when looking to purchase a new home! An agent’s job is to advocate for you and save you money during the complicated process of buying a home. In most cases, the seller covers the buyer agent’s com mission. So, there’s really no good reason not to hire an agent. 5. It’s a myth that you need to put down 20% when you purchase a new home with a mortgage. On average, first time home buyers average just 7% down with a mortgage. Some loans, like VA or USDA loans, even allow you to put 0% down. However, under stand that the more you put down, the smaller your monthly mortgage payment will be. And if you put down 20% or more, you can skip additional mortgage insurance costs.

Should I Buy a Home Right Now? By, Heather Smith

ROOFING • SIDING • GUTTERS FASCIA • SOFFIT • DOWNSPROUTS “We take pride in the quality of our work.” COMPETITIVE PRICING 5 YEAR LABOR WARRANTY

If you’ve been thinking about buying a home, you may have one question on the top of your mind: should I buy right now, or should I wait? While no one can answer that question for you, here’s some data that could help you make your decision in re gard to the future of home appreciation. Each quarter, Pulsenomics surverys a national panel of over 100 economists, real estate experts, and investment and market strat egists to compile projections for the future of home price appre ciation. The output is the Home Price Expectation Survey. In the latest release, it forecasts the rate of appreciation will moderate over the next few years as the market shifts away from the unsus tainable pace it saw during the pandemic. After this year, experts project home price appreciation will continue, but at levels that are more typical for the market. This data on ongoing home appreciation should give you peace of mind in homeownership because it is worthwhile because you’re buying an asset that’s projected to grow in value in the years ahead. If you’re ready to become a homeowner in Florida, know that buying today can impact your greater net worth because your equity is growing and will set you up for long-term success as your asset’s value (and your own net worth) is projected to grow with the ongoing home price appreciation. I have over 25 years of experience in the South Florida Real Es tate Market and I am happy to help answer any questions you may have. Let’s connect to begin your homebuying process today.
