Q: LEADERS IN LEAST INVASIVE PAIN & SPINE PROCEDURES How can Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment Help Shoulder and Knee Pain?

A:

Platelet Rich Plasma erapy also referred to as PRP erapy, is a progressive non-surgical treatment to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, ten- don injuries, and ligament injuries. PRP is part of a group of state-of-the-art treatments collectively referred to as Regenerative Medicine. PRP treats an injured area naturally using your body’s own growth factors to accelerate healing. It has been shown to be safe and e ec- tive for numerous joint and so tissue injuries. It has been extensively researched in numerous medical journals and publications all over the world. Some of the many uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include osteoarthritis (degenera- tive arthritis) of the spine, knee, shoulder, hip, hands, and feet, as well as menis- cus tears, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cu tears. e procedure is simple and is performed in the o ce. e PRP process begins when a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed from the arm and placed into a special container. e blood is then placed into a device called a centri- fuge which spins the blood to help the separate the portion of the blood which becomes concentrated with platelets, thereby giving the procedure its name. ese platelets are important because they release growth factors to recruit stem cells and to assist in healing an injured area naturally. Once the PRP is isolated, it is injected to the injured area under the guidance of an ultrasound machine to help accelerate healing and reduce pain.

is healing works on the simple principle that your body is perfectly capable of healing itself. Your blood contains all the essential components that the body produces to repair tissue damage. Each time you have an injury, the platelets in your blood along with growth factors, stem cells, cytokines, and other elements create a sca olding on the site. e damaged tissues use this framework to regenerate and repair. e entire process takes approximately one hour, and pa- tients are sent home the same day. Patients on average report more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. is may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In a recent study, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery gave patients with early osteoarthritis an injection of PRP and then monitored them for one year. A er one year of the PRP injection, physicians evaluated the knee cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous studies have shown that patients with osteoarthritis can lose roughly ve percent of knee cartilage per year, the Hospital for Special Surgery investigators found that a large majority of patients in their study had no further cartilage loss. At minimum PRP also prevented further knee deterioration.

Custom orthotics are specific, prescription inserts customized to your feet and your conditions. They usually have a firm bottom shell, to achieve body support, and a softer topcover for cushion and shock absorption. Orthotics should be comfortable for wear! They are also hidden in shoes, so nobody even knows you are wearing them. Beware of imitations that are not custom made, as they are just off-the-shelf inserts. Also, beware of how they are made. Acceptable techniques are plaster casting, foam box impression casting, and the latest digital casting or 3D casting. Some casting is static (you stand or sit while an impression of your feet is obtained), but the most accurate is dynamic casting (you walk while pressure readings and impressions are obtained so that the doctor has more information on what your feet are doing while you walk)...most of us can't afford to go through life standing still, right? So I believe in dynamic digital casting! A properly and professionally made orthotic is an important solution

Mistletoe & Medicine By, Valerie Mancuso

Mistletoe is a semiparasitic plant that grows on trees, such as apple, oak, maple, elm, pine, and birch. It has been used for hundreds of years to treat medical condi- tions such as epilepsy, hypertension, headaches, meno- pausal symptoms, infertility, arthritis, and rheumatism. Mistletoe is one of the most widely studied comple- mentary and alternative medicine therapies for cancer. In Europe, mistletoe extracts are among the most pre- scribed therapies for cancer patients. Mistletoe extracts are usually given by an injec- tion under the skin (subcutaneous). Less common ways to give mistletoe include by mouth, into a vein (intra- venous or IV), into the pleural cavity, or into a tumor. Most clinical trials using mistletoe extracts to treat cancer have been done in Europe. Many studies use mistletoe as adjuvant therapy in patients with cancer. Although these trials have reported mistletoe extracts to be effective, weaknesses have been reported. Few serious side effects have been reported from the use of mistletoe extracts. Side effects include soreness and inflammation at injection sites, headache, fever, and chills. A few cases of severe allergic reactions, including ana- phylactic shock, have been reported. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of mistletoe as a treatment for can- cer or any other medical condition.

QUESTION: What is Optomap retinal imaging?

ANSWER:

The optomap ultra-widefield retinal image is a unique technology that captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image while traditional imaging methods typically only show 15% of your retina at one time. Your retina (located in the back of your eye) is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly. This means that in addition to eye conditions, signs of other diseases (for example, stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes) can also be seen in the retina. Early detection of life-threatening diseases like cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. It also facilitates early protection from vision impairment or blindness. Early signs of these conditions can show on your retina long before you notice any changes to your vision or feel pain. While eye exams include a look at the front of the eye to evaluate health and prescription changes, a thorough screening of the

free. It is suitable for every age, even children. The capture takes less than a second. Images are available immediately and you can see your own retina and exactly what your eye care practitioner sees in a 3D animation. Most importantly, early detection means successful treatments can be administered and reduces the risk to your sight and health.

Should I get a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine if I have Cancer?

People with certain cancers or who are receiving treatment that suppresses the immune system may have a weaker re- sponse to COVID-19 vaccines than people whose immune systems are not compromised. CDC recommends that people whose immune systems are moderately to severely compromised and who received two doses of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) receive a third dose of the same vaccine. According to CDC, such people include those who: • Are being treated for blood cancer (leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma) • Have received a stem cell transplant within the past 2 years • Are taking medicine that may suppress your immune response

At this time, there is not enough data to recommend an ad- ditional dose for people who received Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. Visit CDC’s website for more information about COVID-19 vaccines for immunocompromised people, and ask your doctor if you should get an additional dose. What are other ways that I can protect myself? Aside from vaccination, the most effective way to prevent COVID-19 is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes it. People at high risk for developing serious illness from COVID-19 can help protect themselves by limiting their interac- tions with other people as much as possible and by taking precautions to prevent getting COVID-19 when they do interact with others. To protect yourself and prevent the spread of COVID-19: • Get a COVID-19 vaccination. • Wear a well-fitting mask that covers your nose and mouth. • Stay 6 feet away from people who don’t live with you. • Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces. • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available. • Cover coughs and sneezes. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. • Be alert for symptoms of COVID-19. What should I do if I have symptoms of an infection? If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 or have symptoms of an infection, isolate yourself from others and call your health care provider. You may need to get tested for coronavirus.

Addressing the Challenges of Cancer Misinformation on Social Media

Misinformation about cancer is pervasive on the Internet and social media. Researchers are trying to understand its impact on patients and cancer care. You or someone you love has just been diagnosed with cancer. You’ve met with the doctor and your head is spinning. You’re over- whelmed and scared. Like many people these days, you turn to the Internet and social media for information. Someone you know points you to a scien- tific-sounding article or a video by a “medical expert” that offers new hope, perhaps by describing treatments that are “all natural” and don’t have unpleasant or serious side effects.

H E A L T H Y M I N D & S O U L

And although the information may sound too good to be true, the site includes testimonials from patients or their family mem- bers who describe miraculous results. Scenarios like this are all too common, say oncologists, health communication experts, and the information specialists who field questions for NCI’s free Cancer Information Service (CIS). “People have been sharing inaccurate health information since the beginning of time,” said Wen-Ying Sylvia Chou, Ph.D., M.P.H., of NCI’s Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB). But the Internet and social media have made it far easier to share and spread health misinformation, Dr. Chou said. Indeed, a recent study found that of the most popular articles posted on social media in 2018 and 2019 on the four most common cancers, one in every three contained false, inaccurate, or misleading information. And most of that misinfor- mation about cancer was potentially harmful. Further, Dr. Johnson’s team found, people were more likely to engage with misinformation than with factual information. “A substantial proportion of the content on YouTube was potentially biased and/or misinformative,” and those videos got more views and thumbs-ups than videos containing accurate information, said Stacy Loeb, M.D., M.Sc., of the NYU School of Medicine, who led that study. For example, one popular video recommended injecting herbs into the prostate to treat cancer, which is unproven and potentially dangerous. More recently, other studies led by Dr. Loeb found similarly misleading information about prostate cancer on TikTok and Instagram. “It’s clear that cancer misinformation is a pervasive problem across social networks,” Dr. Loeb continued. More research is needed on the impact of online misinformation on decisions about medical care and on people’s health, she added. And effective strategies are needed to address the problem, she stressed. Solutions to this problem aren’t simple. But, according to several oncologists and health communication experts, health care providers can help by keeping the lines of communication open, listening to patients in a nonjudgmental way, work- ing with them as partners to make decisions about cancer screening and treatment, and providing them with suggested resources for more information. It’s also important to look at how people who are not experts evaluate specific claims on social media, Dr. Vanderpool said. Video, tone of voice, and even things such as color schemes can have a strong impact on how people process infor- mation, she noted. Doctors who diagnose and treat cancer have been dealing with misinformation for a long time. And some misinforma- tion can lead patients to express doubts, hesitancy, or fear of taking proven treatments, said Lidia Schapira, M.D., of Stan- ford University, an oncologist who specializes in treating breast cancer. In these situations, listening to people’s concerns with empathy and respect is critical, she emphasized. Dr. Schapira starts “by asking questions, listening, and being nonjudgmental.” From there, she tries to identify oppor- tunities for negotiation. “For example, I will ask the patient to imagine the consequences of taking or not taking such a treatment, and then try to find some alignment of purpose—such as achieving a cure or good quality of life—and com- mon ground.” Continued on page 25...

New CDC Campaign Highlights Steps to Prevent Injury in Adults Ages 65 and Over Still Going Strong reminds older adults that getting older doesn’t have to mean giving up the activities you enjoy The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is launching Still Going Strong, a national campaign that brings attention to ways older adults (age 65 and older) can age without injury. The campaign is raising awareness about the leading causes of unintentional injuries and deaths in older adults. Still Going Strong will encourage older adults to continue participating in their favorite hobbies and activities, while informing them and their caregivers of steps they can take to prevent injuries that disproportionately impact this population—falls, motor vehicle crashes, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). “Experiencing injuries doesn’t have to be a normal part of aging; many injuries that are common in older adults can be prevented,” said Debra Houry, MD, MPH, director of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. “We know that injuries and deaths from falls and motor vehicle crashes are increasing in older adults. We hope Still Going Strong will help inform our audience about simple steps they can do to prevent injuries and their lasting effects. Everyone has a role—older adults, caregivers, loved ones, and healthcare providers. By taking proactive steps, you can prevent po- tentially life-changing injuries from happening and maintain your independence and mobility longer.” The prevalence of older adult injuries Older adults had over 2.4 million emergency department (ED) visits and 700,000 hospitalizations related to injuries from falls, motor vehicle crashes, opioid overdoses, and self-harm in 2018, according to a new CDC report in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). Unintentional falls accounted for over 90% of these ED visits and hospitalizations. Falls: Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in older adults. An older adult falls every second of the day, accounting for over 36 million falls each year. Of those falls, 1 out of every 5 causes a serious injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. After an older adult falls, their chances of falling again and getting injured increases. Motor Vehicle Crashes: Older adults account for over 46 million licensed drivers in the United States—or 1 in 5 drivers. Driving helps older adults stay independent, but the risk of being injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash in- creases as we age. Every day, 700 older adults are injured in a motor vehicle crash and 22 die because of their injuries. TBI: Falls and motor vehicle crashes are common causes of TBI in older adults. TBI is a major cause of death and dis- ability, and those who survive a TBI can face effects that last a few days or the rest of their lives. Aging without injury • Over 10,000 people in the United States turn 65 every day. Getting older doesn’t have to mean giving up your fa- vorite hobbies and activities. Older adults are more active and mobile than ever, but an injury from a fall or motor vehicle crash can decrease their independence. It’s important for older adults and their caregivers to understand common injuries that can happen as we age and what they can do to prevent these injuries. • Older adults and their caregivers can take simple steps to prevent injuries from falls or car crashes. One of the most important things older adults can do is to talk to their healthcare providers—including general practitioners, spe- cialists, physical therapists, and pharmacists. • Older adults can take simple steps to maintain their independence and mobility, such as talking to their health care providers about preventing falls and car crashes, removing throw rugs to make their home safer, and always wearing a seat belt while driving or riding in a vehicle. • Friends, family, and caregivers can help loved ones live longer and healthier lives by talking with them about fall and motor vehicle crash prevention and by encouraging them to stay active and make safe choices, such as finding alternative transportation for going places at night. • Healthcare providers can ask their older patients if they have concerns about falling or driving safely. They also can review older patients’ over-the-counter and prescription medications to identify if any cause drowsiness or dizzi- ness.

Slip and fall accidents By John Bazzurro

FA M I LY M AT T E R S

As the weather turns bad, many store owners and landowners begin to ask what their responsibility is with respect to clearing ice and snow from their walkways, parking lots and sidewalks. Similarly, people begin asking whether they have a viable personal injury case where they have sustained an injury after slipping and falling on an ice and snow condition. Typically, landowners (whether they be a homeowner, shopping center owner, parking lot owner, mall owner or storeowner) have a duty to make their land or premises safe for the general public and individuals that they invite on their land. Under general landowner liability principles, a landownermust take reasonable steps to protect people coming onto their property from being injured as a result of a slippery condition caused by ice or snow. This generally includes snow removal and salting or sanding to prevent slippery conditions from existing. However, the law only requires landowners to do what is reasonable under the circumstances to clear the ice and snow. With respect to the existence of ice and snow on property that causes someone to slip and fall, the reasonableness or unreasonableness of the landowner’s action or inaction will be determined, in part, by the length of time that the ice and snow existed prior to person’s fall, the location of the ice and snow, whether any actions had been previously taken by the landowner to remove the ice and snow and whether other conditions of the land contributed to the existence of the ice or snow. In addition to the landowners, other entities may also be responsible for the continued existence of ice or snow. These entities include tenants on the premises under certain circumstances, snow removal contractors and even those entities which may have designed or built the premises. Only attorneys trained in such matters will be able to properly determine the appropriate parties to investigate in that these cases are generally depend on the facts of each individual situation. In these types of cases, it is important to preserve the evidence with respect to the existence of the ice and snow if possible. This may be done in many ways including, but not limited to, taking photographs, advising the manager of the store or facility of the fall and the condition at the time it occurs, and obtaining the names of witnesses if possible. Because the existence of ice and snow can be easily and quickly corrected (by shoveling or salting and sanding), it is imperative that the evidence be preserved as soon as possible. If you or a family member have been injured as a result of a slip or fall on ice or snow on someone else’s property, it is imperative to seek advice of a competent personal injury lawyer to protect your rights as soon as possible. Please feel free to contact our office for a free consultation to discuss the facts of your case.

What an Ironman Can Teach Us About Financial Planning By, Bryan Kuderna It was August 15, 2015 on an already sweltering morning in Mont Tremblant, Canada. I dug my toes into the sand amidst a crowd of 2,700 elite athletes from around the world. As I zipped up my wetsuit, I thought about all my training the past year, my strategy to conquer the day, a slew of what if ’s I’d encounter over the next 16 hours, and excitement mixed with worry. Then BANG, fireworks erupted across the beach. I learned a lot from my journey to become an Ironman, but it wasn’t until I returned to my office in New Jersey that I thought about my experiences and how they related to my work. As a CFP® and author on personal finance, “Millennial Millionaire- A Guide to Become a Millionaire by 30”, I naturally connected my competition to my clients’ goals and con- cerns. This outrageous idea of not even having a bicycle, let alone competing in triathlons, to taking on the ultimate fitness test stemmed from another one of my crazy New Year’s Resolutions. I woke up on January 1, 2015 and the first thing I did was scour the internet for potential Ironman’s. August gave me 8 months, what I thought was enough time, and Quebec was not too far away. I immediately registered for the race, paid my $800 entrance fee, and marked the date on my calendar. As simple as this sounds, this was the most important step I took in the whole process. I advise clients all day long who want to reach their financial goals, but a goal without a date and commitment is just a wish. Circling 08/15/15 on my cal- endar instantly set the tone and allowed me to design a training regimen and appropriate diet. I’m not saying a 24-year-old client should pick 08/15/58 as their exact retirement date, but benchmarks penned to paper and voiced aloud are critical. Back to the training and diet… I had no idea where to begin. I still lifted weights as I did for football in college and I ate anything I wanted. So, I went to Barnes and Noble and purchased an Ironman endorsed training manual. I read cover to cover and created my own daily workout routine from 03/01/18 – 08/15/18, recognizing that I’d burn out if I devoted to any longer of a program. There are two lessons to be gained here, first I sought expert help and became a student of the game. A financial objective is no different in that a client must educate him or herself, furthermore a trainer certainly would have accelerated my development as will a Certified Financial Planner™ to a client. Secondly, there was a detailed game plan of how I’d be prepared for race day, this is no different than how a family must plan for college, retirement, or saving for their first house. A roadmap towards a defined goal with consistent effort despite ups and downs along the way makes a far-off goal attainable. The nerves I felt before diving into the crystal-clear water of Lake Tremblant are not all that different than those before buying an investment property, sending a child to college, or handing in your retirement papers. The fear of the unknown is inevitable and faith in prior preparation is the only comforter. Within the first 200 yards of my 2.4-mile swim, I was booted square between my eyes from the heel of another competitor. I stopped swimming and struggled to gather my senses as everyone pushed past me. I was just a fewminutes in to a 16-hour contest and doubt raced through my mind. Plenty of retirees or entrepreneurs can sympathize with this feeling after suffer- ing an early defeat or market setback. Taking a break (for you a vacation, for me 30 seconds of floating amongst adrenaline filled contestants) and diagnosing the situation from an optimistic viewpoint can help stay the course. Next was the 112-mile bike ride through the mountains of Quebec, as the sun raged overhead with 90+ degree heat. This was the longest part of the contest and most monotonous, yet most dangerous. I saw several cyclists leave in ambulances due to brutal downhill crashes, the result of not paying attention or taking unnecessary risks. Again, there is a perfect parlay to wealth management, a sound financial plan often borders on boring, tempting investors to enter unchartered territory at the risk of the whole strategy. Even though a financial plan may seem to be on autopilot, active oversight is crucial in order to miss an unforeseen trap (tax change, market correction, illness/injury, lawsuit, etc.) Then there was the 26.2-mile run, I raced through the dark of night fighting off a roller coaster of emotions. I knew if I could suck it up and stay positive that I would complete my mission. The screaming support of thousands of fans along the racecourse was also invaluable. A client near the end of paying off college, selling their business, or in the last stage of re- tirement distributions knows what I mean. At this stage, one needs to play it safe (fixed income or annuities in retirement), visualize the finish line, and realize it’s okay to ask for help, be it fans, advisors, or family. Lastly, sportsmen can’t forget about recovery or their body might not appreciate their accomplishments. Clients must not forget those estate planning documents and business succession plans, or your legacy could be squandered as well. As we now know, athletes and investors alike can enjoy the thrill of a well-deserved victory by following the same tenets.

100’S OF FABRICS & VINYLS

Many name brand cleaning products we use in our homes contain harmful chem- icals that can affect your family’s health. Using non-toxic cleaning products, espe- cially ones made from DIY recipes, is very beneficial for your home. For one, non-toxic cleaning products do not pollute the air in your home, so you can feel better about the air that you and your children are breathing. They are also better for the environment; if you use these products, you are contributing to the reduction of air and water pollution. Not to mention, making your own non-toxic cleaning products is significantly cheaper than purchasing name brands. You actually probably have the ingredients somewhere in your house already! To make your own all-purpose cleaner, all you need is... • 1/4 cup of white vinegar • 2 tbsp of baking soda • 1 liter of hot water Combine these ingredients, and let the mixture cool for about 5 minutes. Then, pour it into a spray bottle and voila! You have your very own non-toxic all-purpose

cleaner! If you want it to have an aroma, all you have to do is add a few drops of essential oil to the mixture before cooling it. The best part about non-toxic cleaning products is that they are simple. You know and trust all the ingredients and you do not have to worry about any dangerous toxins. So what are you waiting for? Start cleaning your home the right way!

SAFE GARAGE, SAFE HOME Garage security is a crucial, yet often-overlooked aspect to the overall safety of your belongings and family. Some reports have shown that experienced burglars can open a locked, yet deficient garage door in only six seconds. And once they’re in your garage, they can get away with valuable tools and toys, not to mention having easier access to the inside your home. With the summer season full of trips to family members’ homes and the shopping mall, it’s time to check all of the doors, windows and other features of your garage to measure its security level when you’re away from home. SERVICE AND ENTRY DOORS

The side door on your garage is the most common point of entry for burglars. Why? Because many homeowners over- look the importance of have a dead-bolted door to the garage, which is just as important a feature on other exterior doors. Install a dead bolt and heavy-duty strike plate to make forced entry a difficult task. LIGHTING – INSIDE AND OUT Bright lighting can deter a burglar – especially motion-detector lighting that not only can spook a thief, but will also be more cost-efficient for you than lighting that stays on all night. As for the interior of your garage, think on the opposite end of bright lighting when you are away or sleeping. Cover all of your windows to keep visibility from the outside to a minimum. A crook may be more likely to pass on trying to enter if he can't see inside. KEEP THE CLICKER CLOSE If you leave your garage-door remote affixed to your sun visor, you are in danger of simply giving away access into your home. A thief who breaks in to your car – no matter where you are – can also swipe the remote for easy access into your garage. Why not opt for a keychain remote that can be in your pocket or purse at all times? These small, handy clickers are perfect for ensuring garage security every time you leave the car.

Beware, These Household Products Could Hurt Your Pet By, Lauren Kowlacki

It is important to be aware of some common household products that can possibly cause harm to your beloved cat or dog. Here is a list of the most prevalent offenders to use with caution, or even avoid, around your furry friends.

1. Human medicines: Virtually any medicine you take can be toxic to a cat or dog, but some of the worst offenders are pain relievers like Tylenol and Advil. Others to watch out for include antacids, antidepressants, diet pills, vitamins and supplements. All drugs should be locked safely in cabinets. 2. Detergents and household cleaners: Fabric softener sheets, bleach, drain cleaners, ammonia and toilet bowl cleaners all pose a threat, from mild to extremely severe. Keep these high up and behind closed doors at all times. 3. Fertilizers and weed killers: Plant fertilizers for your garden and houseplants contain a multitude of chemicals, several of which can injure your pet (such as herbicides, iron, zinc, nitrogen, phosphorus and others). 4. Insecticides: Even flea and tick products intended for pets can cause harm if not used according to the label. Never use products designed for humans, or for use in the yard, on pets. 5. Indoor and outdoor plants: Both dogs and cats are prone to nibbling plants. In the yard, watch out for daffodils, lily of the valley, azaleas, lilies (Easter, tiger, day lilies) and Jimson weed. All of these can cause potentially fatal reactions. House plants to avoid include aloe, African Violets, bamboo palms, Begonias, sage and basil. The ASPCA carries a full list. Please visit their website for a full list. 6. Human Foods: Chocolate is extremely toxic to pets and can cause serious harm or even death. Other foods that can be harmful are; are grapes and raisins, onions, products containing alcohol and caffeine, chicken bones and moldy meats they may dig out of the garbage. 7. Holiday decorations and wrap: String, yarn and tinsel can be fatal to a cat or dog if ingested. Holiday lights are electrical hazards when chewed.
