NJ Dairy Week measure signed by Governor

The last full week of June is designated New Jersey Dairy Week under a resolution signed on Monday May 13, 2019 by the governor. Assemblyman Ron Dancer sponsors the measure (AJR113) promoting the role of dairy products in a healthy lifestyle. “Children and adults alike can benefit from healthy, nutri- tious dairy products,” said Dancer (R-Ocean). “Dairy is a convenient source of vitamins D and A, calcium, potassium and other valuable nutrients.” Dancer, a long-time member of the Assembly Agriculture Committee, noted Dairy Week will also bolster the state’s important dairy industry. “There are less than 100 dairy farms remaining in the state,” he said. “We can help them survive by promoting the indus- try and spreading the word about new products and healthy options.” Consuming milk, cheese and yogurt contributes to bone health in young people and helps lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The American Flag and Its Flying Rules

The Flag of the United States of America is a symbol of freedom and liberty to which Americans pledge their allegiance. Standing at attention and facing the flag with their right hand over the heart, they recite: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." The flag’s 13 alternating red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies. Its 50 white stars on a blue field represent the 50 states. The colors on the flag represent: • Red : valor and bravery • White : purity and innocence • Blue : vigilance, perseverance, & justice Guidelines for Display of the Flag Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, contains rules for handling and displaying the U.S. flag. While the federal code contains no penalties for misusing the flag, states have their own flag codes and may impose penalties. The language of the federal code makes clear that the flag is a living symbol. In response to a Supreme Court decision which held that a state law prohibiting flag

burning was unconstitutional, Congress enacted the Flag Protection Act in 1989. It provides that anyone who knowingly desecrates the flag may be fined and/or imprisoned for up to one year. However, this law was challenged by the Supreme Court in a 1990 decision that the Flag Protection Act violates the First Amendment free speech protections. Important Things to Remember Traditional guidelines call for displaying the flag in public only from sunrise to sunset. However, the flag may be displayed at all times if it’s illuminated during darkness. The flag should not be subject to weather damage, so it should not be displayed during rain, snow and wind storms unless it is an all-weather flag. It should be displayed often, but especially on national and state holidays and special occasions. The flag should be displayed on or near the main building of public institutions, schools during school days, and polling places on election days. It should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. The flag should never be draped or drawn back in folds. Draped red, white and blue bunting should be used for decoration, with the blue at the top and red at the bottom. The flag may be flown at half-staff to honor a newly deceased federal or state government official by order of the president or the governor, respectively. On Memorial Day, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon. NEVER: • Dip it for any person or thing, even though state flags, regimental colors and other flags may be dipped as a mark of honor • Display it with the union down, except as a signal of distress • Let the flag touch anything beneath it: ground, floor, water, merchandise • Carry it horizontally, but always aloft • Fasten or display it in a way that will permit it to be damaged or soiled • Place anything on the flag, including letters, insignia, or designs of any kind. use it for holding anything • Use it as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery. It should not be used on a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be attached to the uniform of patriotic organizations, military personnel, police officers and firefighters. • Use the flag for advertising or promotion purposes or print it on paper napkins, boxes or anything else intended for temporary use and discard. During the hoisting or lowering of the flag or when it passes in parade or review, Americans should stand at attention facing the flag and place their right hand over the heart. Uniformed military members render the military salute. Men not in uniform should remove any headdress and hold it with their right hand at their left shoulder, the hand resting over the heart. Those who are not U.S. citizens should stand at attention. When the flag is worn out or otherwise no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

Assembly approves bill to rejuvenate abandoned stores, malls A plan to breathe new life into mostly vacant shopping malls and office parks was endorsed today by the Assembly. Assemblyman Ron Dancer sponsors the bill (A1700) allowing towns to designate decaying commercial sites for redevelopment, qualifying the projects for tax incentives. “The landscape of our state is litteredwithabandoned, crum- bling, and once-thriving retail centers and office complexes,” said Dancer (R-Ocean). “These buildings place a significant burden on the surrounding communities, driving property taxes up and values down. We need to help towns stimulate redevelopment and repurpose stranded assets in this era of online shopping.” Shopping centers or office parks that have been at least 50 percent va- cant for more than two years will qualify for designation as redevelop- ment zones.

NEW YORK GIANTS ANNOUNCE 3RD DAY DRAFT SELECTIONS AT SAMUEL & JOSEPHINE PLUMERI WISHING PLACE, OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR SAQUON BARKLEY SURPRISES TEEN WITH WISH

The New York Giants announced their 3rd day draft selections from the Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place, home of Make-A-Wish New Jersey, on Saturday April 27th. Big Blue joined wish kids and their fam- ily members for an exciting day filled with games, music, food and fun. Throughout the day, the Giants 4th through 6th round draft selections were broadcast from the balcony of the Make-A-Wish castle located in Monroe Township, New Jersey. The Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place, a magical and whimsical wish granting facility, is the only one of its kind. It provides an environment that is free of limitations, confinement, and stress. It stimulates the imagination and reveals to children with critical illnesses the imaginative possibilities of a wish. Among the many highlights of the day was a surprise meeting between New York Giants Running Back Saquon Barkley and 14-year-old Jared, whose wish was to meet the Offensive Rookie of the Year. In front of his family and nearly two hundred wish kids and family members, Jared and Saquon were introduced for the first time. Saquon and the New York Giants also shared with Jared that this fall, he will spend an exciting weekend with the team at a practice and a home game – a VIP treatment the Giants have continued to provide to wish children like Jared for years. The celebration also included special visits and draft picks from New York Giants’ teammates Tight End Evan Engram, Offensive Tackle Nate Solder, Tackle Chad Wheeler, and Offensive Guard Will Hernandez. The Giants have been deeply involved with Make-A-Wish for decades, creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses through- out New Jersey and across the country. In 2013, they were recognized for

their commitment to the Make-A-Wish mission and honored with the Chris Greicius Celebrity Award. This national recognition is named after the 7-year-old boy whose experience in 1980 to be a police officer inspired a group of caring volunteers to fulfill his dream and later create the Make-A- Wish Foundation. It serves to recognize celebrities, athletes, sports teams and entertainment entities who demonstrate excellence and a commitment to the mission of Make-A-Wish – to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. “Our special relationship with the New York Football Giants has always been one we hold in the highest regard,” shared Tom Weatherall, President & CEO of Make-A-Wish New Jersey. “Simply put, they have long set the bar for excellence when called upon to grant wishes. The Giants have always been there for us and for our mission, and we are honored to call them our friends. Our wish families were thrilled to be part of today’s festivities, and to welcome Big Blue back to the castle!” Since 1983, Make-A-Wish New Jersey has created life-changing wishes for over 10,000 children in the Garden State. In the fight against a critical ill- ness, a wish helps kids look past their limitations, families overcome anxiety and entire communities experience joy. Make-A-Wish New Jersey granted a record 560 wishes in its most recent fiscal year.

Q: LEADERS IN LEAST INVASIVE PAIN & SPINE PROCEDURES How can Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment Help Shoulder and Knee Pain?

A:

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy also referred to as PRP Therapy, is a progressive non-surgical treatment to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, ten- don injuries, and ligament injuries. PRP is part of a group of state-of-the-art treatments collectively referred to as Regenerative Medicine. PRP treats an injured area naturally using your body’s own growth factors to accelerate healing. It has been shown to be safe and effec- tive for numerous joint and soft tissue injuries. It has been extensively researched in numerous medical journals and publications all over the world. Some of the many uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include osteoarthritis (degenera- tive arthritis) of the spine, knee, shoulder, hip, hands, and feet, as well as menis- cus tears, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cuff tears. The procedure is simple and is performed in the office. The PRP process begins when a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed from the arm and placed into a special container. The blood is then placed into a device called a centri- fuge which spins the blood to help the separate the portion of the blood which becomes concentrated with platelets, thereby giving the procedure its name. These platelets are important because they release growth factors to recruit stem cells and to assist in healing an injured area naturally. Once the PRP is isolated, it is injected to the injured area under the guidance of an ultrasound machine to help accelerate healing and reduce pain.

This healing works on the simple principle that your body is perfectly capable of healing itself. Your blood contains all the essential components that the body produces to repair tissue damage. Each time you have an injury, the platelets in your blood along with growth factors, stem cells, cytokines, and other elements create a scaffolding on the site. The damaged tissues use this framework to regenerate and repair. The entire process takes approximately one hour, and pa- tients are sent home the same day. Patients on average report more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. This may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In a recent study, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery gave patients with early osteoarthritis an injection of PRP and then monitored them for one year. After one year of the PRP injection, physicians evaluated the knee cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous studies have shown that patients with osteoarthritis can lose roughly five percent of knee cartilage per year, the Hospital for Special Surgery investigators found that a large majority of patients in their study had no further cartilage loss. At minimum PRP also prevented further knee deterioration.

The Logic of Logos and Catchphrases By Pam Teel

Did you know that the Mozilla Firefox logo showing the fox encircling the world is really not a picture of a fox at all but of a red panda? Firefox is the English translation of a Chinese name for red pan- da. It actually demonstrates a rare endangered panda. Mozilla even went so far as to adopt two red panda cubs in 2010, nicknamed “Firefoxes.” The Firefox logo was designed after these creatures so the compa- ny thought it was just right that they adopted a couple of the red pandas, and in 2010 they let viewers take a peek into the cubs lives as a thank you to their users. For a few months people got to log in to a special website to see the cubs grow. The cubs were housed in a special section equipped with web cams at the Knoxville Zoo, which has bred 98 of the animals so far. The firefoxes are actually being used to bring awareness to the plight of the creature. The site also included information for donations to the zoo and to learn more about red pandas. Red Pandas are endangered animals, and these particular cubs are the most vital captive firefoxes to the bloodline of their species. The red panda is slightly larger than a domestic cat with a bear-like body and thick russet fur. The belly and limbs are black, and there are white markings on the side of the head and above its small eyes. Red pandas are very skillful and acrobatic animals that predomi- nantly stay in trees. Almost 50% of the red panda’s habitat is in the Eastern Himalayas. They use their long, bushy tails for balance and to cover themselves in winter, presumably for warmth. Primarily an herbivore, the name panda is said to come from the Nepali word ‘ponya,’ which means bamboo or plant eating animal. Red pandas are the only living member of the Ailuridae family, and their taxonomic position has long been a subject of scientific debate. They were first described as members of the raccoon family (Pro- cyonidae)—a controversial classification—in 1825, because of eco- logical characteristics and morphological similarities of the head, dentition and ringed tail. Later, due to some agreements in DNA, they were assigned to the bear family (Ursidae). Most recent genetic research, however, places red pandas in their own, independent family: Ailuridae. Molecular phylogenetic stud- ies show that red pandas are an ancient species in the order Carniv- ora (superfamily Musteloidea) and are probably most closely related to the group that includes weasels, raccoons and skunks.

There are two recognized subspecies of red pandas within the Ailuridae family: Ailurus fulgens fulgens and Ailurus fulgens styani (also known as Ailurus fulgens refulgens). The styani subspecies tends to be larger and deeper red in color than the fulgens subspecies. They have no living relatives, and their nearest fossil ancestors lived 3 million to 4 million years ago.

TV vs. Films What is superior now? By Nicole Iuzzol n

WE STAND BEHIND IT. SO IT STANDS UP TO ANYTHING. THE #1 RATED HEATING AND COOLING BRAND.

In a society today that is stockfull of tablets, laptops, and iPhone’s, the opportunities to watch a tv show or a film are endless. Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime,

provide endless shows and movies as well, which fulfills every genre. Tomake it even better, these platforms also provide a variety of original content that has never before been seen on TV. These originals have gained massive followings such as Orange is the New Black from Netflix, The Handmaid's Tale from Hulu, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from Amazon Prime. However, all of these popular originals have something in common; they are TV shows. The Guardian explains that movies actually have a lot to learn from TV shows, which involves the development of characters and story telling. Because of this and many more factors, shows are simply just more popular than films. The Guardian states that developing a storyline and a character transformation cannot be done in a 90 minute film in a memorable way. Long running shows can show a character grow into adulthood and find where they belong in the world. This allows the audience to grow a connection or ‘bond’ with the characters and continue to follow them throughout the seasons. These characters can create a following for the show alone. Another big reason for TV shows being more popular thanmovies is that the plots do not have to simple. Films generally are watched for entertainment, and for an intricate storyline, leaving the movie to have to be somewhat simple and understandable for an hour and a half. Shows, whether on tv or a streaming service can create an intense storyline, as the directors know that it will be able to span out for multiple seasons to develop clearly. The storylines in each of these shows as well, are geared towards a certain audience, allowing an intricate storyline for every kind of genre and for every kind of individual. Finally, one of the best things about watching a TV show is the anticipation, even after the episode is over. It keeps people talking. When Pretty Little Liars was on the air, the main villain in the showwas an individual known as ‘A’, who was in disguise for the entire duration of the show. This kept audiences guessing, and always trying to piece together the clues all season long. When watching a movie, you do not have that same anticipation when is over as you do when an episode ends. With a film ending, there is usually a complete wrap up, while an episode of your favorite show leaves you anxious for the next time it is on, as there is usually a cliffhanger. The more anticipation there is, the more it will be talked about. Movies and films are perfect for an early Sunday morning or for a late night treat after work. However, if you are looking to fall in love with a cast and get taken on a journey for multiple seasons, it is better to start a new show rather than a 90 minute movie. Get ready to be hooked from the start and ride a rollercoaster of emotions. This rollercoaster is one purely for those cliff hanging TV shows.

NEED ALLERGY RELIEF? Acupuncture is a great natural treat- ment option for seasonal allergies.

Dr. Lee is incredibly skilled, patient, and compassionate. I had pain and weakness on my left side, and I walked in limping, walked out pain free and walking almost normally. If it wasn’t my own experience, I wouldn’t believe it. But he truly helped me that dramatically in just my first session. I have been to the hospital, doctors, therapists, and Dr. Lee gave me hope and relief like no other. He spent a long time with me and he gave me helpful advice and home instruction. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Lee. With gratitude, L.R.
