WHAT IS POWASSAN VIRUS DISEASE? Powassan (POW) virus disease is a rare, but often serious disease that is caused by a virus spread by infected ticks. 100 cases of POW virus disease were reported in the United States over the past 10 years. POW virus is one of a group of arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) that can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). How do people get infected with Powassan virus? POW virus is transmitted by the bite of an infected tick. POW virus is not transmitted directly from person-to person. Where and when have most cases of Powassan virus disease occurred? Most cases have occurred in the northeastern and Great Lakes regions of the United States during the late spring, early summer, and mid-fall when ticks are most active. Who is at risk for infection with Powassan virus? Anyone bitten by a tick in an area where the virus is commonly found can get infected with POW virus. The risk is highest for people who live, work or recreate in brushy or wooded areas, because of greater exposure to potentially infected ticks. How soon do people get sick after getting bitten by an infected tick? The incubation period (time from tick bite to onset of illness) ranges from one week to one month. What are the symptoms of Powassan virus disease? Many people who become infected with POW virus do not develop any symptoms. POW virus can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord). Symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, weakness, confusion, loss of coordination, speech difficulties, and seizures. How is Powassan virus disease diagnosed? Diagnosis is based on a combination of signs and symptoms and laboratory tests of blood or spinal fluid. These tests typically detect antibodies that There is no specific medicine to cure or treat POW virus disease. Treatment for severe illnesses may include hospitalization, respiratory support, and intravenous fluids. How can I reduce the chance of getting infected with Powassan virus? The best way to prevent POW virus disease is by protecting yourself from tick bites. There is no vaccine against POW virus. 1. Avoid contact with ticks by avoiding wooded and bushy areas with high grass. 2. Find and remove ticks immediately before they have a chance to bite and attach. 3. Apply insect repellents to bare skin, according to label instructions. • Repellents containing DEET can be applied to exposed skin, but only last a few hours. • Clothing and gear can be treated with permethrin, which remains protective through several washings. 4. Bathe or shower (preferably within 2 hours after being outdoors) to wash off and find ticks on your body. 5. Conduct a full-body tick check. Parents should thoroughly check children, especially in their hair.Also examine clothing, gear and pets. the immune system makes against the viral infection. DO YOUNG WORKERS STILL HAVE SUMMER JOBS? Quarterly Workforce Indicators Show Youth Summer Employment Has Fallen Over the Last Few Decades By, Heath Hayward

Young workers were once a consistently growing source of summer labor, but sharp declines coinciding with economic down turns have pushed third quarter youth employment to its lowest level in at least 28 years and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects these trends to continue. Historically, workers ages 14-18 have been much more likely to be employed at the beginning of the third quarter (July 1) than other times of the year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI). This pattern is not true for the overall workforce. The increase in employment from the second quarter to the third for all age cohorts is significantly smaller and there is no consistent decrease in employment from the third quarter to the fourth. Summer employment for young workers also provides a crucial source of labor for employers in need of part-time and seasonal positions. But that may be changing as young workers’ employment in the summer months has trended downward over the last 20 years, failing to fully recover from the early 2000's recession and Great Recession. Summer employment peaks for young workers have changed over time. Although the 14-18 age cohort consis tently exhibits the largest increases between spring and summer employment (third quarter minus second quarter), the magnitude of these increases fluctuates with external economic shocks, such as the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. Going into the Great Recession, the percentage increase from the second quarter to the third quarter dropped to its lowest level. After the recession, the summer employment boom for those ages 14-18 recovered quickly (after an increase of only 8% in 2009) to 17% in 2010 and a consis tent percentage increase in the low 20’s from 2012-2017. Although summer employment and overall employment levels for young workers have rebounded over the last decade, they are still lower than before the Great Recession. Compare that trend with other age groups over this time period and the divergence of older and younger workers’ employment levels since the third quarter of 2000 is stark. Older workers, particularly workers ages 55-64 and 65-99, comprise an increasing share of the employed pop ulation. Interestingly, employment levels for workers ages 14-18 dropped the most during the Great Recession. Summer employment for the youngest workers fell substantially in 2008 and 2009 and has not recovered as quickly as for older age groups.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted summer employment for young workers; we can see workers ages 14-18 had the second largest percentage drop in the beginning of third-quarter employment between 2019 and 2020. Additional quarterly data will allow for a more complete understanding of this dynamic. The top 10 states for share of employment for workers ages 14-18 over the last 20 years are South Dakota, Utah, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana. Summer youth employment in North Dakota weathered the Great Recession better than other states, perhaps due to employment opportunities during the Bakken oil boom. But employment has not kept pace with other states’ growth since 2015. Contrast that with Idaho and Utah, where youth employment was significantly impacted by the Great Recession but has increased dramatically in the last decade. Youth summer employment in Idaho, Utah, and Montana appear to have been impacted the least by the COVID-19 pandemic, as of the third quarter of 2021. YOUTH SUMMER EARNINGS BY STATE Average monthly earnings for young workers for the 10 most recent third quarters (2011-2020) show that the District of Columbia, California, Washing ton, Oregon, and Nevada offer the highest earnings for young workers. Young workers employed in states in the Midwest and South had the lowest summer earnings over this time period. Massachusetts, New York, and Con necticut are in the top five states for third quarter earnings for workers older than 19. Employment in Education Services has grown the most since 1993, followed by Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation. Interestingly, Transportation and Warehousing has also surged in the last 5 years, perhaps due to the increasing demand for delivery drivers and warehouse workers. The Center for Economic Studies oversees the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership, a voluntary federal-state partnership that merges worker

HEALTHY HOME, HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT WHY HAS STORMWATER RUNOFF BECOME SUCH A PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I REDUCE RUNOFF? By, Erin Mumby Urbanization and increasing commercial and residential development have a great impact on local water resources and our health. More impervious surfaces (roads, rooftops, parking lots and other hard surfaces that do not allow stormwater to soak into the ground) increase the rate of stormwater runoff. This means a greater volume of water carrying pollution into surface waters and less water soaking into the ground. These contaminants include litter; cigarette butts and other debris from sidewalks; motor oil poured into storm sewers; settled air pollutants; pet wastes; yard wastes; and pesticides and fertilizers from lawn care. Less water soaking into the ground also lowers ground water levels, which can dry up streams and hurt stream ecosystems, and can reduce the supply of well water. Stormwater also erodes stream banks. This in turn degrades habitat for plant and animal life that depend on clear water. Sediment in water clogs the gills of fish and blocks light needed for subsurface plants. The sediment can also fill in stream channels, lakes and reservoirs, covering the bottom and negatively affecting flow, plants and aquatic life. There are inexpensive ways to control excess runoff created by patios, driveways, sidewalks and roofs. Whatever the soil drainage condition in your neighborhood, landscaping and careful grading of your property's surface area can be used to control runoff, reduce its speed and increase the time over which it is released. For example, land immediately adjacent to your house needs to have a downhill slope so that water does not seep through the foundation. Once the water has been carried 10 feet from the house, the surface should be graded so that runoff is released gradually. Surface runoff can be decreased, and ground water infiltration increased by following these suggestions: Install gravel trenches along driveways or patios to collect stormwater and filter it into the soil.

Berms and swales are slight elevations and depressions in the surface that provide channels along which water will flow. Understanding Pareto’s Law means understanding the idea that 80% of an observed consequence comes from only 20% of the potential causes. This principle deals with the observation that things in life are often distributed unevenly. Vilfredo Pareto himself found, during his study of wealth distribution around the world in the late 1800s to early 1900s, that 20% of the population in Italy owned almost 80% of the land. This theory can be applied to other concepts too like business practices. For instance, a small portion of an organization’s employees can yield and be the cause of most of the company’s profits. The most common use of Pareto’s Law though is time management. Rather than slowly decreasing in productivity when working long hours, people should instead plan and focus on the most important tasks first. When creating a schedule for themselves, one can save time and effort on the job in the long term. Remember that 80% of the output comes from 20% of the time spent at work. The best ways to use the law in regards to time management is by keeping track of one’s time, ignoring distractions, and blocking off a part of the day to work on a high priority task. This efficiency and productivity is one of the many advantages of Pareto’s Law. The theory is also a guide for the best allocation of resources, develops leadership and decision-making skills, and creates time for leisure, relationships, and everyday enjoyment of hobbies. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the principle is not universal and concrete– it is merely an observation. The 80-20 rule doesn’t always apply, and it definitely doesn’t mean that people should ignore 80% of their tasks in favor of the more important ones because that can create a bigger problem over time. It is a reflection of data of the past and not a prediction for the future.

Audrey Hepburn ACTRESS AND HUMANITARIAN - OFFICIAL SPOKESPERSON FOR UNICEF By, Pam Teel

British actress, Audrey Hepburn, (Audrey Kathleen Ruston) was born in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, in 1929. She was born into an aristocratic family; her mother, Ella Van Heemstra, being a Dutch Noblewoman. Her father was a British subject born in Auschitz, Bohemia, Austria- Hungary. He took on one of his ancestor’s surname’s, Hepburn, because it sounded more aristo cratic. The couple wed in 1926 and spent the first three years moving around between Brussels, Arnhem, The Hague, London, and then finally settled in the suburban Brussels municipality of Linkebeek in 1932. Hepburn's early childhood was shelter and privileged. Her multinational background was enhanced through her travelling between three countries with her fami ly due to her father's job. In the mid-1930s, Hepburn's parents recruited and collected donations for the British Union of Fascists. Her mother, Ella, met Adolf Hitler and wrote favorable articles about him for the B.U.F, but soon after, she began to see things differently and changed her mind about fascism. Unfortunately, her husband stayed true to his fascist’s ideals, walk ing out of the family when Audrey was only six years old. Audrey Hepburn often spoke about the effect this had on her being abandoned by her father, who never once came to visit her. That same year, her mother moved them both to her family's estate in Arnhem where Audrey was reunited for a brief time with her two half-brothers. Her father had always wanted her to be ed ucated in England, so in 1937, she was sent to live in Kent, England, where she was educated at a small private school in Elham. After Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939, Hepburn's mother moved her daughter back to Arnhem in the hope that the Nether lands would remain neutral and be spared a German attack, but that didn’t happen. While there, from 1939 to 1945, Hepburn attended the Arnhem Conservatory. She had begun taking ballet lessons during her last years at boarding school, and continued training in Arnhem. After the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940, Hepburn used the name Edda van Heemstra, her mother’s surname, because an "En glish-sounding" name was considered dangerous during the German oc cupation. Her family was profoundly affected by the five-year German occupation. Some of her own family members were executed by the na zi’s for their resistance against them. Her uncle and her mother’s cousins were among them. Her uncle was not involved with the resistance but was chosen to make an example of due to his family’s prominence in Dutch society. Audrey raised money for the resistance by performing ballet and doing fundraisers in illegal musical performances behind blackened invi tation-only locations. The money went to help those who were sheltering the tens of thousands of Jews and other people in hiding across the Neth erlands. This included performing privately in her own hometown of Velp. Hepburn was also a courier for the resistance, delivering messages for them, and served as a volunteer nurse in a hospital that treated allied soldiers. If she were caught performing or delivering messages, she would have been

killed. In her biography, she recalls the memories she had while living amongst the Nazis. More than once she was at the station seeing trainloads of Jews being transported. Seeing all these faces over the top of the wagon haunted her throughout her life. She also saw young men, who went against the Nazis, lined up and shot on the street. She witnessed how people starved and froze to death as Dutch rations were seized by the enemy. Seeing her own relatives killed by the enemy was the turning point in the attitude of Hepburn's mother, who had flirted with Nazism up to this point, and especially after Hepburn's half-brother Ian was deported to Berlin to work in a German labor camp, and her other half-brother Alex, went into hiding to avoid the same fate.
