Famous for her lifestyle brand, Martha Stewart, a businesswoman born in Jersey City and grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, has spent her life building a large enterprise of cookbooks, interior design magazines, and television shows. She wasn’t always in this field, howev er. She was a stockbroker for a firm called Monness, Williams, and Sidel on Wall Street for five years until she and her family moved to Westport, Connecticut in 1972. There, she opened a catering business that quickly grew in size and popularity as it focused on gourmet cooking and unique presentation. Bolstered by the attention, Stewart pub lished her first book Entertaining, followed by cookbooks like Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook Menus. Despite getting a divorce the year before, Stewart released her magazine Martha Stew art Living in 1991, effectively creating the conglomerate Martha Stewart Living Omni media, Inc.. By the late 1990s, she had got

ten her own cable and radio show and more than $700 million in annual retail sales. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1999, which result ed in Stewart becoming a billionaire. Now, she is worth around $400 million. Stewart hit a snag when she was put un der investigation for insider trading in 2002. In the following year, she was charged with securities fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. Despite pleading innocent, she stepped down as CEO of her company, and in 2004, was sentenced to five months in prison. After she was released from jail, Stewart hosted a spin-off reality show that never truly kicked off and a new NBC talk show that aired from 2005 to 2012.
