$1 million may look the same on the cover letter of any state ment, all accounts are not cre ated equal. For instance, a Roth IRA totaling $1 million can offer the same mathematical outcome referenced above. If over the age of 59.5 and distributing from a Roth IRA held for over 5 years, there is no tax consequence. However, if Mr. and Mrs. Retiree were to apply the same strategies to their nonqualified joint bro kerage account, their take-home annual income could be reduced to $28,000 in the interest-only approach and a variable net in come in the combo plan starting at $59,601 increasing to $70,752 in their last year as more tax free basis is returned (assuming

The longing for an answer, a defin itive finish line, has prompted many large financial institutions to market a “number”. Reach this number and you’ll be set. Any one wise and patient enough to run some stochastic analysis will quickly realize there is no perfect “number”. A financially success ful retirement is dependent upon hundreds of variables, some with in our control and others beyond our management. Nevertheless, a frame of reference can at least of fer a starting point.

THE MARKETS So far, we’ve addressed two major wealth-eroding factors in isolation, we’ll do so with the last key variable… the markets. When John Pierpont Morgan (if you don’t know who that is just use the first two initials) was asked what he expected the stock market to do, he famously answered, “It will fluctu ate.” These fluctuations can wreak havoc on a nest egg or buoy your funds to a golden retirement. This introduces a concept known as the sequence of returns. If Mr. Retiree and Mrs. Retiree were to average the same rate of return on their portfolio’s during retirement, but Mr. Retiree experiences bear markets in the early years of distribution, whereas Mrs. Retiree expe riences bull markets during the same years, his money risks depletion far earlier than hers. This is where averages can be somewhat misleading, note the classic example of an investor with $1 million losing 50% in year 1 and gaining 50% in year 2, the portfolio average annual return is 0%, however there is $250,000 missing. This is where distributions can make an invest ment more fragile. So how long will $1 million last in retirement? I don’t know, you don’t know, nor does anyone else. We’ve explored three popular wealth-erod ing factors in isolation, and the reader may notice each exercise repeatedly mentioned assumptions. If we were to combine these three variables the as sumptions only become more exaggerated. Other issues that affect the lon gevity of $1 million include housing costs, food, insurance, transportation, vacation, legacy goals, dependents, location, additional income or financial resources, long-term care, and the ultimate risk/reward multiplier- life ex pectancy. Proactive financial planning that addresses each of these concerns can provide risk mitigation and a potentially longer duration for $1 million.

SPENDDOWN That leads us to the magic question, “How long will $1 million last in re tirement?” The easiest do-it-yourself solution to translate to a spendable asset is to take your nest egg and divide by retirement time horizon. I.e. $1million over a 20-year retirement will offer $50,000 of annual income, assuming a linear paydown with no other influencing factors. Such a retiree will then probably posit that their funds are invested and not just cash under the mattress. This segues into another common solution of interest-only dis tributions, an attempt to preserve principle. Assuming the retiree receives a net return of 4% every year in retirement and peels this off as income, he or she receives $40,000 of annual income. But why not combine the interest with the original linear paydown you ask? If Mr. and Mrs. Retiree were to do so they’d now enjoy $70,752 annually and die right on time after year 20 with zero dollars remaining. INFLATION The figure, one million, has long held an aura about it. To some, $1 mil lion is still a sexy fortune that cures all worries. Others may confess that $1 million just isn’t what it used to be. This concern introduces the first wealth eroding factor, often considered the silent killer… inflation. In 1913, when federal income tax was permanently enacted, $1 million would be equiva lent to a staggering $25.8 million in 2019! In 1945, when World War II end ed, $1million would equal $14.2 million today. In 1981, when the first mil lennial was born, $1million would spend like $2.8 million today. Hopefully you’re getting the idea. If you consider an average retirement from 65 years old – 85 years old that means $1 million at the start will feel like $744,000 at the end, assuming 3% inflation devaluing your dollar. UNCLE SAM The above spenddown scenario offers a nice visual, albeit in a laborato ry-like environment. It would be foolish to ignore one of the most nota ble certainties in life and harshest wealth-eroding factors… taxes. While

Quantum physics is the study of matter and energy at its most basic level: the realm of tiny particles such as electrons and photons. Unlike some popular depictions in science fiction, quantum science won’t shrink you into an alien-fighting Antman or send you «quantum-leaping» through time to solve mysteries. While classical physics has given us a remarkable understanding of how the world works on large scales — think Newton’s first law of motion … a body at rest stays at rest — there are some things it can’t explain at very small scales: the behavior of electromagnetic radiation, for example. That’s where quantum theories come into play. They offer a fundamentally different way of understanding how particles and energy behave at very small scales. The quantum future grows nearer, as scientists and researchers have begun to turn theories into technologies that leverage newly understood quantum properties. It’s an abstract notion that is easier to understand when you consider a concrete example: the quantum computer.

Researchers have been working to harness quantum principles by manipulating subatomic particles to do things such as store and process information in new and exciting ways. While still in the early phases of development, quantum computers «think» and function very differently from your own computer. One day, they will do more than simply function as faster and better computers. But to do that, they need components that have never been built before, based on different principles from the ones that govern the transistors in your laptop. Answering the big questions QIS has the potential to fundamentally revolutionize society, but only after some overarching challenges are addressed. Quantum computers are in development but getting them to the point of commercial viability requires making them more reliable. Quantum computers utilize «qubits» as a basic unit of information storage processing.

But we have yet to scratch the surface of their potential applications. The institute will design and build quantum sensors and make them available for use and testing. The third center, at the University of California, Berkeley, is working to make sure that we’re ready to use quantum computers once they become more viable. After all, what’s a computer without software? Researchers will develop quantum-computing algorithms optimized both for today’s rudimentary computer prototypes and future, error-free quantum computers. One of their goals is to demonstrate that quantum computers can outperform even the top classical computers. Building a quantum workforce We are on the cusp of a new quantum revolution, and we need a well-trained workforce to accelerate it. NSF has been funding quantum research and education since the 1980s, providing support for thousands of graduate students, post-docs, and early career researchers. Now NSF is going even further, finding ways to train students in the flexible thinking needed to learn about quantum and to adopt education concepts that could have broad benefits across the country. Organizers are now putting together web resources for educators and lining up education experts and industry partners to help shape the project and assess progress. There are many more obstacles that we know about between us the quantum future — and even more we don’t and will encounter along the way. But by identifying these roadblocks and giving researchers the resources they need to remove them, NSF is accelerating the quantum revolution. NSF at a Glance The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 «to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…» NSF is vital because we support basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.

Creating a single qubit requires getting a particle into a state known as «superposition.» This process is difficult, requiring highly specialized equipment, and it can be disrupted by something as simple as a loud noise in the room. Creating more stable systems is crucial because, as with any information system, a quantum computer has to be reliable to truly reach its potential. That’s one challenge for quantum computers — but society needs more than just computers. It needs quantum networks. And every component that goes into those networks faces scientific questions just as difficult as those that face quantum computers. Software to control and program these quantum computers and networks is also critical to make the functionality of these systems accessible to innovators seeking to develop novel applications using these systems. To help the research community reach its goals, NSF is tackling some of the big questions through its new Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes, three centers funded at $25 million each to make definitive, measurable progress in QIS. The institutes are the centerpiece of NSF’s Quantum Leap, an agency wide effort to significantly advance research in QIS and quantum technology that has been underway since 2017. The institutes will represent the bulk of Quantum Leap investments through 2023. Keeping qubits stable is a challenge, and the more qubits added to a single processor, the greater that challenge becomes. So one center, at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, is taking a different approach — exploring ways to build multiple quantum processors, each with a relatively small number of qubits, and connect them through quantum links. Systems like these could be optimized for different tasks such as making calculations or storing data, creating stronger, more versatile systems. Another institute, at the University of Colorado, will explore the potential of quantum sensors able to measure everything from light to gravity’s effects. This realm of study could bring us more precise data than any available today. Quantum sensors use quantum phenomena in their detections — that means they’re potentially more sensitive and more accurate than classical sensors.
