a gift of love As indicated on our website, there are numerous charges that are heard in the Municipal Courts in the State of New Jersey. These range from low level motor vehicle violations such as going through a stop sign, careless driving, failure to maintain your lane and other charges that generally carry very low fines and two or less motor vehicle points. If you have been charged with any motor vehicle violation that carries more than two motor vehicle points upon a conviction, we suggest that you obtain the advice of counsel before going to court. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with some information as to whether or not they need legal representation in Municipal Court on a low-level motor vehicle violation that carries two or less motor vehicle points. As most citizens of New Jersey know, municipal prosecutors will, generally, as a matter of course offer a “no point” or “zero point” violation as part of a plea bargain if you are charged with one of these low-level motor vehicle violations. The monetary cost of these “no point” or “zero point” violations are rather excessive in that you are required to pay a $250.00 surcharge for this “privilege.” The statute which provides this “no point” plea is called the unsafe driving statute. The basic theory in accepting a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain is to potentially avoid motor vehicle points on your license in order to keep your auto insurance premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. However, it should be pointed out that there are a number of situations in which your acceptance of such a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain may adversely affect your rights without your knowledge. One such situation is where you have already previously pled guilty to unsafe driving on more than one occasion. Your third guilty plea to unsafe driving within a certain period of time will subject you to four motor vehicle points when you may be under the mistaken belief that you will not be receiving any motor vehicle points. Another such situation where In 2022, the Care More initiative entitles employees of Dolly Parton's Dolly wood Parks and Resorts to a day off that they can use to volunteer at a non profit of their choice. “I think it’s important for everyone to do their share to help their fellow man,” Dolly said in a 2022 speech. “This world is so crazy. I don’t think we even know what we’re doing to each other and to this world.” 2022- Billionaire Jeff Bezos donated $100 million to Parton's Dollywood Foundation in November 2022. Parton was the recipient of Bezos's third-an nual Courage and Civility Award, and can use the funds to donate to char ities of her choice or continue her own charitable work. Other than her financial contributions to ease people’s sufferings from the COVID-19 pandemic, Dolly Parton has also released a 10-week series of bedtime stories on YouTube available for free streaming. She believes that the small gesture of reading bedtime stories for children is a welcome re prieve (for both parents and children) from all that is happening in the world. Parton also created the Mountain Tough. This is an organization that offers resources for everyone affected by the pandemic. The center of the organization is in Sevier County where the singer was born and raised. The God’s love and your compassion for your family by making your decisions today and together. The Underground Railroad NEW JERSEY’S PATH TO FREEDOM By Pam Teel
The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses that were es tablished in the United States during the early to mid-19th century. Its purpose was to help enslaved African Ameri cans escape from the southern states, where they were held in bondage, to get to the north ern states and also to Canada. Most people are familiar with the Underground Railroad knowing that it was not an ac tual railway but a route linking slave states in the South to free states in the North by utilizing abolitionists’ homes, churches, and other properties as places to hide and seek food and shel ter along the path to freedom. Among white abolitionists were many free African Amer
Four main starting points in New Jersey for the Under ground Railroad were, Cape May, Greenwich/Springtown, Salem, and Fort Republic. From there, escape routes led north to Camden, Mount Hol ly, and Central New Jersey, then eventually connecting to Northern New Jersey’s path to freedom. By the 1850’s ap proximately 100,000 slaves had escaped via the Underground Railroad. New Jersey had certain ly played a significant role in helping escapees find freedom. Here are some notable places associated with the Under ground Railway in New Jersey. Peter Mott House- Located in Lawnside, NJ: The Mott House is a museum and a renovated
icans who helped create isolated communities, mostly in rural areas, to hide those escaping; thus risking their lives and safety to aid those seeking free dom. While Canada was a common destination, other routes led to Mexico and to the islands in the Caribbean, which were not part of the slave trade. The Underground Railroad began in the late 18th century and ended when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Runaway slaves often entered New Jersey by crossing the Delaware River or the Delaware Bay at night using small boats operated by local conduc tors (those who guided the escapees.) These boats used a signal of signal lights, yellow on top and blue on the bottom, to indicate safety for landing. Some escapees arrived in canal boats transporting coal from Pennsylvania. These boats had hidden compartments under the cabin covered with coal. New Jersey was an integral part of the eastern corridor of the Underground Railroad as southern slaves traveled through the state to head further north. Several Underground Railroad routes existed in the State. New Jersey was also an active section of the Underground Railroad be cause of its location between two urban centers, Philadelphia and New York City, and because of its close proximity to the slave states of Delaware and Maryland. Although slavery was not extensive in the North, it did exist. Northern states began abolishing slavery in 1774. New Jersey was the last northern state to pass a law that enacted a gradual emancipation of enslaved people in 1804, which allowed children born after the law’s passage to be free at 21 for females and 25 for males. It wasn’t until New Jersey’s 1846 “Act to Abolish Slavery” was passed that slavery became illegal and current en slaved people within the state, instead, could become “apprentices for life.” So, during the 19th century, there were both free and enslaved black resi dents living in New Jersey.
station along the Underground Railroad. It was part of a network that fa cilitated the escape of fugitives in the 19th century. Located in Lawnside, this historic home is the oldest standing residence. Peter Mott was a freed black farmer, carpenter, pastor, and a stationmaster on the Underground Railroad. In 1844, he purchased his first lot in the newly found community of Free Haven (now Lawnside.) This was land set aside by Quaker abolition ists for an African American community. The 1870 census listed him at age 60 along with his wife Eliza. He was listed as owning real estate worth 1000 dollars and he was among one of the richest people in the area. Mott was born in Delaware and was probably a slave at one point before escaping. He died in 1880. According to local evidence, nothing in writing, the Motts were involved in the Underground Railroad and used their home in Snow Hill as a station to help other people of color escape to freedom. The house narrowly escaped demolition in 1992 when a Pennsylvania developer pur chased it to build townhouses on, but people from the community formed the Lawnside Historical Society and saved the house from demolition. The home is now listed on the Register of Historical Places in New Jersey. Historic Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County operates in the city of Burlington. This museum was a private enterprise by Louise Calloway who made it her life’s work and passion to preserve and share the often hidden history of Black Americans and their struggles for freedom and equality. Callaway was always conversing with patrons in her café where she housed her private collection of African artifacts. Her café was right behind a pharmacy that had a reputation as a stop along the Underground Rail road. She enjoyed educating the patrons on black history and slavery and the fight for freedom through the Underground Railroad. Due to financial struggles, she had to close her café/museum, but in 2013, the Burlington

County Commission rescued her collection from her garage and eventually opened the Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County at His toric Smithville Park in Easthampton with Callaway as its curator until her death. Springtown Stagecoach Inn- located in Pohatcong is a documented stop on New Jersey’s Underground Railroad. Springtown Inn, also known as Hixson- Mixsell House, was constructed in 1825 and served as a place for travelers to stop and rest on their journey from northern Pa. east into New Jersey. In Bloomfield, in the basement of the Bloomfield Steak and Seafood House, deep in the cellar is a link to the roots of American History and the Underground Railroad. The building was built in 1676 and was then known as the old Joseph Hosue. The basement was connected to a tunnel that was originally used to transport women and children during the Revolutionary War to escape British soldiers. Centuries later it was used as a means of es cape and safety for enslaved people on their way to freedom. The Underground Railroad movement was made up of people who fo cused on other people so they could be able to live their lives free regardless of their skin color. New Jersey was often a final stop on their trek to freedom and also a dangerous one as the Garden State was the last northern state to abolish slavery. In Montclair, the prominent Crane family gifted property to the first freed slave in the area. His name was James Howe. The Howe house, a historic home, still exists today on Claremont Avenue. An old toll booth near the top of Bloomfield Avenue close to the Verona border was often patrolled by bounty hunters looking to capture people on the run. If people could make it to the Howe House, they would find refuge and safety. The tunnel from the Howe house ran for more than a mile to the Bloomfield Steakhouse. From there one would go to the Morris Canal and end up in Newark or Jersey City. Once you crossed the Hudson, you were free. Burlington Pharmacy was used as an Underground Railroad station even before the Civil War. Constructed in 1731, the High Street building was also used as a meeting place for antislavery rallies hosted by Quaker abolition ists. (around the corner Louise Callaways café. ) The Macedonia African Episcopal Church- is located in Camden’s first
stories, freedom-seeking slaves were hidden in the attic or hay mow and later transported by covered wagon to Mt. Holly. Greenwich Township- Slaves who traveled over the Delaware Bay found refuge in the swamps of Greenwich Township. At Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, members helped freedom seekers rest from their travels. an 1898 study acknowledged five congregants of the church as Underground Railroad operatives. The summer house of rich Quaker Enoch Middleton in Hamilton Town ship was also a frequented station along the Underground Railroad. Mid dleton moved from Philadelphia to Hamilton with the intent to become a stationmaster and a conductor helping escaped slaves travel from his home to Allentown, Cranbury, or New Brunswick. In 1826, George Haines built a home on North Main Street in Medford. The town’s first resident Doctor, Haines was also a Quaker abolitionist and used his home as a shelter on the Underground Railroad according to com munity legend. English Quaker Elisha Barcklow’s home on West Main Street in Moorestown was reportedly used as an Underground Railroad station. Lo cated on a major transportation route in the 19th century, it linked northern and southern New Jersey. Back then the route was known as Kings Highway. The Goodwin Sisters House in Salem City is the state’s most well-known Underground Railroad site. Abigail and Elizabeth Goodwin were Quaker abolitionists who set up their Market Street home as a station in 1838. The sisters’ nephew kept a diary that documented how the home was used as a sanctuary along the route. Woolwich- The Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church has been named a station with two of the members conclusively named as op eratives. The town not only has been acknowledged as a stop but several Woolrich residents were escaped slaves at one time. Current members of the congregation proudly affirm that they are descendants of freedom-seeking slaves. Cranbury’s history sites that the Cranbury Inn was part of the Under ground Railroad. Freedom seekers coming from Crosswicks Village or Al lentown would stop to rest at the Inn on their way to New Brunswick or
other Northern stations in New Jer sey. Enoch Middleton had accounted that he had brought many runaway slaves in his covered wagon to Cran bury as they sought freedom further north and in Canada. I’m sure there were many other safe houses along the way. Many of these underground site locations have been passed on orally through time. Not much is documented for fear of get ting in trouble with the law. These sites bear witness to the courage, re silience, and compassion of those who risked their lives to help others find freedom. No man should be the property of another. Hopefully, we have learned something from history and we can only improve on the mis takes of the past.
black community of Fettersville. Rev erend Thomas Clement Oliver, the pastor of the church during the 1840s was the most notable Underground Railroad operative. His parents were also conductors of the movement. After the Civil War, he spoke open ly to one of the first Underground Railroad researchers in 1898 and ex plained how the network operated in that area. The church was likely a safe haven for escapees traveling from Philadelphia or Southern Jersey. The Edgewater House at Croft Farm in Cherry Hill was another Un derground Railroad Station. Quaker abolitionists Thomas Evans, and his son Joseph, used their home as a safe house. In 1918, an Evans descendant wrote that according to his family’s

Interesting People Throughout History JULIA BUTTERFLY HILL — TREE HUGGER By Pam Teel
Environmental activist, Julia Butterfly Hill, was born in 1974. She is best known for having lived in a 200-foot tall, 1000-year-old, California redwood tree for 738 days between December 1997 1999. The tree, affectionately named Luna, was slated to be cut down by the Pacific Lumber Company. Hill eventually made an agreement with the lumber company to save the tree. Hill’s father was a traveling min ister, so in her early years, she went from town to town living in a 32-foot camper with her parents and two brothers. While camping out in various places, Hill always enjoyed discovering the hidden gems in the area. She would love
dropped to my knees and began to cry. I connected with a higher purpose for my life. These beau tiful forests were being clear-cut, and I wanted to do something.” Hill learned many survival skills while living in the tree, such as seldom washing the soles of her feet, because the sap helped her feet stick to the branches bet ter. She used solar-powered cell phones for radio interviews, be came an “in-tree” correspondent for a cable television show, and hosted TV crews to protest old growth clear-cutting. With ropes, Hill hoisted up survival supplies brought by an eight-member support crew. To keep warm, she wrapped herself tight in a sleep
to take hikes and explore rivers. One day a butterfly landed on her finger and stayed with her for the duration of her hike. (Where she acquired the nick name butterfly.) It wasn’t until Hill was in middle school that her parents decided to stop traveling and settle down in Arkansas. When Hill was 22 years old, she was involved in a near-fatal car crash. She was hit from behind by a drunk driver. The steering wheel of the car she was driving penetrated her skull. It took over a year of extensive therapy before she was able to walk or speak normally. During that time of convalescence, she felt that her whole life had been out of balance. Graduating from high school at 16 and going right to work, she found herself obsessed with career, money, and material things. The crash woke her up and gave her a new di rection in life. She wanted more of a spiritual connection than just all work and no gratitude for it. She decided to take a road trip to California and attended a fundraiser to save the forests. She was interested in the group of front liners who had been taking turns tree-sitting in the giant redwoods in Humboldt County to keep the logging company from cutting down more of the ancient redwoods. The trees were on a windswept ridge overlooking the community of Stafford. On New Year’s Eve 1996, a landslide in Stafford caused by the clear-cut logging resulted in most of the community being buried by 17 feet of mud and tree debris, and eight homes were destroyed. Organizers wanted someone to stay in the tree for a solid week and when no one else volunteered, they picked her, even though she was not officially affiliated with the environmental organization. Soon afterward though, she was actively supported by many other environmental groups. So, on Dec. 10, 1997, Hill climbed the 1,000-year-old tree to a height of 180 feet. It took another hour and a half to create a makeshift base and bring the rest of the provisions up. She was happy when she could undo her harness and finally rest from exhaustion on the two 6 by 4-foot planks that formed her platform. There she remained for two years and thirty-eight days. Hill stated, “When I entered the ancient redwoods for the first time, I
ing bag, leaving only a small hole for breathing. For meals, she used a sin gle-burner propane stove. Throughout her ordeal, she weathered freezing rains and 40 mph winds from El Niño, helicopter harassment, and a ten-day siege by company security guards who blocked her team from supplying food to her. She was intimidated by angry loggers who downed trees around her very close to the redwood she was in. Only about 3 percent of the an cient redwoods remain today after being cut down by loggers. The winter of 1997-98 was a particularly brutal one in Northern Califor nia due to the powerful El Niño storms. “One night I thought I was going to die,” Hill wrote in The New York Times . “The wind was 90 m.p.h. Imagine you’re on a bucking bronco. Put that bronco on a ship at sea, in the middle of a storm; then put those 180 feet in the air. I was broken, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, suffering frostbite, and cut off from the only people that cared whether I lived or died. I grabbed Luna (the tree’s nickname) and started praying.” Hill said she survived by learning to live as one with Luna, swaying with the tree as its branches bent in the winds. A resolution was reached in 1999 when the Pacific Lumber Company agreed to preserve Luna and all trees within a 200-foot buffer zone. In ex change, Hill agreed to vacate the tree. In addition, the $50,000 that she and other activists raised during the cause was given to the logging company, as stipulated by the resolution. The money was then donated to Humboldt State University as part of the agreement for research into sustainable for estry. Unfortunately, later in 2000, Vandals cut into the tree with a chainsaw. A large gash in the 200-foot redwood was discovered by one of Hill’s support ers. The gash was treated with an herbal remedy, and the tree was stabilized with steel cables. The bracing system helped the tree withstand extreme windstorms with peak winds between 60 and 100 miles per hour. As of spring 2007, the tree was doing well with new growth each year.

Caretakers routinely climb the tree to check its condition and to maintain the steel wires. Luna is under the stewardship of Sanctuary Forest, a non profit organization. Since her tree sit, Hill has become a motivational speaker (holding some 250 events a year), a best-selling author, and the co-founder of the Circle of Life Foundation (which helped organize We The Planet, an eco-friendly music tour) and the Engage Network, a nonprofit that trains small groups of civic leaders to work toward social change. On July 16, 2002, Hill was jailed in Quito, Ecuador, outside the offices of Occidental Petroleum, for protesting a proposed oil pipeline that would penetrate a virgin Andean cloud forest that teems with rare birds. “The cloud forest is stunning,” she said. “It’s this deep, lush green, spangled with explosions of red, yellow, and purple from the flowers, birds and insects. The environmental destruction they saw along the pipelines that had already been built was horrendous.” Hill was later deported from Ec uador. In 2003, Hill became a proponent of tax redirection, resisting payment of about $150,000 in federal taxes, donating the money to after-school pro grams, arts and cultural programs, community gardens, programs for Na tive Americans, alternatives to incarceration, and environmental protection programs. She stated that she takes the money that the IRS says goes to them and she gives it to the places where her taxes should be going. In 2006, Hill protested the sale of the South Central Farm in an attempt to save the 14-acre farm from developers. Julia Butterfly Hill’s time with Luna had far surpassed the record for the world’s longest tree sit at more than eight times the previous 90-day record. The experience had affected her so deeply, she said, that she now thinks of her life in terms of “before tree” and “after tree.” “The person I’d been when I’d gone up and the person I was when I came
• On December 10, 1998, a benefit concert was played at the Mateel Com munity Center in Redway, California during Julia’s “tree sit”. Artists per forming were Bob Weir and Mark Karan as an acoustic duet, the Steve Kimock Band, and the Mickey Hart Band. Hill took part in the event, reading her poem “Luna” via telephone while the Mickey Hart Band was performing “The Dancing Sorcerer”. • The character Sierra Tierwater in the 2000 novel A Friend of the Earth by T. Coraghessan Boyle was partially inspired by Hill. • Hill was the subject of the documentary Butterfly (2000) broadcast on PBS POV. She is also featured in the documentary film Tree-Sit: The Art of Re sistance . Both films document her time in the redwood tree. • The 2000 twelfth-season episode of The Simpsons called “Lisa the Tree Hugger” was conceived when writer Matt Selman heard a news story about Hill. • In Penn & Teller’s 2003 first season of their documentary television show, Bullshit , Hill appeared as a Special Guest Expert on the episode “Environ mental Hysteria”. • Hill and her events were featured in the 2010 Michael P. Henning docu mentary film Hempsters: Plant the Seed . • The main character of the 2017 Swedish children’s book Julia räddar sk ogen (Julia saves the forest) by Niklas Hill and Anna Palmqvist is named after Hill. The book is about a child who occupies a tree in order to hinder the construction of a new highway. • In The Overstory, by Richard Powers, the character Olivia Vandergriff, is loosely based on Hill. • Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall wrote a song called “Kissed by Mist” about Hill.[41] • In 2002 Los Suaves made a song in honor of Hill called “Julia Hill” on the Un paso atrás album in which the singer is “Luna”. • The Red Hot Chili Peppers 2003 song “Can’t Stop” contains the line “J. Butterfly is in the treetop”. • Neil Young made a reference to Hill in the
down were so profoundly different that I wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to live in the world again,” Hill told The Sun in 2012. “When I set foot on the earth, there was a lot of emotion. There was extreme joy because we’d protected the tree and the grove around it, which a lot of people had said was impossible. But there was also sadness. I had be come so much a part of that tree, and it had become so much a part of me, that I wasn’t sure I would fit in with other people.” Hill started the “What’s Your Tree” project to im press on people that even if they can’t sit in a tree for two years, they can still have a cause that drives them. “What’s Your Tree helps people clarify their pur pose and passion, then take action,” Hill told The Sun . “We all have our own version of a tree sit that’s out there waiting for us. It’s our life’s calling. There is a ‘tree’ for every one of us, and this tree can call us to be bigger than we believe ourselves to be and to create a life that is more amazing than we can imagine.” Even today, Hill’s legacy lives on. She has been the subject of several documentaries, interviews, and books, including her own 2000 memoir, The Legacy of Luna , and has influenced numerous musicians:
2003 song “Sun Green” on the Greendale album in which the title character: “Still wants to meet Julia Butterfly”. • Casey Desmond wrote a song called “Julia Butterfly Hill” which appeared on her 2006 album No Disguise • In 2009 Idina Menzel wrote a song called Butterfly referring to Hill. Julia is still fighting for many causes but more be hind the scenes due to injuries sustained from be ing rear-ended, not just the first time, but from two more car accidents after that. None of them were her fault. She also has severe asthma that got worse after all the inhaling of all the smoke when she was up in Luna from the clearcut burning. She had 2 hip replacements and learned that she had late-stage Lyme disease that severely damaged her, gave her a heart attack, and made her brain foggy and messed up for quite some time, but she still strives on fight ing for her causes.
