CAPTAIN KIDD’S VENTURES IN NEW JERSEY YIELD NO FOUND TREASURE By, Nazli Mohideen Captain William Kidd, a pirate from Scotland, is believed to have buried treasure in New Jersey after traveling along the state’s coastline, according to an article published by the New Jersey Digest. After an early start to learning how to sail, Kidd worked to take down ships belonging to the French during the Nine Years’ War. Eventually, he relo cated to New York where he married and helped father the two daughters of then-widowed Sarah Oort, according to an article written by Mark Cart wright for the World History Encyclopedia. Cartwright said during Kidd’s voyage through New Jersey, Long Island and Gardiners Island, he supposedly left some of his treasure behind includ ing gold, silver, and jewels. “This tantalizing legend has led to treasure hunters digging holes across the centuries in any possible loca tion even remotely connected to Captain Kidd, none with any success,” he said. “The only tangible result of Kidd’s habit of burying treasure is that it has become a staple part of fictional pirate tales ever since.” While the number of people trying to look for these treasures has lessened over the past two de cades, Carter Pennington, partner of Gold Digger Innovative Products, said the best time to search is directly after a storm, so any potential treasure can be seen from under the sand, according to a segment of “Ask Away” by NJTV News. Following multiple piracy-related incidents and the murder of William Moore, a member of Kidd’s crew, Kidd was arrested and spent time in Newgate Prison before being sentenced to death in late May of 1701, Cartwright said. Though his hanging was already public, he said Kidd’s body was left to rot in the open to discour age other pirates from committing similar crimes. “Rather than deter pirates, Kidd’s terrible fate only made them more determined to fight to the death rather than be taken alive by the authorities,” Cartwright said. Despite his controversial legacy regarding wheth er Kidd truly deserved the title of being a pirate or not, he managed to stay remembered as one of the most well-known pirates to visit New Jersey. In an article written by Richard Cavendish for History Today, he said, “Kidd became a legendary figure largely because no one ever discovered what had happened to the rest of his treasure – if there really was any more to be found.” Medicaid/J.A.C.C.
