The Allentown Afghans are Back!
The Allentown Public Library is pleased to let the community know that the Allentown Afghans are back! Originally created and sold by the Women's Association of Allentown, the afghans are once again available for the first time since 2008. The afghans were designed by Joanne Tourine, a local artist, who created the images of the nine historic structures that span the 17th to the 20th century. They include the famous Imlay Mansion, Gov. Newell's home, the Presbyterian Church overlooking Conine's Mill Pond, the John Clutch House, the Farmer's National Bank, Abel Cafferty's Mill house and the iconic Mill, the Allentown Public School built in the 1920s as a high school and now part of the elementary school, and the Allentown Baptist Church that is now home to the Allentown Public Library. Each afghan comes with a history that provides a short "bio" of each building. The afghans come in 3 colors: hunter green, cranberry, and colonial blue. They are available for purchase at the Library, 16 S. Main Street, Allentown, NJ. These afghans are a wonderful gift for newcomers to the area, for those who are moving away, for students going off to college, and for anyone who has an affection for the village of Allentown. All proceeds benefit the Allentown Public Library Association in support of the Library building.
