safe. However, concrete is very hard and is less forgiving on the joints in the lower half of your body. The constant pounding and impact on your joints could cause joint and muscle soreness if done often. Asphalt, although not as hard as concrete, is still one of the harder surfaces you may encounter and is also less forgiving on joints in your legs, not to mention being unsafe due to cars that may be passing by. Dirt trails can be a great place to run as it is much softer than concrete and asphalt surfaces and usually comes with an amazing view. The ter- rain often comes with hills and uneven surfaces that may make it more difficult to jog longer distances. It is important to gradually progress the distances traveled as well as to pace yourself to not overexert your- self. Another beautiful terrain is the beach. Sand is a very difficult surface yet very good for stabilizing muscles in your body. The uneven and unstable surface will give you quite a workout, so it is important to pace yourself. Finally, what is probably the best surface to run on, a synthetic track. A track is a soft rubber surface that gives you bounce and is very easy on the joints in your legs. The downside, running in an oval over and over again may become boring. No matter what surface you can get to in you free time, it is important to work on cardiovascular strength. Get outside and enjoy the beauti- ful weather to come!
