Presents or Presence
The Holiday Season is a time when many families gather and celebrate the happiness and joy of being together. However, for some, including many of our senior citizens, the joy of the season is lost in the sadness and depression as they feel isolated and alone. Why is sadness and depression seen more frequently during the holiday season? For many people, the holidays are an emotional time when thoughts of loved ones gone and happier times cause many people to feel sad and isolated. Seniors can also be affected by health concerns and limited mobility and these limitations can further isolate as seniors stay home, unable to visit family and friends. Limited mobility can also prevent shopping, decorating and baking which are all associated with the merriment of the season. Finally, living in a nursing home or assisted living facility and also having a limited income can further contribute to their sadness and depression. So, how can we help our elderly friends and families be part of the joy of the season? If you ask most seniors, they will tell you, it’s not about the material presents, but rather the gift of our presence. Lift the spirits of an elderly person by spending time with them. Help decorate their tree or home or perhaps help them to bake cookies. If a senior resides in a nursing home and if they are able to leave, bring them to your home to be part of the holiday festivities. By investing a little time, the magic of the season can also be part of your senior’s life.

QUESTION: I get bloated when I consume dairy and I get fatigued when I eat wheat. Do I have food allergies? ANSWER:
252 W. Delaware Ave Pennington, NJ 08534
A food allergy occurs when the immune system responds abnormally to food proteins. These allergies are classified by type of immune reaction. An IgE immediate food allergy is the classic peanut allergy. The immune response is fast - symptoms usually starting within 30 minutes. Hives, itchy/ swollenmouth, throat discomfort, difficult breathing, vomiting/diarrhea are the characteristic symptoms. It is potentially a life-threatening situation. A “skin prick” test is used to diagnose which foods (or additives to foods) are causing the immediate food allergies. An IgG or IgA food allergy produces chronic symptoms. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition where IgG and IgA antibodies attack the gluten in wheat and then cross react to the intestinal wall. Damage to the intestinal wall causes poor absorption of nutrients and can lead to health problems like anemia and osteoporosis. A blood test is used to diagnose celiac disease. Food sensitivity is a delayed reaction to foods that occurs up to 72 hours after consuming the food. Many believe it involves the IgG antibody class. The most common symptoms include abdominal bloating and pain, joint pain, headache, brain fog, fatigue and rashes. Because the symptoms are common and delayed from the triggering foods, many people with difficult to diagnose symptoms will request these kinds of food sensitivity blood tests. Recent advances in food sensitivity testing has made these tests much more accurate and revealing than they used to be. Food intolerance is a reaction to food that does not involve the immune system. Lactose intolerance is a condition of varying degrees of bloating, abdominal discomfort and diarrhea caused by low levels of the enzymes needed to break down cow’s milk. Treatment of adverse reactions to foods is avoidance of the triggering food or food additives. The trick is to know your triggering foods.

QUESTION: What’s new in dentistry today?
For many years dentists would promote their practices as “Cosmetic Dentistry”. To many, the term cosmetic dentistry would mean the use of veneers to make the front teeth look whiter and healthier, or the use of composite restorations instead of the silver, amalgam fillings. Today, when the term “cosmetic” is used, it also needs to include “facial esthetics”. It is not correct to separate the teeth and their appearance, from the smile or even the rest of the face. The entire facial structure needs to be evaluated when you want to achieve that perfect smile.
David P. Young, DMD, DICOI Unfortunately, as we age, changes occur not only to our teeth and gums, but also the muscles of the face. As these muscles relax, facial tone and fullness diminish and wrinkles develop. To achieve optimal esthetic goals this needs to be addressed as well, not only the broken yellow front teeth. With the use of Botox and Dermal Fillers, a more youthful beauty can be restored to your face and your new smile will radiate even better. Millions of people use Botox and Dermal fillers to achieve a more relaxed and smooth facial appearance, while still having the freedom of expression. Not only is Botox used for esthetic purposes, it is very helpful for people who suffer from TMJ syndrome, chronic migraine headaches, and other types of facial pain. Botox is an FDA approved purified protein which is injected into targeted muscles and temporarily blocks signals that cause muscle movement, essentially relaxing the muscle which reduces or eliminates fine lines and wrinkles. An attractive smile can significantly improve your image and self-confidence. Total facial esthetics will bring out your full beauty potential. For further information on Facial Esthetics and Cosmetic Dentistry, feel free to contact my office for a consultation. Your smile is not limited to how good your teeth look, it’s how you radiate with total facial beauty.

Alzheimer’s Awareness By Lauren Kolacki Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive disease that results in memory loss and other cognitive abilities that interfere with everyday life. In early stages, it is noticed that an individual will have trouble remembering newly acquired information. As the disease worsens, more difficulties present themselves as the individual becomes more confused and experiences additional memory loss. Those suffering from Alzheimer’s may not recognize it due to the cognitive changes they are experiencing, however, the symptoms will be present to family members and friends. As early diagnosis and intervention methods improve dramatically, so do treatment options and support resources. That is why spreading awareness regarding this mind-altering disease is so important, to be able to improve the suffering individual’s quality of life as much as possible. Alzheimer’s New Jersey is an organization dedicated to performing this exact operation. Additional funding is needed for Alzheimer’s research and resources so Alzheimer’s New Jersey is determined to get it. Their goal is to advocate for those who are affected by this heart breaking disease. Their mission is to respond to the needs of people in New Jersey who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, by providing programs and community partnerships that increase awareness and access to services. There are several programs run through the foundation that can be very beneficial to an individual with Alzheimer's or the people in their life. In addition to helping to advance research, Alzheimer’s New Jersey offers community-based support, assistance and education through their Helpline, Respite Care and Wellness Program, Family Support Groups and Education Programs for family caregivers and healthcare professionals. There are several opportunities to contribute to the fight against Alzheimer’s. Komen CSNJ Volunteer Melanie Gibson Shares Passion to be MORE THAN PINK By Megan Romanczuk
H E A L T H A R T I C L E S A N D Q & A
Volunteers at Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey (Komen CSNJ) play a vital role in our community, dedicating countless of hours and commitment to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. Without the efforts of their passionate hearts, we would not be able to accomplish all we do. Today, we are shining our spotlight onMelanieGibson, star volunteer for the fight against breast cancer. She helps manage LOLA’s in Manalapan, New Jersey, and began her journey with Komen CSNJ through this role. “LOLA’s styled the fashion show at the 2016 Pink Power Party at iPlay America with Komen CSNJ,” said Gibson. “This is where I fell in love with the mission along with the staff and other volunteers, and of course the survivors.” Since then, Melanie has continued volunteering for Komen CSNJ and enthusiastically lends a hand whenever she can. She has continued to model for the fashion show at the Pink Power Party each year, while helping with event publicity and promotion on social media. One of Melanie’s favorite volunteer memories has been working the 2017 Race for the Cure, where she used her sales skills and bubbly personality to help sell Komen CSNJ swag on event day with her co- worker Jeanine. Seeing the survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer at the event “gleaming with hope” as they walked together in the survivor procession was an incredible moment for Melanie, one that still resonates with her.
“It made me feel like no matter what happens in life there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and although the path to get to it may be rough, the outcome is all worth the while,” said Melanie. Being a Komen CSNJ volunteer has been an amazing experience for Melanie, allowing her to meet new people while helping those who’ve been through the most unimaginable struggle—breast cancer. “Volunteering for Komen CSNJ makes me feel like I am contributing as much as I can in the fight to end breast cancer,” said Melanie. “By volunteering, it makes me feel like we can all do a small part in trying to raise awareness and end this disease forever.” Melanie is looking forward to being part of the MORE THAN PINK Walk as a volunteer on Sunday, November 4 at Six Flags Great Adventure. You’ll see her big smile at the Komen CSNJ merchandise tent once again! She is looking forward to seeing the Komen CSNJ staff and event participants, while celebrating the “sea of survivors and their family surrounding them with love and support on a day that we honor them and fight for those who lost their battle to the disease.” For those interested in getting involved, Melanie wants you to know that your time, effort and dedication make a true difference. “At the end of the day after a long event, it feels amazing knowing that I could have possibly made a small impact on the fight to end breast cancer,” said Melanie. The Komen CSNJ team is thankful for Melanie’s incredible dedication and passion. These body changes and symptoms are commonly associated with decreased estrogen. However, decreased estrogen is not the only cause of vaginal dryness. It is important to stop using soap and powder on the vulva, stop using fabric softeners and anticling products on your underwear, and avoid wearing panty liners and pads. Vaginal moisturizers and lubricants may help. Persistent vaginal dryness and painful intercourse should be evaluated by your healthcare provider. If it is determined to be a symptom of menopause, vaginal dryness can be treated with low-dose vaginal estrogen, or the oral selective estrogen-receptor modulator ospemifene can be used. Did you know the change in seasons can affect your mood? Now that the cold, darker, winter weather is upon us, you may be starting to feel different than you did during the summer months. The atmospheric pressure is changing and that can be a contributing factor to you experiencing headaches, sinus congestion, muscle aches and soreness, increased joint pain and stiffness and even trouble sleeping and concentrating. Over the next several months when there is less sun light, there is less vitamin D readily available for our bodies to absorb – this can contribute to a more sluggish feeling during the day and a less restful sleep at night. Chiropractic manipulation can help to keep your nervous and immune systems functioning the best they can, which can make a huge difference, especially during the change of seasons. If you find yourself or anyone you know beginning to suffer as we head into winter, please give me a call! REMEMBER - KEEP YOUR SPINE IN LINE AND YOU’LL BE FINE! Think Vaping is Safer than Smoking? 10 Reasons to Reconsider By Robert Pedowitz, DO
When a patient asks if vaping is safer than smoking, I tell them that neither is safe, potentially pose health risks, and that both habits should be broken. While vapes—also called vapor cigarettes, electronic ciga- rettes, or e-cigarettes—have been marketed as a safer alterna- tive to smoking traditional cigarettes, there hasn’t been enough research for me to safely tell my patients that it is indeed safer. A Closer Look at Vaping A vape is an electronic device that simulates the feeling of smoking tobacco by heating a liquid to generate an aerosol, called a “vapor,” that the user inhales. The liquid in the vape, called e-liquid or e-juice, is usually made of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, and flavorings. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has yet to regulate e-liquid ingredients, study the safety of inhaling these prod- ucts, or deem that e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. While the agency is expected to release guidelines, they are a few years off. Because there isn’t data on how these substances can affect your body, it’s difficult for me to advise my patients about their use. What I do know is that several aspects of these products have been proven unsafe in other uses: 1. Nicotine: Most e-juice formulations include nicotine, which we know is harmful and addictive. It can cause de- lays in brain development if used at a young age, leading to attention deficiency, learning, and mood issues. 2. Propylene glycol: We know that this chemical—even if a person is only exposed occasionally—can cause throat or eye irritation, and inflammation of the lung. 3. Flavors: With tasty-sounding flavors like cotton candy, butterscotch, and blueberry cheesecake, many e-cigarette companies are aiming to attract teens, whose bodies are still developing. Because vaping businesses aren’t required to reveal the chemicals in these flavors, we simply don’t know what our children are inhaling—and the long-term effects of their use. While the Flavor and Extract Manufac- turers Association have regarded some of the chemicals in flavors as “safe,” the majority of data doesn’t look at how the body reacts when the chemical is inhaled, as opposed to ingested in a less-intense quantity in a food product. 4. Aldehydes: Some flavors contain aldehydes, a compound of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The most common com- pound in this group is formaldehyde. Most versions cause inflammation of the respiratory tract and, with exposure over time, have been linked to cancer. 5. Diacetyl: The use of this chemical, which simulates the taste and smell of butter, has been linked to a condition called popcorn lung. It has been found to cause damage to the lung, particularly inflammation of the lining of the lungs, causing them to look like popcorn. Despite being outlawed for use in microwave popcorn, diacetyl is still used in many e-cigarette flavors, including vanilla, maple,
and coconut, as well as alcohol-flavored, candy-flavored, and fruit-flavored varieties. 6. Cannabis use: Some flavors can include cannabis oil, which is derived from the cannabis plant, the same source as marijuana. The use of cannabis oil in vapes is not yet regulated. Aside from the addictive properties of cannabis, there’s also a danger if the plants have been grown using herbicides and pesticides, which can become concentrated when inhaled, increasing cancer risk. 7. Addictive properties: The flavors used in vapes can alter the rate of nicotine absorption due to the pH balance of the liquid. For example, strawberry e-juice has higher pH level, so the rate of nicotine absorption is accelerated. If your goal is to ween yourself off of nicotine, you could be inhaling more nicotine while vaping, not less. 8. Secondhand affects: The aerosol generated by vapes can contain droplets of nicotine and other toxins that have been linked to cancer. 9. Liquid dangers: e-cigarette juice can cause poisoning when ingested, so it’s important to keep them away from young children. They also can damage the skin. 10.Explosion risk: Vapes have the potential to explode, since the devices feature condensed air (think of an aerosol spray can) and a heating element. Kids and Vaping More than 25 percent of children and teens in middle school and high school have admitted to trying vaping, according to the U.S. Surgeon General. Is vaping a gateway product to stron- ger drugs? Maybe. There is evidence that cannabis use in all forms is on the rise among this impressionable age group. Further, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2016 found that of adolescents who said they vaped, the activity was associated with a higher risk of more frequent and heavy smoking among study participants six months later. The bottom line is that smoking—whether cigarettes, vapes, hookah, recreational marijuana, or cigars—is bad for your health. At least with traditional smoking I have a solid body of evidence I can use to guide care and prescribe tools to quit. There is no body of knowledge on vaping, so my ability to care for its side effects is limited. If you think you have a smoking-related medical condition or are interested in quitting, contact your primary care physician. Dr. Robert Pedowitz is board-certified in family medicine and is a doctor of osteopathic medicine. He is the medical director of Family Practice of CentraState, which has offices in Freehold, Jackson, East Windsor, Colts Neck, Marlboro and Monroe. He can be reached by calling 866-CENTRA7.

Taking Care of Your Knees at Every Age The knee is the largest joint in the body, making it vulnerable to a wide range of problems. Being aware of these prob- lems and how to prevent them can help keep your knees healthy throughout your life, says Frederick Song, MD, an ortho- pedist on staff at Princeton Medical Center (PMC). OVERUSE INJURIES: In young athletes, overuse injuries are increasingly common, including patellofemoral syn- drome, a dull pain caused by irritation under the knee cap. These injuries are often caused by playing the same sport year- round, which weakens muscles that protect the knee. Playing different sports during different times of the year can help prevent injuries by working different muscle groups. “The number one way to treat overuse injuries is to temporarily stop playing that sport, and work on a supervised strengthening program”, Dr. Song says. “It’s hard for parents and athletes to commit to stopping, but it can prevent more serious problems.” TRAUMATIC INJURIES: Injuries from stopping or changing directions too quickly, or colliding with someone, are common in youth athletes as well as young and middle-aged adults. These injuries include ligament tears and tears of the meniscus, which acts as a shock absorber between knee bones. Adults who participate in sports should also vary their activities and perform exercises to strengthen the hamstrings and quadriceps — muscles that support the knee. Keeping your core muscles strong is also essential for injury prevention. For tears, treatment usually involves surgery to remove or repair the damaged meniscus or reconstruct the ligament. DEGENERATIVE INJURIES: In adults over 50, the most common knee problem is osteoarthritis, the gradual break- down and loss of cartilage. It’s difficult to prevent arthritis, but keeping your weight down, strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee and focusing on low-impact exercises such as swimming and biking can help. Osteoarthritis is first treated conservatively with physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. Second-line treatments include injec- tions to reduce pain or improve lubrication in the knee. “If a patient exhausts these treatments and continues to have pain that affects their daily activity,” Dr. Song says, “then we discuss knee replacement.” When to See a Doctor Sudden pain and swelling due to injury should be evaluated as soon as possible. Swelling that comes on gradually and doesn’t improve in a matter of days with rest and ice, should also be brought to your doctor’s attention. PMC offers a full range of services to help patients return to active, comfortable living, and is rated as High Performing in hip and knee replacement by U.S. News & World Report.

Monmouth Crossing Receives its seventh consecutive Advanced Standing distinction MonmouthCrossing, CentraStateHealthcare System’s senior assisted living community, has received its seventh consecutive Advanced Standing distinction from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. Designed to elevate quality, the Advanced Standing program is a voluntary program open to all licensed assisted living facilities and comprehensive personal care homes in New Jersey. Monmouth Crossing received this distinction by demonstrating compliance with all local, state and federal regulations and submitting quality data that reached benchmarks set by its peers. Quality standards that assisted living facilities must demonstrate to receive this distinction include ongoing employee training and high resident and family satisfaction scores. Only those facilities that meet these qualifications are eligible for the certification. Heleyne Gladstein, administrator of senior services explains, “This award is a great testament to our level of service and recognizes the compassionate care that our residents and their families have come to expect from the staff at Monmouth Crossing.” Monmouth Crossing offers apartments including studio, one and two-bedroom designs. Residents at Monmouth Crossing receive a personalized care plan created by registered nurses, and services are customized to meet each resident’s needs andpreferences. The community also offers separate residential services for seniors with memory disorders. Residents actively plan social and cultural programs, local and regional trips, holiday celebrations and oversee their own community governance. For more information about Monmouth Crossing, call (732) 303-8600 or visit www.monmouthcrossing.com.

Caring Connections of New Jersey By Lauren Kolacki
As Sheli Monacchio attended another networking event, she couldn't help but think, “There has to be a more efficient way to bring professionals together for the right reasons.” The issue with these events is that by the time the group got through formalities and introductions, there was not enough time to make any further connections with other professionals. As Sheli brainstormed, it occurred to her, a networking organization that would connect health care professions with educating seniors. She acted on that idea and in 2011, she founded Caring Connections. Caring Connections is a nonprofit organization, soon to be a 501(c)(3), that provides education to seniors, over 65, and their families, as well as, lend support to those professionals that provide them with healthcare and other services. Alongside Sheli, President and founder, is Linda Mundie, Vice President, Cris Brown, Secretary, and Katie Chambers, Treasurer. Since 2011, Caring Connections has created a network of over 600 qualified healthcare professionals and has expanded into seven counties; Monmouth, mercer, Middlesex, Ocean, Somerset, Burlington and Buck County, Pennsylvania. In 2019 they plan to spread into Union and Camden county. The Goal of Caring Connections is to educate seniors in the community and provide reliable resources to them. By doing so, Caring Connections hopes to put a halt to seniors haphazardly googling, looking for guidance. When they end up on the internet, they put themselves at risk for scams and fraud- ulence. There is also a Speaker's Bureau that focuses on educating seniors, their family members and the health care professionals who serve them. The speakers are experts in their field and are available to speak at facilities, senior centers, senior community clubs and local libraries and public spaces. Their "educa- tion only" approach is welcomed by seniors, professionals, families and caregivers throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. "Education only”, meaning they will not use this time to solicit seniors but to share community events, and topics on educating seniors and their families on resources that are avail- able to them before a crisis hits. The members of Caring Connections provide care from the heart while staying up to date with the best practices and building relations with other quality health care professionals. Once a month a meeting is held where your entry fee is a can of food (to be donated). This is an opportunity for the health care professionals to network with one another. The biggest change to this group is opening the website to seniors. If they need a speaker on anything from 'safety in the home' to 'how to pay for a nursing home', they now have access to find their topic of choice and are able to request a speaker. There is also social media available where they can post in the group or privately message other members. This acts as a great support system for those who may need it. If seniors have access to resources and prior education, they will be prepared, in the event of a crisis, that is why Caring Connections is so important. Seniors and family members can find these resources or additional information at https://caringconnectionsnj.org or on their Facebook group called New Jersey Resources for Seniors-CCNJ where they can post questions and have professionals and other members provide a great support system for those who need it.
