Princeton's Ask the Doctor May/June 2018
“Don’t Let Time Define Your Beauty” 1. Question: Why choose non-invasive aesthetic medicine over plastic surgery? Answer: Non-invasive aesthetic medicine has made tremendous advancements over recent years, with respect to the variety of treatment options, the extensive technological advancements and the substantial growth in provider knowledge/skill. More and more men and women are choosing non-invasive treatments over traditional plastic surgery because the effects are great, there is little to no recovery time, and there is significantly less cost and medical risk associated with this alternative. With appropriate at home care and in-office maintenance treatments patients can reap the maximum long-term benefit of these treatments (offset ongoing aging and environmental damage). 2.Question:What are themost popularnon-invasive treatments available? Answer: Laser/device and injection based treatments are amongst the most popular and can be used used individually or in combination to effectively treat conditions like wrinkles, volume loss, acne/acne scars, brown spots, melasma, redness, rosacea, excess body hair (via laser hair removal), excess body fat (via Coolsculpting) and more! The best aesthetic clinics will have a variety of lasers and devices, versus a “one for all” solution. The most popular injectables are Botox for treatment of wrinkles/fine lines and Dermal Fillers like Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, Restylane and Belotero for volume loss. 3. Question: Are there more “natural treatment” alternatives to laser and injection based treatments? Answer: If you are not comfortable with jumping right into lasers and injections, there are a variety of more natural therapies that are just as innovative! For example, the very popular PRP with Microneedling treatment is the controlled insertion of very fine short needles into the skin followed by application of platelets rich in plasma (drawn from your own blood). This is most often used for acne scar correction, anti-aging and hair rejuvenation and bears excellent results with minimal downtime! If you are not comfortable with drawing blood, an alternative growth factor serum can be used in combination with Microneedling. Ultherapy is perhaps the most effective treatment for correcting loose/saggy skin, and uses very safe Ultra Sound energy to create mini injuries very deep beneath surface skin level in order to stimulate natural healing and tightening by the body’s innate healing process. Results are extremely impressive and continue to build for months and months following the treatment. This is by far the safest, most effective and long- term treatment option for aging concerns.
