Medical research is always bringing new information to us including new recommendations for taking Vitamin E. Discovered in 1922, Vitamin E was found to be an antioxidant. The drop of Vitamin E in your bottle of olive oil prevents the oil frombecoming rancid. This is an antioxidant effect. Vitamin E is naturally found in plants (where it acts as an antioxidant) and exits as a family of compounds with similar structure. There are four tocopherols and four tocotrienols in this Vitamin E family. Researchers learned that after eating green leafy plants, humans kept recycling the alpha tocopherol in their blood so it was thought to be the most important of the eight compounds. Alpha tocopherol was then synthesized from soy and sold as a supplement for cardiovascular protection. This “new” antioxidant would be expected to have benefit in the prevention of coronary heart disease, macular degeneration, cognitive health and cancer. But research on the benefits of alpha tocopherol have been equivocal and often disappointing. Researchers began looking at the other tocopherols and tocotrienols. One thing became clear: toomuch alpha tocopherol can inhibit the benefits of the other tocopherols and tocotrienols.

The most beneficial compounds in the Vitamin E family appear to be delta and gamma tocopherol and especially delta and gamma tocotrienols. Research using tocotrienols have finally shown the promise of Vitamin E: cholesterol lowering, anti-inflammatory, lowering blood pressure, anti-cancer, and improving: insulin sensitivity, fatty liver, macular degeneration, cataracts, skin and bone health. Food higher in tocotrienols include rice bran oil, palm oil and the Amazonian Annatto plant seeds (which are 100% tocotrienols!!) The American diet is low in tocotrienols so look for a natural Annatto based high delta-tocotrienol supplement. Dose would be ~ 100mg/day taken with a meal.
