2022 State Championships USA Gymnastics NJ By Pam Teel
The Level 3 State Championship was held at Head Over Heels in Parlin, NJ on March 19th. Action Gymnastics, based in Freehold, NJ, won the Level 3 USAG NJ 2022 State Championship with a (116.050), breaking the State Re- cord set in 2014 By ACE Gymnas- tics (116.025). Coach, Ashley Quinn, used posi-
tive motivation working with these young ladies. She instilled confidence in them and taught them a great work ethic. She helped forge a great relationship with them all, one that will last for years to come. Team members, Gia Shanks, Emiliana Polito, Hadley Shanks, Ellie Simmons, Mia Guberman, Jemma Percodani, Ariella Figliolia, and Anabelle Poli- to, excelled at their individual competitions; each having a place on the podium in their respective age groups. Twelve plus hours of gymnastics a week, along with their school work, and other activities, didn’t slow down their determination to do the best job that they could. All of their hard work paid off as they “Took Action” and put themselves in the NJ history books! Two of the team members, who excelled in their competition, are from Millstone Township. Congratulations to Anabelle Polito and Emiliana Polito, and all the rest of the young ladies who made it happen. Emili- ana and Anabelle, along with their talented teammates, worked hard this season for 14 hours a week in the gym and it paid in dividends. These two sisters are out of the house from the time they leave school until they get home from practice around nine o’clock at night, three days a week, plus 5 hours of practice on the weekend. Some people would say it’s too much for them, but they love the sport, their gym, their coach, and their teammates, so they don’t see it as work. It was tough for the girls to transition onto a new team and into a high- er skill level, especially after their original coach retired, but they soon adapted to the months of conditioning and applications of new skills. It also didn’t make it any easier with Covid hindering people’s normal way of life, but it did not deter them from the season long goal of winning the USAG Level 3 state Championship. Two of their teammates broke multiple state records and each gymnast on the team earned a spot on the podium for their individual events. “This was truly a wonderful accomplishment,” stated the girls dad, Mi- chael Polito. “Not only were they the team placing first out of 27 other teams, and over 180 girls in the state, but they also broke the state record set back in 2014 of a 116.025 with a 116.050. Anabelle took 2nd overall, 1st on the floor, 2nd on the beam, 2nd on vault, and Emiliana took 4th overall in their respective age groups. When these aspiring gymnasts are not flipping and tumbling, they are reading, doing arts and crafts, or playing Roblox. It is great to see two sisters excel together on the same team and support one another in and out of school and the gym. In school they both are great students and classmates, and really enjoy their teachers. The two look forward to this upcoming summer to spend some down time at the shore and go to their first sleep over camp at the International Gymnastics Camp in Strouds- burg, PA with several of their teammates. Their coaches, parents, and the gym they belong to, couldn’t be any prouder of their journey through a year filled with obstacles and covid restrictions. These hardworking kids just broke a NJ state record. Con- gratulations for a job well done!
