The History of Bluetooth By: Nazli Mohideen Bluetooth is a popular form of wireless technology, letting users share data across short spaces. Common devices Bluetooth connects to include tablets, laptops, computers, and of course, smartphones. Jaap Haartsen, an engineer from the Netherlands, helped in bringing the idea of Bluetooth to life. Haartsen began these contributions as early as 1994. He studied different types of technologies in hopes of finding one which would be able to connect data from a phone to other devices, Haartsen said. About five years later, Bluetooth officially launched with a headset as its first-ever product. But, the interesting history of Bluetooth doesn’t stop there. In fact, Bluetooth was named after King Harald Gormsson of Denmark. Jim Kardach, another engineer who contributed to the early developments of Bluetooth, was reading a book about this Gormsson at the time. Kardach said Gormsson “was famous for uniting Scandinavia just as we intended to unite the PC and cellular industries with a short-range wireless link.” King Gormsson actually had the nickname of Bluetooth, but the origin as to how this nickname came to be is still unclear. Some believe it was because Gormsson had a dead tooth which had a bluish color, while others think it was simply because he enjoyed eating blueberries. Gormsson allegedly held the official name known as Bletand (which means blue) during his reign. The inspiration Kardach drew from Gormsson and the Vikings also translated into Bluetooth’s logo as well. The logo showcases letters from a language the Vikings used to communicate in, specifically the letters “H” and “B” as in Harald Bluetooth. Today, Bluetooth has been up and running for nearly 25 years. There are also different versions of Bluetooth now differing in speed, reliability, and the https://theauris.com/blogs/blog/the-history-of-bluetooth | https://www.yourtechstory.com/2020/02/29/how-jaap-hassrtsen-changed-the-world-with-application-bluetooth/ https://www.nature.com/articles/s41928-018-0186-x#:~:text=The%20technology%20was%20publicly%20announced,not%20yet%20have%20Bluetooth%20embedded. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/why-called-bluetooth_l_5cdd7c62e4b01571365d568a https://www.businessinsider.com/bluetooth-name-origin-2017-3 | https://www.headphonesty.com/2021/01/bluetooth-versions/ Joseph J.
