How Costly it Can Be to Choose the Wrong Car Color By Abigail Urban When it comes to picking out a car, there is more to weigh in than just the model and the year it was made. Choosing one color versus another can end up costing you hun- dreds, or even thousands of dollars. According to consumerreports.org, many carmakers can charge extra for cars with certain paints, usually cars with metal flake and tri-coat pearl finishes. Cars with red and yellow finishes are more expensive than colors that are silver, black, white or grey. The costs of owning a bright-colored car may extend beyond the day you make your last car payment. If you are ever in need of a repair for your car, expect the paint that costed more originally to be more expensive to repair. It is also more difficult to sell cars at a later date if they aren’t timelessly stable colors like black, white or grey. Thisismoney.co.uk reports that a woman who chose a pink Range Rover actually wiped at least £3,000 off the value of her car. Cars that are personalized, especially sporting a unique and quirky color, may not appeal to a wide variety of buyers. The outside color of your car isn’t the only variable to consider when choosing a car. According to Mark Bulmer, a consumer specialist interviewed by thisismoney.co.uk, matching the interior color with the exterior color is important in order to increase the chances of selling the car as it ages.

Certain car colors may not only make a car unsellable in the future, but they may also put you and others in danger. Although black cars never go out of style and are easier to resell, consumer affairs expert Kevin Pratt of moneysupermarket.com re- ports that black cars are 47 percent more likely to be in a road accident than cars with any other colors. White, gold and yellow cars are safer colors considering they are brighter and make a car more visible on the road. Black cars, as well as other darker colored cars such as silver, grey, blue and red, tend to blend into scenery, making driving at night particularly dangerous. So, while a pink Barbie-themed car may be an eyesore to buyers and increase the initial price of the car, it is safer to drive. Every car color has its perks and its downfalls. It is wise to consider what color works best for you and fits your preferences before purchasing a car. Whether you want to express yourself with a vivid color, choose an inexpensive and easy-to-sell darker tone, or choose a brighter and more visible paint job, there is a rainbow at your dis- posal and the choice is all yours.
