Art for a Cure: A Successful Charity Auction By Lisa A. Tomaszewski When a loved one is struck with a terrible disease there is an inevitable feeling of helplessness that can consume those sur- rounding them. A couple of years ago this very situation occurred at Lawrenceville Home Improvement when one of the owners was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. As a family business you can only imagine how devastating this has been for the members of the team and, in particular, for the immediate family. The Art for a Cure auction, which took place on February 27, was an opportunity for the entire Lawrenceville Home Improve- ment team to try to do something to help combat this horrible disease. Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells. In multiple myeloma, malignant plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, crowding out the normal plasma cells that help fight infection. The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) was created to push for the advancement of multiple myeloma therapies and investigates and funds the most promising treatments for the disease. All proceeds from the Art for a Cure went to support the MMRF. Over 30 pieces of art were donated to the Art for a Cure silent art auction by local artists and supporters from further afield. Art varied from watercolor paintings to oils on canvas to jewelry to a quilt. The event took place at the Lawrenceville Home Improvement showroom in Lawrenceville, NJ on February 27 and had over 50 people in attendance. Organizers of the event are pleased to report that they exceeded their fundraising goals and are thrilled to continue to support the efforts of the MMRF.
