May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, led by the President’s Council on Fitness Sports and Nutrition. This month highlights the importance of healthy lifestyles, and being physically active. The month of May is the ideal time to get outside, be active, and enjoy nice weather. The sunny days entice seniors to venture outdoors for a healthy dose of physical activity. There are many benefits of exercising when you’re a senior, including: • Improves your strength, helping you stay independent. • Improves your balance, preventing falls. • It gives you more energy. • It prevents or delays diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis. • It can improve your mood and fight off depression. • It may improve cognitive function. While it’s great to see seniors outside and active when the weather is nice, they also need physical education and activity year-round.
