Allentown Residents Clean Up AME Cemetery Following Storm
Allentown residents gathered to help clear brush in the Union AME cemetery off of Hamil- ton Street. The debris had been left by recent storms, including Tropical Storm Isaias. Volunteers included Councilwoman Martha Johnson, Council candidate Erica Torsiello, and former mayor Greg Westfall. Several veterans are buried in the cemetery, including Sgt. George Ashby, New Jersey’s oldest surviving Civil War veteran and long-time Allentown resident. The cemetery is adjacent to the recently created Sgt. George Ashby Memorial Park.
