KIDS Preparing a Sanctuary

Sophia Schindel completed the top award with Girl Scouts, the Gold Award under Mill- stone troop 1098. She created a sanctuary for the Millstone Community Senior Center. It is a tranquil area where seniors can gather to sit and chat with each other and enjoy the outdoors. Sophia cleared an outdoor area and then planted shrubs and flowers to surround the seating benches she had built. Donations were raised and a lot of labor intense hard work was performed. Sophia will attend Rollins College in Florida this fall. She was accepted into the Business Accelerated Master’s Program. She will also be a member of the Rollins Women's Lacrosse Team. Volunteerism is something Sophia is familiar with as she has been involved with Special Olympics NJ since she was 10 years old. Sophia has been able to maintain strong academics as shown through her acceptance into the National and Math Honor Societies in Allentown High School and even the Na- tional Junior Honor Society in Millstone Middle School. Her volunteering did not get in the way of her doing her best in school. Sophia has always wanted to help the Millstone community through Girls Scouts, recre- ation programs and Special Olympics. Sophia felt there was a need to provide the seniors in the Millstone community a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors near the Senior Center. This Girl Scout Gold project was her way to give back a permanent sanctuary space for the Millstone senior community. She can be reached (609) 426-4392, if any further information is needed.
