DO YOU NEED A LAWYER IN MUNICIPAL COURT? BY JOHN BAZZURRO As indicated on our website, there are numerous charges that are heard in the Municipal Courts in the State of New Jersey. These range from low level motor vehicle violations such as going through a stop sign, careless driving, failure to maintain your lane and other charges that generally carry very low fines and two or less motor vehicle points. If you have been charged with any motor vehicle violation that carries more than two motor vehicle points upon a conviction, we suggest that you obtain the advice of counsel before going to court. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with some information as to whether or not they need legal representation in Municipal Court on a low-level motor vehicle violation that carries two or less motor vehicle points. As most citizens of New Jersey know, municipal prosecutors will, generally, as a matter of course offer a “no point” or “zero point” violation as part of a plea bargain if you are charged with one of these low-level motor vehicle violations. The monetary cost of these “no point” or “zero point” violations are rather excessive in that you are required to pay a $250.00 surcharge for this “privilege.” The statute which provides this “no point” plea is called the unsafe driving statute. The basic theory in accepting a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain is to potentially avoid motor vehicle points on your license in order to keep your auto insurance premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. However, it should be pointed out that there are a number of situations in which your acceptance of such a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain may adversely affect your rights without your knowledge. One such situation is where you have already previously pled guilty to unsafe driving on more than one occasion. Your third guilty plea to unsafe driving within a certain period of time will subject you to four motor vehicle points when you may be under the mistaken belief that you will not be receiving any motor vehicle points. Another such situation where you potentially will need legal representation is where the low-level motor vehicle violation is the result of a motor vehicle accident. The bottom line is that, regardless of what type of motor vehicle violation you are charged with, you should seek the advice of an attorney before appearing in Municipal Court by yourself and entering into a plea bargain which may subject you to other legal ramifications of which you were not aware. Typically, when we receive a call for a motor vehicle violation, we initially attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the potential client to determine whether or not they will require legal representation given their individual circumstances. Accordingly, please feel free to contact us to discuss your individual situation to determine whether or not legal representation is required.

LOVE FLOWETH, FROM HEAVEN TO EARTH By Richard Mabey Jr.

In June of 1970, I completed my junior year at Boonton High School. My fami ly belonged to the Trailmates Chapter of the National Camping and Hikers Asso ciation. There were about 12 families that belonged to this group of family camp ers. The Landers family was one of the families who would go camping with all of us. Penny Landers had just completed her sophomore year of high school. She was very smart, kindhearted and very pretty. During our time of family campouts, Pen ny and I would play chess together, on a picnic table at a vacant campsite, that we were always able to find, no matter what state park our families were camping at that particular weekend. Penny was an in credibly great chess player.

fully so. It was a Saturday afternoon. We watched a movie in Penny’s living room, sitting together on the couch, while Mr. Lancaster sat in his easy chair. Then we went out to Penny’s backyard. Penny had this game setup in her yard, it was like horseshoes, they called it Ring Toss. Instead of playing with horseshoes, you would toss this circular rope at the stakes, to try to get the ring onto them. It was a fun time. Then we ate supper. Mrs. Landers was very kind to me. I can’t say that Mr. Land ers made me feel all that welcome. His el dest daughter was coming of age and hav ing a boy over for an official date. I don’t think that settled too well with him. Penny and I dated for two years, through my senior year at Boonton High and my freshman year at County College of Mor ris. In September of 1972, Penny left for Rutgers University. We had promised to stay faithful to each other. Sometimes the most earnest of promises get broken. Sad ly, we drifted apart.

Inevitably, our conversations during our chess games would focus on books that we had recently read. At the time, I was totally absorbed into Thomas Wolfe’s novels. I was in the midst of reading, Look Homeward, Angel. To my surprise, Pen ny had already read the book. I think that was a turning point for me. Looking back, the moment that Penny had told me that she had read Look Homeward, Angel, was the very moment that I fell off the Grand Canyon, in love with Penny. I was a very shy boy. I didn’t have much self-confidence. I had a damaged Mitral Valve, so I couldn’t play sports. And in 1970, sports were everything at Boonton High School. I lost myself in poetry, novels and in playing the snare drum in the school marching band. I wanted all so much to ask Pen ny for a date, but I felt so strongly that I was way out of her league. I would think to myself, “What would a smart, pretty girl like Penny Lancaster, ever see in me?” Although I never mentioned it to my father, Dad knew that I liked Penny a lot. It was during our annual week-long hike of the Appalachian Trail that Dad talked to me about Penny. It was now July of 1970, we pitched camp somewhere in the forest of Eastern Pennsylvania. Dad and I were alone to gether, outside of our makeshift tents, cooking stew. And Dad told me, in no uncertain terms, that I had to stop putting myself down. That I had to dig deep within myself and get the courage to ask Penny for a date. Well, at the next campout of the Trailmates Chapter, I found myself play ing chess with Penny. Somehow and someway, I managed to get the cour age to ask Penny for a date. My palms were filled with sweat. My heart was beating like a big, old bass drum. I inwardly trembled, after the words came out of my mouth. There was that two second pause from Penny. Then, her response came, quietly, almost shyly, “yea, that’d be nice.” I was 16, Penny was 15, when we had our first date. Mom drove me to Pen ny’s house in Paterson. Penny’s father was a bit strict with her. And, right

My dear friend, Penny and myself, from June of 1972.

We stayed friends till Penny’s passing in November of 2012. Sadly, Penny lost her battle with lung cancer. Although all trac es of romance had evaporated, a kind of kinship still lived in our hearts for each other. We became adopted cousins to each other. I would write email letters of encouragement to Penny, during her time of her fight with cancer. She would write me back that she dearly appreciated my kindness. I know that this may not coincide with the religious beliefs of many peo ple. But since I was diagnosed with Severe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, I have had many, many visitations from Penny. I’ll be working on a story, and I’ll feel Penny’s presence powerfully strong beside my desk. Almost every night, Penny visits me in dreams, so real and vivid that it seems like it’s all so real and not just a dream. Penny assures me that there is a God and a place we call Heaven. Can God be limited? Can God be put into a box, of our liking? Is it pos sible that a dear and cherished friend, residing in Heaven, can become a guiding angel? I know what I experience is powerfully real. Spiritual love, not a romantic love, but a true spiritual love between two people cannot be limited, be boxed in. Love is the most powerful force in the universe. It is the foundation of miracles. It knows no limitations. Love is the most endearing force known to mankind. Truly, it is the foundation of miracles. CHILD, ADOLESCENT & ADULT PSYCHIATRIST TAXPAYERS MUST REPORT GIG ECONOMY EARNINGS WHEN FILING TAXES

A Gig worker is a person who does temporary or freelance work, especially an independent contractor engaged on an informal or on-demand basis. Whether it’s a full-time job or just a side hustle, taxpayers must report gig economy earn ings on their tax return. Understanding how gig work can affect taxes may sound complicated but, it doesn’t have to be. The IRS offers several resources to help gig economy taxpay ers properly fulfill their tax responsibilities. Here are some things gig workers should keep in mind. Gig work is taxable: • Earnings from gig economy work is taxable, regardless of

By Mia Ingui A 130g serving of beans, peas, chickpeas and len tils can help you stay trim. Scientists found they are effective without other dietary changes.

er dietary changes, according to a study. A 130g serving - three quarters of a cup - of beans, peas, chickpeas and lentils can help a person lose weight and keep it off, in the absence of any other dietary changes, a new study has revealed. Scientists analyzed the results of 21 clinical trials involving 940 men and women. They found that adding a single serving of pulses to the diet led participants to lose an average 0.34 kg (0.75 pounds) over six weeks. Lead researcher Dr Russell de Souza, from St Mi chael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada said, “Though the weight loss was small, our findings suggest that simply including pulses in your diet may help you lose weight, and we think more importantly, pre vent you from gaining it back after you lose it.”

Expert believe that legumes help a person feel fuller and this discourages their appetite, which en ables them to lose weight. Eating lots of beans, chickpeas and lentils have long been favored by the health conscious as foods that are low in fat. But now research finds that diets rich in beans can actually make you slimmer if you add them to your diet. Eating just a 130 gram serving — three quarters of a cup — of beans, peas, chickpeas or lentils each day can help you stay trim without making any oth

QUESTION: What is Optomap retinal imaging?

ANSWER:

The optomap ultra-widefield retinal image is a unique technology that captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image while traditional imaging methods typically only show 15% of your retina at one time. Your retina (located in the back of your eye) is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly. This means that in addition to eye conditions, signs of other diseases (for example, stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes) can also be seen in the retina. Early detection of life-threatening diseases like cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. It also facilitates early protection from vision impairment or blindness. Early signs of these conditions can show on your retina long before you notice any changes to your vision or feel pain. While eye exams include a look at the front of the eye to evaluate health and prescription changes, a thorough screening of the

free. It is suitable for every age, even children. The capture takes less than a second. Images are available immediately and you can see your own retina and exactly what your eye care practitioner sees in a 3D animation. Most importantly, early detection means successful treatments can be administered and reduces the risk to your sight and health.

What draws us to the place we call home? Is there some inner calling, deep within the core of our heart cen ters, that draws us to a specific, pin point place on the planet? My peo ple were drawn to the land known as Peace Valley, by the Native Americans. They came to this place long before the Revolutionary War, in the early 1600’s. They sought the comfort of the foot hills of Hook Mountain. The flowing waters of the Passaic and Pompton Rivers. This land, this parcel of land,

But it was ever-so-slightly filled with a tinge of brotherhood. A brotherhood for the cause to win the war. “Private, how would you like to work on the planes? Fix them up?” My father simply replied, “I’d like that, sir.” The lieutenant then looked to his sergeant. “Ser geant have this private begin mechanic’s training, tomorrow morning.” “Yes, sir,” the sergeant replied. The lieutenant looked my dad in the eye. Then pointed to a nearby airplane hangar. “Mabey, report to the hangar tomorrow morning, o seven hundred hour, right after breakfast.” “Yes, sir,” Dad replied. “Sergeant, let’s go,” the lieutenant commanded to his jeep driver. My father’s life was about to change. He was about to begin a new venture, in his long-stay at Hickam Air Field. My dad told me that story a few dozen times. Life is so funny at times. Miracles do happen. I doubt if that lieutenant had any idea why he told his ser geant to drive over to my dad that fateful mid-af ternoon. I think the good Lord had something to do with it. The story goes that my dad climbed down from atop the fuel truck and saluted his sergeant and his lieutenant.

of roughly seven square miles, was once known as Beavertown, before being named after the great president, Abraham Lincoln. My father came into this world in the home that his father had built at the end of Mabey Lane. Dad grew up among the pine, the elm, the oak, and the maple. He worked with his father at the family ice house, located along the old Morris Canal, just due east of Incline Plane Ten East. But now my beloved father was in a strange place, halfway across the globe, living on an airfield in Hawaii. It is the Summer of 1943. Practically the entire world is at war. It’s been a full year now, that Dad has been in the U. S. Army Air Corps. And as my Grandma Mabey prayed for her two sons, Edward and Richard, to be protected by the good Lord’s grace; Dad was climbing the ladders at tached to long fuel tank-trucks, to fuel up the hun dreds and hundreds of military planes that filled Hickam Air Field. There comes a moment in time. A precious mo ment, it is. A lieutenant rode across Hickam Air field. He watched this young private, climb the ladder to reach the top of the fuel truck. This lieu tenant was watching my dad, working quickly and efficiently, almost with a cadence of overflowing enthusiasm that drew the attention of this young lieutenant. The lieutenant asked his sergeant, who was driv ing the jeep, if he knew who this young, enthusi astic, hard-working private was. The sergeant sim ply answered the lieutenant, saying, “his name is Mabey.” “Sergeant drive over to Mabey,” the lieutenant or dered.
