Senior Spotlight: CHARLENE OLAVIDES

Charlene Olavides is a soft spo ken, but hardworking student at MTHS. She enjoys exercising, shopping, and watching episodes of Parks and Rec , but often spends time baking and sharing her sweet treats with friends, too. Olavides is particularly gifted in the arts with singing and playing the pia no being her biggest passions. She is a dedicated member of the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, Tri-M Mu sic Honor Society, and French Honor Society. For these organi zations, she has done countless hours of community service and maintained exceptional grades. Most recently, she volunteered at the 2021 MTHS Fall Coffee house for Tri-M as well as helped raise $200 to go towards pediatric cancer research during Septem ber, Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, on behalf of the French Honor Society. Olavides has also been a Principal’s List student for the entirety of her high school ca reer. Even though she works at Wawa,

Olavides is incredibly involved at the school. She is a member of the Key Club, Student Council, and Red Cross Club. Additionally, she is a singer for the Treble Chorus and acts as Attire Coordinator for Choir Council.

Olavides is President of the school’s French Honor Society chapter, Société Honoraire de Français, as well. Of all the classes she’s taken, her favorite was Language Arts with Ms.

Sundstrom during her junior year. While the curriculum often included analyzing more tra ditional works like Shakespeare, Ms. Sundstrom encouraged class discussions which included “modern issues and topics that aren’t normally brought up in a classroom”, Olavides described. She found this teaching style to be refreshing, especially during the virtual learning environ ment. Olavides is still undecided on where she’d like to attend college, but plans to get her masters in Public Health. “…I know I want to work in health-care relat ed public policy because I believe that is a uni versal priority.” Olavides hopes to one day work for the World Health Organization.

These range from low level motor vehicle violations such as going through a stop sign, careless driving, failure to maintain your lane and other charges that generally carry very low fines and two or less motor vehicle points. If you have been charged with any motor vehicle violation that carries more than two motor vehicle points upon a conviction, we suggest that you obtain the advice of counsel before going to court. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with some information as to whether or not they need legal representation in Municipal Court on a low-level motor vehicle violation that carries two or less motor vehicle points. As most citizens of New Jersey know, municipal prosecutors will, generally, as a matter of course offer a “no point” or “zero point” violation as part of a plea bargain if you are charged with one of these low-level motor vehicle violations. The monetary cost of these “no point” or “zero point” violations are rather excessive in that you are required to pay a $250.00 surcharge for this “privilege.” The statute which provides this “no point” plea is called the unsafe driving statute. The basic theory in accepting a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain is to potentially avoid motor vehicle points on your license in order to keep your auto insurance premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. However, it should be pointed out that there are a number of situations in which your acceptance of such a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain may adversely affect your rights without your knowledge. One such situation is where you have already previously pled guilty to unsafe driving on more than one occasion. Your third guilty plea to unsafe driving within a certain period of time will subject you to four motor vehicle points when you may be under the mistaken belief that you will not be receiving any motor vehicle points. I want to be very sensitive here. The three doctors that I went to, at different times, were all very sincere. I believe they were doing their very best to help me with my HCM. But the hard, cold truth is that they did not really have the specialization of working with treatments for HCM. It was not their fault. HCM affects one in 500 people. So, the average cardiologist does not come across a lot of patients with HCM. I prayed and prayed and prayed to find a doctor who was very well versed in treating HCM. I never gave up. I focused my energies into deep prayer. I held steadfast focus. The kind of focus that a soldier might hold in heart and mind, just before facing a battle. As if the odds were a million to one, the door opened for me to be seen by a cardiologist at the Uni versity of Florida Medical Center (Shands) who specialized in treating patients with HCM. My specific classification of HCM is known as Apical HCM. It requires very, very specific treatments and prescrip tion meds. And, yes, the meds are rather expensive. Am I out of the woods now? Not by a long stretch. But with my new prescription meds, I have been getting less and less chest pains. I’m not as easily winded. Yes, I still do get chest pains. But they are not as frequent as they once were. And now, I can walk around the block, without getting overwhelmingly winded. I’m making some degree of progress to getting back on track. I am convinced, without a shadow of a doubt, that the door that opened to my getting treatment at UF Med Center, was the result of deep prayers, holding steadfast faith, and persevering with a laser-fo cused energy on finding a path to healing. Know this: God loves you more than you will ever know. Miracles really do happen. Prayer is the key to unlocking the doors that are holding you back. A deep belief in a miracle, coming to you in your life, is essential for supernatural events to unfold. Hold deeply to this golden truth: God loves you more than you will ever know. This is Millie. I have to share her sad story with a very happy end ing. Millie was found tied to a pole in Sanford, Florida at a boating dock. My boyfriend (from Millstone Township) was in Florida visiting his brother, nephew, sister-in-law and grandfather. They all passed this little 17-pound Jack Russell, before taking their boat out for the day. A couple of hours later they returned from boating, and she was still there tied to the pole as well as a woman feeding her. My boyfriend asked the woman, “Is that your dog?” She replied, “No, she has been here for a week and I have been feeding her.” Their hearts broke as they approached the dog, her skin was raw from the rope rubbing on her neck, she had fleas, looked extremely anxious and had no collar. They took her to a local veterinary clinic, she didn’t have a chip, they gave her a flea bath, her age is about 8 years old, and the veterinarian told them she was a healthy dog. Needless to say, my boyfriend took her to his brother’s home, and everyone voted on the name, Millie. We wish Millie could talk and tell us about her journey. Millie made her first flight ever to NJ and is fitting in nicely with her older beagle sister, Bella. What a story! We all love and adore Millie.

I Remember Dad: THE RED BARN By Richard Mabey Jr.

In early June of 1983, I was just 29 years old. I was working as a proof reader for Oral-B Toothbrushes, for their marketing services pam phlets and booklets. At that time, they were located in Fairfield. I had earned a week’s vacation time. Little did I know, when that week began, that I was about to embark on an adventure that would leave a profoundly positive mark upon the deepest chambers of my heart cen ter. Dad also took a week’s vacation time from his job as a long-distance truck driver. We had big plans to build a small barn, along Mabey Lane, in the backyard of the old Mabey Homestead. Uncle Ed, one of Dad’s older brothers, lived next door to us. Uncle Ed was now re tired and agreed to help us build the barn. Dad and Uncle Ed were both World War II veterans. Uncle Ed served in the U. S. Navy. Dad served in the Seventh Army Air Corps, stationed at Hickam Airfield in Ha

waii. Both men talked very little about their time in service. Uncle Ed’s ship was sunk, by a German war ship, off the coast of England. He was rescued by a British Navy ship. Well, Monday morning Dad drove Uncle Ed and I, in his Ford Ranger pickup truck, to the old Channel Lumber on Route 23. We bought a good amount of two by fours, plywood boards, black roofing shingles, and four large hinges. The three of us loaded the back of Dad’s pickup truck with this extravagant haul of wood, shingles and hinges. The adventure had begun. Why do we remember certain things? As if they are implanted with indel ible ink into the cavernous vaults of our subconscious minds. But for some reason, I remember we stopped for lunch at the Burger King on Route 23. I’m not sure if it was in Wayne or Pequannock. One thing I do remember was that, as we ate our hamburgers and chomped on our French fries, Dad took out a folded piece of notebook paper from his shirt pocket. On this blue-lined paper, were the very plans Dad had drawn in pencil, for the structure of his dream barn. I remember that there was an electrical enthusiasm in Dad’s voice. There was almost a song in Dad’s voice as he showed his brother and I his plans on how he wanted his small barn built. I know how odd this may sound, but it almost seemed that the people in nearby tables, actually stopped talking to one another to hear what Dad was saying. There was no doubt about it,

Dad’s enthusiasm at that Burger King was definitely contagious. I remember we drove halfway down Mabey Lane. Since it was not a busy road, Dad parked over to the side, along the pine trees on our property and we all unloaded the lumber and roofing shingles onto the green grass of our old backyard. I remember this moment like it was yesterday. After we completely un loaded the back of Dad’s Ford Ranger, Dad took a moment and looked at the very spot that he had staked out to be the location where his dream barn would proudly stand. Dad stood there, bigger than life, with his hands on his hips, with a great big smile on his face. “Men, this is where we’re gonna build the barn!” Dad declared with a most glorious enthusiasm in his voice. Something touched me deep inside, the very moment Dad gleefully spoke those words. It was the first time in my life that my father had called me a man. It’s hard to put into words.
