We provide Adult Day Services For Special Needs Adults (21 years old +) National Maritime Day: May 22, 2023 “The United States has always been and will always be a great maritime nation. From our origins as 13 British colonies, through every period of peace and conflict since, the Mer chant Marine has been a pillar in this coun try’s foundation of prosperity and security. They power the world’s largest economy and strengthen our ties with trading partners around the world, all while supporting our military forces by shipping troops and sup plies wherever they need to go.” “In 1933, Congress declared National Mar itime Day to commemorate the American steamship Savannah’s voyage from the United States to England, marking the first success ful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with steam propulsion. During World War II more than 250,000 members of the American Merchant Marine served their country, with more than 6,700 giving their lives, hundreds being de tained as prisoners of war and more than 800 U.S. merchant ships being sunk or damaged.” “Maritime Day is a time-honored tradition that recognizes one of our country’s most im portant industries. Each year, ceremonies and celebrations throughout the country recog nize Maritime Day and the people our mar itime nation depends on.” From the Maritime Administration, U.S. De partment of Transportation. Active Day Adult Services church, we went to Cracker Barrel. Mom had chicken and dumplings. Sadly, they were lukewarm. But Mom did not complain at all. I know that they were incredibly lukewarm, because I also chose them for my lunch. In defense of the waitress that we had that day, it was very busy and the restaurant was quite crowded. When we got home from the restaurant, I took a picture of Mom standing beside the flowers that my sister and I had given her, the day before. Then we played rummy for a few hours. Then Mom got tired and took a nap. My sister and I cooked supper. Mom woke up and we ate supper. After supper, we all watched one of Mom’s favorite movies, “Fried Green Tomatoes.” Then it was time for bed. Mom’s last Mother’s Day had now come to an end. On the surface, it all seemed like a fairly normal Mother’s Day celebration for Mom. But, looking back, I remember seeing a certain sadness in Mom’s eyes. I thought for sure it was because Mother’s Day had fallen on the very day that Dad passed away, back in 2006. But I think there was yet another reason, for the subtle sadness that filled Mom’s eyes. My Mom, Janet Kemmerer Mabey, standing beside the flowers that my sister and I bought for her, on Mother’s Day of 2019.
