Have a Heart?!

Valentine’s Day conjures up images of all types of hearts…candy-shaped hearts, flowers shaped like hearts, and other heart shaped decorations aplenty. It is a day when we celebrate love! But, what about the hearts we love the most…our elderly friends and relatives! As people age, they are increased risk for heart disease, and what many do not know is that heart disease is the number one killer of people over 65. In addition, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Fortunately, aging does not have to automatically mean heart disease or even premature death or disability from it. Therefore, as we approach Valentine’s Day, help a senior friend or family member, learn a few heart healthy tips that will help them lower their risk of heart disease and avoid heart problems in the future. Although we can’t change some risk factors such as family history, sex, or age, there are some key heart disease prevention steps that will reduce their risk. Here are nine heart disease prevention tips that will get them started. 1. Don’t use any type of tobacco and don’t smoke. 2. Exercise at least 30 minutes on most days of the week 3. Eat a healthy diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. 4. Avoid salt and refined sugar. 5. Limit intake of fried foods, packaged snack food, margarine, red meat, full fat dairy products and coconut and palm oils. 6. Maintain a healthy weight. 7. Get enough quality sleep 8. Manage stress 9. Get regular checkups Finally, in this season of love, have a heart and make sure the ones you love stay heart healthy so we can love them and have them with us for a long time to come. Happy Valentine’s Day.
