American Heart Month By YMCA of Western Monmouth County

February is American Heart Month, and as a leading community-based organization committed to improving the nation’s health, the Old Bridge Y urges everyone in the community to get a blood pressure screening. High blood pressure is often referred to as “The Silent Killer” because there are typically no warning signs or symptoms. Killing about one-in-four women, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. About half of Americans (49%) have at least one of these three risk factors. Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including diabetes, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol use. While high blood pressure and heart disease are serious conditions, the good news is that a healthy heart is an achievable goal through lifestyle changes. The Y offers the following tips to help families be heart healthy. 1. Get Physical: Being physically active every day is fun and can improve the function of your heart. 2. Take a Snooze: Lack of sleep can be associated with elevated cholesterol and blood pressure. Adults need at least seven, but no more than nine hours of sleep at night to aid with the prevention of heart disease. Children need 10-12 hours of sleep per night. 3. Shape Up Those Recipes: Makeover your family’s favorite recipes by reducing the amount of salt and saturated fat and substituting a lower fat food without sacrificing tastes. 4. Feeling the Pressure: Revised blood pressure guidelines from American Heart Association mean that nearly half of all Americans (46 percent) have high blood pressure. Lowering or maintaining normal blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Start self-monitoring your blood pressure and know the numbers. Discuss the results with you doctor if needed. Wear red and visit the Freehold Y at 470 East Freehold Road on Friday, February 1, for a Go Red Weigh Hard Workout at 10:30am. For more information about how the Freehold Y can help keep you heart healthy, visit www.ymcanj.org.

Q:

Did you know the change in seasons can affect your mood? Now that the cold, darker, winter weather is upon us, you may be starting to feel different than you did during the summer months. The atmospheric pressure is changing and that can be a contributing factor to you experiencing headaches, sinus congestion, muscle aches and soreness, increased joint pain and stiffness and even trouble sleeping and concentrating. Over the next several months when there is less sun light, there is less vitamin D readily available for our bodies to absorb – this can contribute to a more sluggish feeling during the day and a less restful sleep at night. Chiropractic manipulation can help to keep your nervous and immune systems functioning the best they can, which can make a huge difference, especially during the change of seasons. If you find yourself or anyone you know beginning to suffer as we head into winter, please give me a call! REMEMBER - KEEP YOUR SPINE IN LINE AND YOU’LL BE FINE! Have a Heart?!

Valentine’s Day conjures up images of all types of hearts…candy-shaped hearts, flowers shaped like hearts, and other heart shaped decorations aplenty. It is a day when we celebrate love! But, what about the hearts we love the most…our elderly friends and relatives! As people age, they are increased risk for heart disease, and what many do not know is that heart disease is the number one killer of people over 65. In addition, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Fortunately, aging does not have to automatically mean heart disease or even premature death or disability from it. Therefore, as we approach Valentine’s Day, help a senior friend or family member, learn a few heart healthy tips that will help them lower their risk of heart disease and avoid heart problems in the future. Although we can’t change some risk factors such as family history, sex, or age, there are some key heart disease prevention steps that will reduce their risk. Here are nine heart disease prevention tips that will get them started. 1. Don’t use any type of tobacco and don’t smoke. 2. Exercise at least 30 minutes on most days of the week 3. Eat a healthy diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. 4. Avoid salt and refined sugar. 5. Limit intake of fried foods, packaged snack food, margarine, red meat, full fat dairy products and coconut and palm oils. 6. Maintain a healthy weight. 7. Get enough quality sleep 8. Manage stress 9. Get regular checkups Finally, in this season of love, have a heart and make sure the ones you love stay heart healthy so we can love them and have them with us for a long time to come. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Helping The Family Cope With Winter Allergies By Cassandra Mayall

More than 50 million Americans struggle with allergies every year. Many of these allergies occur in the winter, but are easily mistaken for a cold as the symptoms can be similar, but it’s important to distinguish between the two. Pollen isn't just an issue during spring and summer; in fact some plants pollinate in the winter, but additionally other indoor allergens can be problematic too. Avoiding The Cold Another trigger for winter allergies is the simple fact that people spend more time indoors to keep warm. Air indoors has been found to be two to five times more polluted indoors than outdoors, directly impacting your health. Commonly used cleaning products that contain chemicals add a lot of pollution to the air indoors and can trigger allergy symptoms, such as skin irritation, headaches and a runny nose. Children are more sensitive to chemicals in products, so try to use them when they’re not home or in a different room and open windows to improve the air quality. Even better, switch to natural cleaning products to avoid the issue altogether, which can be bought or made at home. Cedar Fever

It’s inevitable that you’ll spend time outdoors in the winter, where pollen can still get the better of you. Cedar pollen is responsible for a lot of winter allergies, pollinating between December and March. It gives off such large amounts of pollen that the trees look like smoke is coming off them. They mainly grow in South and Central Texas, but high winds in the winter can spread the pollen great distances, affecting many people on its way. Symptoms are similar to hay fever, such as congestion, runny nose and itchy eyes, earning it the name cedar fever. Winter allergies are common, so it’s important to understand if your symptoms are caused by a cold or an allergen. Identifying the trigger means you can avoid it and manage your symptoms, which will make you feel a lot better throughout the colder months.

These body changes and symptoms are commonly associated with decreased estrogen. However, decreased estrogen is not the only cause of vaginal dryness. It is important to stop using soap and powder on the vulva, stop using fabric softeners and anticling products on your underwear, and avoid wearing panty liners and pads. Vaginal moisturizers and lubricants may help. Persistent vaginal dryness and painful intercourse should be evaluated by your healthcare provider. If it is determined to be a symptom of menopause, vaginal dryness can be treated with low-dose vaginal estrogen, or the oral selective estrogen-receptor modulator ospemifene can be used. Men’s Health: Colorectal Cancer Screening Questions for the doctor

If you are 50 to 75 years old, get screened (tested) regularly for colorectal can- cer. You may need to get tested before age 50 or after age 75 if colorectal cancer runs in your family. Cancer of the colon or rectum is also called colorectal cancer. The colon and rectum are parts of the large intestine. There are several kinds of screening tests for colorectal cancer. Before your next doctor visit, it is important to have a list of questions for your doctor. Visiting the doctor can be stressful. It helps to have questions written down ahead of time. You may also want to ask a family member or close friend to go with you to take notes. 8 important questions: • What is my risk for colorectal cancer? • When do you recommend that I start getting tested? • How often do I need to get tested? •

What are the different types of screening tests for colorectal cancer? Which screening test do you recommend? Why? What happens during the screening? How do I prepare? Are there any dangers or side effects of screening?

• • • •

How long will it take to get the results?

ADVICE FOR THE AGING COMMUNITY HEALTH SIGNS TO LOOK FOR WHEN YOUR AGING LOVED ONE IS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY By Sheli Monacchio Sometimes we don’t see our parents as much as we would like. Life gets in the way and our responsibilities pull us in many directions. We speak to mom or dad on the phone and they tell us everything is just fine. But is it? Take note of minor changes you may see while visiting your loved ones. Are they weary while navigating throughout their home or yours? Holding on to furniture and walls? Do they appear more confused with all of the family around and did they eat less than usual? Do they look like they are not physi- cally taking care of themselves the way they used to? It may be time to look into this a little deeper. Difficulties with Activities of Daily Living- (ADLs), such as bathing, changing clothes, housework, or even just getting around. Social Isolation- If your loved one stays at home with little social activity, or spends less time with friends that they used to see on a regular basis. Forgetfulness- Did your loved one forget to do the things they were used to doing daily or did they miss appointments?Remember that if your loved one is suffering from dementia, they cannot control their behavior. Provide a stimulating environment that will allow your loved one to remain safe. When the time comes that you can no longer care for your loved one on your own or if their symptoms become unmanageable, it may be time to reach out to a professional for help at home or take the next steps to find a community ap- propriate for your loved one. Loss of Appetite -Has your loved one been eating? If so, what have they been eating? If they can no longer cook for themselves and/or eat healthy foods, then it may be time to reach out to someone to help. Weight Loss/Looking Frail- This is a sign that their bones may not be as strong as they used to be, and if they fall then the situation could escalate very quick- ly. For instance, have your loved one hold a cup of coffee or tea. Do they have the strength to hold it or is the cup shaking? Neglected Environment- An unorganized, cluttered or messy home can be a sign that they can’t clean anymore, or it might be so cluttered that it can af- fect their own hygiene. Also look for: unopened bills and personal mail, a full voicemail box, an unmade bed, or expired food. If you see any signs listed above while visiting this holiday, it may be time to talk to your loved one about the next steps in their life to help keep them safe. Will they prefer to stay at home as they age, or is assisted living a better option for them? What should I do if my child’s speech or language appears to be delayed?

Talk to your child’s doctor if you have any concerns. Your doctor may refer you to a speech-language pathologist, who is a health professional trained to evaluate and treat people with speech or language disorders. The speech-language pa- thologist will talk to you about your child’s communication and general development. He or she will also use special spoken tests to evaluate your child. A hearing test is often included in the evaluation because a hearing problem can affect speech and language development. Depending on the result of the evaluation, the speech-language pathologist may suggest activities you can do at home to stimulate your child’s development. They might also recommend group or individual therapy or suggest further evaluation by an audiologist (a health care professional trained to identify and measure hearing loss), or a developmental psychologist (a health care professional with special expertise in the psychological development of infants and children).
