GET HEALTHY AT SUMMER CAMP! Summer camps are great places for children to enjoy a range of health benefits, from days of fun physical activity in the great outdoors to an introduction to new, healthy foods. There are also the social benefits of learning how to get along with a new group of peers, and gaining confidence by making new friends and learning new skills. Here’s more about the benefits your child can get away from home this summer! • Camp involves lots of physical activity. Kids spend most of their time during the school year indoors. At camp, they enjoy wonderful opportunities to participate in activities they don’t normally get to do: running, swimming, canoeing, hiking, climbing and more. • Camp promotes social interaction. Children who attend camp are exposed to different types of people, opin- ions and cultures, broadening their experience and helping them learn valuable social skills. They can make friends from places other than their school, widening their circle of friends. • Camp builds self-esteem. Camps offer many opportunities for kids to challenge themselves and develop a sense of independence. As they try new adventures, they gain confidence in their ability to learn new skills and solve problems despite being away from their parents and out of their comfort zone. • Camp encourages healthy eating habits. Because camp is a new setting, many experts believe it is a good way to promote healthy eating habits and nutrition education. Kids are more likely to try new foods and consume more fruits and vegetables in a camp setting than they would at home. • Camp introduces kids to nature. According to a poll by The Nature Conservancy, only about 10 percent of children spend time outdoors every day. In the meantime, they’re growing more attached to life in cyberspace and further detached from the natural world. Camp provides kids the perfect op- portunity to see what they’ve been missing in the great outdoors.
