CAMP & KIDS

Month By Lauren Kolacki

TOGETHER WE CAN END

The month of April is Autism awareness month; a month designated to spreading awareness and educating society about a disorder that now affects 1 in 68 children. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability that commonly influences the way the child communicates and interacts with others; including difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation. Those who are affected, struggle with motor skills and executive functioning that disturbs their ability to reason and plan. Because of their oversensitivity to the environment, if there is too much commotion or noise they become agitated, resulting in hysterics or retreatment. Asperger’s disorder, a less severe form of Autism, is how they classify those who don't experience the same developmental delays. Instead, these children may appear socially awkward. They do not understand the conventional social rules, they tend to lack empathy, and do not grasp the concept of sarcasm. Although there is no known cause or cure for autism, increasing awareness has resulted in an affluence of services and support groups. These resources assist family members with understanding and managing. For the child, the variety of services can improve social, cognitive, and emotional behaviors. The education of the public, enhances the quality of life for all that are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
