One Man’s Journey By Pam Teel

Jose Angeles left everything and everyone he knew to follow his dreams at the age of nineteen. Coming from a poor section of another country, he grew up with no run- ning water and no opportunities for his future. Leaving for another country was a scary thought for him, but he risked it all to follow his dreams. He had no money, he couldn’t speak the language, and all odds were against him, but still he had a vision of how he wanted to live his life. A life that he dreamed of that would be bigger and better than just settling for being poor and helpless. He was young, he had ambition and he had drive, and he made a choice in his life to be successful no matter how long it would take him or what road he would have to travel down to get there. He was willing to work long and hard for the goals he set for himself. When he first came to America, he settled in the Asbury Park area. He didn’t under- stand the language, he had no place to stay, no friends in America, but he was willing to work and willing to learn. It was there that he met a man who would give him his first break. He gave Jose a place to stay while he looked for a way to support himself. Jose started doing construction jobs. During one job, redoing Apartments, he met his first boss, a man who would become a mentor and role model to him. During the next four years he learned many different assets of construction and worked hard learning better English. Because he knew English better than the other workers, his boss gave him more responsibility. After a while though Jose learned that job jump- ing from one to the next wasn’t working out for him. Living paycheck to paycheck, it wasn’t easy to get ahead. Although he learned a lot about construction, he wanted to focus on just one trade and focus on becoming a pro in that trade field. He loved painting and decided that he would learn everything he could about being a professional painter. He started working for a Painting Company in Rahway. His new boss saw his commitment and dedication to his work and quickly made him a leader in the field. Jose was in charge of cleaning up the messes others often made after they finished. He fixed all the mis- takes and made everything look like new. He then moved on to another Painting company in New Egypt where he became a sub contractor. Because of his great work skills, his new boss kept him plenty busy with work. He also helped to sponsor him

on the path to citizenship. Jose had his work permit, then his green card, and then he followed all the steps to become an American Citizen. This is his country now. He’s proud to be an American. This is the land where he got the opportunity to follow his dreams. He credits God for guiding him through his life and for opening doors up for him that wouldn’t have been there if he stayed in Mexico. He believes that the people he met on the way, who helped him through his journey, were put there by the grace of God to give him a chance to have been able to follow his dreams. Jose knows that God is always at his side and always showing him the way. After Jose left the New Egypt company, he decided to start a business of his own. It was scary for him but he never met a challenge he wouldn’t try. Today, Jose is living the American dream with his own company, a family and roof over his head. He’s proud of his hard work ethics and his accomplishments and what it took to get where he is. He doesn’t take anything for granted. Every job he takes on, he and his crew are there to do the best job that they can. Jose believes that in life you can achieve anything as long as you put your mind to it. Jose is definitely a people person. He loves interacting with his clients. He stands by his motto, “We treat your home like it’s our own!” Jose still has more hopes and dreams to accomplish. One day he would like to be a motivational speaker and help others overcome their fears. At thirty years old, Jose started a journey into Martial Arts and at 47 he achieved his 1st degree black belt. He also enjoys singing and would like to do something with that in the future. He also plans on writing a motivational book about his experiences and how it could help others. It’s plain to see that Jose loves what he’s doing. He sets his standards high for every job he does.
