Pets & Antibiotic Resistance Antibiotics save lives, but anytime they are used, they can lead to antibi- otic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is when germs like bacteria and fungi develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. It means the germs are not killed and continue to grow. Antibiotic resistance can affect the health of both people and animals. Resistant germs can spread between people, animals, and the environment. Everyone can help improve antibi- otic prescribing and use. This will help keep us healthy now, fight antibiotic resistance, and ensure that these lifesaving antibiotics will be available for future generations. How pet owners can help use antibiotics responsibly: 1. Ask your veterinarian. • About preventing common infections with good hygiene, nutrition, vaccinations, and proper pet care. • If tests have been done to make sure the right drug is chosen for your pet. 2. Use antibiotics only when needed and follow your veter- inarian’s directions. • Store antibiotics safely in your home, so that children and pets do not ac- cidentally take medicine not meant for them. • Dispose of antibiotics properly, do not flush them. Medicine take-back programs are a good way to safely dispose of most types of unneeded or expired drugs. Experts are working to better understand antibiotic resistance in the environment (e.g., water, soil) and its possible impact on people.

Q: LEADERS IN LEAST INVASIVE PAIN & SPINE PROCEDURES How can Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment Help Shoulder and Knee Pain?
A:
Platelet Rich Plasma erapy also referred to as PRP erapy, is a progressive non-surgical treatment to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, ten- don injuries, and ligament injuries. PRP is part of a group of state-of-the-art treatments collectively referred to as Regenerative Medicine. PRP treats an injured area naturally using your body’s own growth factors to accelerate healing. It has been shown to be safe and e ec- tive for numerous joint and so tissue injuries. It has been extensively researched in numerous medical journals and publications all over the world. Some of the many uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include osteoarthritis (degenera- tive arthritis) of the spine, knee, shoulder, hip, hands, and feet, as well as menis- cus tears, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cu tears. e procedure is simple and is performed in the o ce. e PRP process begins when a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed from the arm and placed into a special container. e blood is then placed into a device called a centri- fuge which spins the blood to help the separate the portion of the blood which becomes concentrated with platelets, thereby giving the procedure its name. ese platelets are important because they release growth factors to recruit stem cells and to assist in healing an injured area naturally. Once the PRP is isolated, it is injected to the injured area under the guidance of an ultrasound machine to help accelerate healing and reduce pain.
is healing works on the simple principle that your body is perfectly capable of healing itself. Your blood contains all the essential components that the body produces to repair tissue damage. Each time you have an injury, the platelets in your blood along with growth factors, stem cells, cytokines, and other elements create a sca olding on the site. e damaged tissues use this framework to regenerate and repair. e entire process takes approximately one hour, and pa- tients are sent home the same day. Patients on average report more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. is may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In a recent study, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery gave patients with early osteoarthritis an injection of PRP and then monitored them for one year. A er one year of the PRP injection, physicians evaluated the knee cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous studies have shown that patients with osteoarthritis can lose roughly ve percent of knee cartilage per year, the Hospital for Special Surgery investigators found that a large majority of patients in their study had no further cartilage loss. At minimum PRP also prevented further knee deterioration.

Interesting People throughout History The True Story of Pocahontas By Pam Teel
Distorted history and Disney managed to turn the true story of Pocahontas it into a fairy tale, but the true story reads more like a tragic tale of a young native girl who was kidnapped, raped, and allegedly murdered by those who were sup- posed to keep her safe. Her given birth name was Matoaka, which means the flower between two streams. Her mother’s name was Poca- hontas. She died giving birth to her daughter. Her father, Wahunsenaca, who later became the Powhatan chief and formidable ruler of more than 30 Algonquian speaking tribes, was so distraught by his wife’s death that he began doting on his new daughter and often called her Pocahontas, after his wife. Wahunsenaca had other wives and children, but Pocahontas became his favorite. According to Mattaponi oral history, Little Matoaka was just about 10 years old when John Smith and the English col- onists arrived in Tsenacomoca in 1607. John Smith was 27 years old. Truth is, they were never married, nor involved. John Smith made up stories of Pocahontas being madly in love with him, but this was not the truth according to oral Powhatan knowledge. The Powhatan children were very closely watched and cared for by the tribe, especially Matoaka because she was the chief ’s daughter. John Smith and the other colonists stayed near the Powhatan tribe, on nearby Jamestown Island, but later ventured out exploring the territory. The native people feared him because he was known to enter villages and put a gun to the head of leaders demanding food and supplies. In the winter of 1607, Smith was captured by the Chief ’s younger brother.
Because the English and Powhatan feared the actions of the Spanish, they formed an alliance. According to oral history and contemporary written ac- counts, Wahunsenaca grew to like Smith, and recognized him as the leader (werowance) of the colonists. He also gave him greater access of land so the colonists could hunt game and catch seafood. According to history, Pocahontas was well known for saving John Smith’s life, but oral history dictates that, that never happened. Years later, Smith alleged that she saved him from being killed by the natives, but since the chief favored him, and bestowed an honor on him, there would be no need to have to save him. Also, children were not allowed to attend any sort of religious ritual similar to a werowance ceremony. History claims that Pocahontas defied her father and brought food to the colonists in Jamestown. Jamestown was 12 miles away and the likelihood that a ten year old would travel alone was inconsistent with Powhatan culture. When they traveled to Jamestown, it was with many tribal members, not one lone girl. They went to show that they were peaceful natives and meant them no harm. By 1609, John Smith’s role as a werowance, leader, of the colonists took an ugly turn. The colonists made inadequate attempts at farming and when sup- plies were low, Smith once again, held a gun to nearby village leaders heads demanding food. Smith claimed that Wahunsenaca wanted to kill him and claimed that Pocahontas came to tell him of the plot, but winter weather and the fact that Pocahontas always had people protecting and watching her, Smith’s claim falls short. Smith’s letters, that were obtained during that time period, never once mentioned the plot to kill him or Pocahontas alerting him of the plot. Why Smith went on to fabricate his made-up stories that she indeed saved him two times in his book, General Historie of Virginia 1624, we’ll never know. The early 1600’s was a terrible time for tribes near Werowocomoco where Pocahontas lived. Native girls soon found themselves being targeted by English colonists. Young children were targets of rapes. The Powhatan people were shocked by the behavior and were horrified that the English government offered them no protection. During that time, Matoaka was around 14. During a ceremony, she chose to be called Pocahontas after her mother. She married a young warrior and soon became pregnant. When she was fifteen or sixteen, it was rumored that colonists wanted to kidnap her. An English colonist, by the name of Samuel Argall, went to her husband’s village. Her husband was not there at the time. They told the chief of that village that if they didn’t give her up, they would kill every- one. Reluctantly the chief gave her up with the promise that it would just be temporary. That was a lie. Pocahontas was forced to leave her child behind. Not much later, her young husband was killed by the Colonists. She was now trapped on an English ship and unaware that her husband was killed. According to a historian of the Mattaponi tribe and the custodian of the sacred oral history of Pocahontas, Dr. Linwood Custalow, soon after being kid- napped, Pocahontas suffered from depression and was growing more withdrawn. Her sister and brother in law were allowed to come aboard the ship to see her. It was there Pocahontas told them that she had been raped. As a result of this, she had a son she named Thomas. Whether or not John Rolfe was the father remains to be known. The colonists pressed Pocahontas to become civilized and dressed her in English clothes, which she hated. They converted her to Christianity and re- named her Rebecca. This is where John Rolfe entered the picture. He married her to create an Alliance with the natives so he could grow tobacco, but curing tobacco was a sacred practice not to be shared by outsiders. After a while, they eventually gave in and showed Rolfe how to cure tobacco and because of this, he became a sensation in England. He also saved the Jamestown colony from going under. The tribes soon suffered great losses of land by greedy colonists taking over and planting tobacco. Continued on page 15...

FOOD & DINING Healthy Snacks for Kids By Stefanie Maglio
Parents know that getting their kids to eat healthy is not an easy task. Children tend to go for the chips and candy, while parents would much rather their children pick a healthier choice such as fruits or vegetables. There are ways for kids to enjoy a snack that their parents are happy with as well. Here are some tasty, yet healthy snacks to try at home: • Celery sticks with cream cheese and raisins (ants on a log) the cream cheese can be substituted with peanut butter • Apple slices with peanut butter • Strawberries dipped in yogurt as a substitute for chocolate • Organic granola bars • Fruit snacks. Be careful when choosing a brand, some consist of mainly sugar and artificial flavoring. • A homemade fruit cup • Raw vegetables (broccoli, baby carrots, grape tomatoes, etc.) with low fat ranch dressing as a dip • Homemade trail mix is also an option, but it is important to be aware of nut allergies. One of these snacks is bound to appeal to your child, making snack time a little less stressful, more fun for the child, and assuring for the parent. Happy snacking!

KIDS Preparing a Sanctuary
Sophia Schindel completed the top award with Girl Scouts, the Gold Award under Mill- stone troop 1098. She created a sanctuary for the Millstone Community Senior Center. It is a tranquil area where seniors can gather to sit and chat with each other and enjoy the outdoors. Sophia cleared an outdoor area and then planted shrubs and flowers to surround the seating benches she had built. Donations were raised and a lot of labor intense hard work was performed. Sophia will attend Rollins College in Florida this fall. She was accepted into the Business Accelerated Master’s Program. She will also be a member of the Rollins Women's Lacrosse Team. Volunteerism is something Sophia is familiar with as she has been involved with Special Olympics NJ since she was 10 years old. Sophia has been able to maintain strong academics as shown through her acceptance into the National and Math Honor Societies in Allentown High School and even the Na- tional Junior Honor Society in Millstone Middle School. Her volunteering did not get in the way of her doing her best in school. Sophia has always wanted to help the Millstone community through Girls Scouts, recre- ation programs and Special Olympics. Sophia felt there was a need to provide the seniors in the Millstone community a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors near the Senior Center. This Girl Scout Gold project was her way to give back a permanent sanctuary space for the Millstone senior community. She can be reached (609) 426-4392, if any further information is needed.

KIDS
The Six Types of Testing and Manipulation Tactics Used by Children By, Surabhi Ashok You have a strict curfew for your kids, and on one weekday, they want to go some- where at a time past that designated curfew. They keep asking you for permission the whole day even after you said no the first time they brought it up. Eventually, you get tired of the constant questions and allow them to bend the rules “just this once”. This is a classic case of testing and manipulation.
Testing and manipulation are tactics utilized by children in order to get what they want from their parents/guardians. Children tend to resort to six different types of these tactics when they don’t want to follow their parents’ rules. The first tactic is badgering. Badgering is exemplified in the scenario from before. Children will try to wear their parents down by repeating certain words and questions until their parents give in. Some won’t stop talking, with phrases like “please”, until they achieve their goal.
Another method is intimidation. Intimidation comes in the form of attacks, both verbal and physical. Younger children may throw temper tantrums if they’re denied something, kicking, banging their heads, and screaming. Older children may swear, yell at their parents, storm away, etc. The third tactic of testing and manipulation is similar to intimidation: threats. Kids may say hurtful things out of anger at a situation. Threats like “I won’t do my homework unless…” or “I’ll run away” are made in the hope that the parent/guardian will lift their restrictions.
The fourth tactic is martyrdom. The goal of this tactic is to make the parents feel guilty. For example, a child may not come down to eat dinner or may put on a tearful look. Parents then forget the discipline they’re enforcing because they don’t want their child to feel that way. The next method of testing and manipulation is butter-up. The child in question, in this case, will compliment the parent and try to make them feel good. In addition, the child may behave abnormally well in order to make it more likely for their parents to agree to what they want. Some adults even come to anticipate this strategy because it’s so commonly used: “You only act like this when you want something.” Finally, there are physical tactics. With this particularly scarier case, the child may attack their parents physically, break items around the house, and more. The physical tactic is usually only seen after multiple occurrences of violent behavior. Badgering, intimidation, threats, and martyrdom are done with the intent of creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. These four tactics of testing and manipulation change the dynamic of the household to give the power to the children rather than the parent. If these methods continue to be used, not only will the children have a lower frustration tolerance but will sustain conflicting emotions within a family. One way to handle testing and manipulation, especially in regards to younger children, is the 1-2-3 Counting Method. The first time your kid uses a testing and manipulation tactic that day, count it as the first warning. If the behavior continues and your kid gets a third warning, encourage a “rest period” to cool down in a room, chair, etc. When the rest period is over, don’t lecture your child and instead carry on with your day. Eventually, limits will be set in place and your child will un- derstand to stop acting out with the first warning itself. KIDS Becoming an Eagle Scout By Pam Teel
Seventeen-year-old, Christopher McCormick, of Upper Freehold, received the highest BSA scouting rank this past summer in an Eagle Court of Hon- or Ceremony that was held on August 24th, at the Allentown Presbyterian Church. Christopher looked forward to the ceremony after completing his project and passing his final review. For his project, Christopher built four wheelchair friendly raised planters that went to Project Freedom in Rob- binsville. Project Freedom is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that develops and operates barrier-free housing to enable individuals with disabilities to live independently. Supportive services such as recreation, training and advoca- cy are offered. Christopher will be a senior this year. He will be attending High Technolo- gy High School in Lincroft, part of the Monmouth County Vo-Tech schools, for math and engineering. Christopher loves baseball. Over the summer, he worked for the Trenton Thunder in their scoreboard and statistics department. He loves Math and science too, and is looking to major in college in either, engineering or sta- tistics. His ideal job would be to work for the N.Y. Yankees, or another Major League Baseball team in their Statistic’s department. Congratulations Christopher for all of your hard work and accomplish- ments!
Interesting People throughout History, The True Story of Pocahontas Continued from page 8... Wahunsenaca did not attend the wedding of his daughter for fear of being captured, but sent her a fine pearl necklace. Through oral history, it was said that she was not allowed to go back to see her family. Pocahontas was brought to England to raise money for the colonists, and was most likely murdered there. She traveled with John Rolfe, her son Thomas, the man who kidnapped her, and several native tribal members, including her sister. Many People in England did not like the atrocities that the colonists bestowed on the villagers. Bringing Pocahontas was an act to show friendship with the native nations and to continue getting financial support for the colonists. Her sister Mattachanna realized that they were all being used, and demanded to go back to her tribe. During her travels in England, Pocahontas confronted John Smith and expressed outrage over the mistreatment of his position as leader of the colonists and his betrayal of the Powhatans. After the colonists finished showing off Pocahontas to the English elites, plans were made to return to Virginia in 1617. According to Mattachanna, Poca- hontas was in good health while on the ship preparing to go home. Shortly after dinner with Rolfe and Argall, she vomited and died. The tribal members ac- cessed that she was poisoned. According to Mattaponi oral history, many of the native people accompanying Pocahontas were sold as servants and carnival attractions. The women, after they were raped, were sent to Bermuda and sold as slaves. Her son Thomas was left in England after her death. Pocahontas’s first born, a girl, was raised by the Patawomeck tribe. She was called Ka-okee. The lineage of Ka-okee includes singer Wayne Newton, a member of the Vir- ginia State recognized Powhatan Patawomeck Tribe. Pocahontas was 20 years old at the time of her death. She was, in essence, a prisoner, after being kidnapped. She was forced to leave her family, her child, forced into Christianity and into dressing and acting a different way, and was most likely coerced into a marriage with John Rolfe in an effort to keep the peace between the colonists and her tribe, though Rolfe most likely married her to gain access to the secret of curing tobacco. Instead of being taken home to her father after her death, Rolfe and Argall took her to Gravesend, England where she was buried at Saint George’s Church. Heartbroken that he had never tried to rescue his daughter, for fear of his tribe being killed, he died of grief less than a year later. History books make out
John Smith and John Rolfe as heroes, but real history and real facts presented by tribal members paint a different story. The only known artist rendering of Pocahontas was done in England in 1616. She was dressed in English clothing.
The True Story of Pocahontas, The Other Side of History, by Mattaponi Tribal Historian, Dr. Linwood “little Bear” Custalow and Angela L. Daniel, “Silver Star” are based on true facts passed on from generation to generation. The book can be found on Amazon. Makes you wonder howmuch more of our history has been rewritten.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Steps You Can Take to Reduce Health Effects from Air Pollution Studies show that air pollution can trigger heart attacks, strokes and worsen heart failure in people who are at risk for these conditions. If you have a heart condition, you could benefit by reducing your exposure to high levels of air pollution. When are air pollution levels high? • Any time of year • When weather is calm • Near busy roads • In urban areas • In industrial areas • When there is smoke Greater risk if you have or have had: • Coronary artery disease • Angina (chest pain) • A heart attack • Bypass surgery or an angioplasty • Heart failure • An internal cardiac defibrillator • A stroke or transient ischemic attack • Blockages in the arteries of the neck or legs When pollution is high, you can reduce the amount of particle pollution you inhale • Know when and where particle pollution levels may be unhealthy. Particle pollution levels can be high at any time of the year. They can be higher near busy roads or industrial areas or during rush hour traffic. When there is smoke in the air from forest fires, burning vegetation or wood stoves, higher levels of particle pollution are present. • Check the Air Quality Index, which provides forecasts of daily air quality. This index provides six color-coded categories that show different levels of health concern for air pollution levels by state or zip code. • Plan activities when and where pollution levels are lower. When particle levels outdoors are unhealthy, delay activity or exercise until the air is cleaner or move the activity indoors. • Change your activity level. When the air is polluted, reduce activity. Go for a walk rather than a jog, for example. • Delay outdoor activity when the air is polluted or exercise indoors. • Reduce overall risk of heart disease or stroke. Make healthy lifestyle changes as described above. • Know the warning signs of heart attack or stroke. If you feel symptoms, even if they go away, stop any activity and seek medical help immediately. Reduce your overall risk of heart disease and stroke • Eat healthy foods • Control blood pressure • Control cholesterol levels • Exercise more (first check with your health care provider) • Stop smoking • Take aspirin and heart medication as directed • Talk to your health care provider about treatment Warning Signs of a Heart Attack • Chest discomfort (uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing, or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back) • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body (pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach) • Shortness of breath • Other signs may include breaking out in cold sweats, nausea, or light-headedness Warning Signs of a Stroke • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body) • Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Problems seeing • Dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, or trouble walking • Severe headache with no known cause
