FALL FUN FOR FAMILIES AND FIDOS AT MARTY’S PLACE HOWL-O-WEEN FAMILY FEST ON OCT. 23 rd Canine Costume Contests, a Leisurely Walk, Hay Rides, Live Music, Games, Activities, Food, Vendors and more will Highlight Festival! Celebrate the joys of autumn—with or without your canine companion—and help raise funds for senior dogs at Marty’s Place’s Howl-o-Ween Family Fest. The dog-friendly festival will be celebrated at Marty’s Place, located at 118 Route 526 in Upper Freehold, on Saturday, October 23 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Rain date is Sunday, October 24.) Highlights will include ca- nine costume contests, a fun leisurely walk, hay rides, pet photo booth, K-9 police dog demonstrations, sanctuary tours, live music from the SunDog Band, vendors, food trucks, basket and 50/50 cash raffles, and other fall-inspired games, challenges and activities for children, adults and canines. “This is our largest fundraiser of the year, and we’re so glad that we can gather again in-person to celebrate our four-legged friends and help raise much-needed funds to help senior dogs,” said Doreen Jakubcak, founder and executive director of Marty’s Place. “Senior dogs are the least likely to be rescued or adopted from shelters and are most at risk of being euth- anized. We want to continue to help as many as older dogs as we can and the proceeds from this event will allow us to save more seniors.” Adults, children and dogs are welcome to dress in costume (if your pooch enjoys dressing up) and participate in a variety of fun costume contests. Prizes will be awarded in several categories including: best and scariest costumes, dog / owner duo costume, and best overall. Admission for the event is $5 for adults; children under six are free. All proceeds will benefit the senior dogs cared for by Marty’s Place. Sponsors supporting Marty’s Place and the event include: Arya Prop- erties LLC, Crossroads Realty, Golden Grange Kennels, Heartland Vet- erinary and Boarding, HomeLight, Sandra M. Iammatteo, Esq., Nancy Karpf, Morgan Engineering LLC, Viacomp Inc., and Pamela White. About Marty’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary: Inspired by a senior dog adoptee named Marty and the plight of other aging canines with nowhere to safely and comfortably live out their “golden” years, Marty’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary was founded in 2015. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization provides a permanent and protected environment for dogs aged seven and older when their owners or other animal rescue/shelters can no longer care for them. While adoption may be an option for some residents, when it isn’t, Marty’s Place provides senior dogs a loving home for life in a cage-free, family-like environment with full, per- sonalized attention given to their needs for the rest of their lives. Situated on 25 acres, the 8,000-square-foot facility in Upper Freehold, N.J., also offers a swim program for its residents and non-resident dogs of all ages in its indoor, saltwater pool. Interesting People throughout History Martha Raye,“Big Mouth” B Pam Teel

Martha Raye was a well-known actress, comedian, impressionist, and vocalist. She was the star of film, television, and stage, and was also one of the bravest performers to have traveled with the USO overseas to help entertain the troops in three different wars. With the outbreak of World War II, she took a break from filmmaking to focus on entertaining servicemen and wom- en traveling with the USO on many tour stops. She soon became even more famous for her dedication to America, its values, and its soldiers, which helped earn her the beloved nickname "Colonel Maggie." Her support of the military began in 1942 with a request to travel to England to entertain the troops. She kept up her morale-boosting tours throughout the Korean War, and had the troops in stitches during Vietnam. Though her Marine Corps and Army ranks, and membership in the Green Berets, were all honorary, she sometimes pulled rank so she could help out with the wounded soldiers. She was a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve Nurse Corps, though never for- merly trained as a registered nurse. She did, however, receive on-the-job training as a Special Forces medic, and at times, she helped out as a surgeon. She spent as much time tending to the wounded as she did entertaining them. Raye also got a flesh wound while visiting the troops in Vietnam. She had it bandaged up and went on with her shows.

Though the performer loved the boys as much as they loved her, she had a special bond with the Special Forces. “Mag- gie … helped everybody she could in Vietnam,” Tom Squier, a retired green beret veteran and a friend of Raye’s stated. “She told jokes and played cards with us, treated our wounds … She was one of us.” Another Vietnam veteran remembers seeing her in 1967 when she brought the whole production of Hello Dolly with her to perform before the troops. Other entertainers went to the big air bases and Navy bases, but they wouldn't go up the rivers and out into the jungle, where she went.'' “How many entertainers in this world would go to a country called Vietnam, where a war was going on, for nine straight years, four months a year, and spend three of those months out with isolated Special Forces detachments in camps all over the country?'' stated Jimmy Dean, executive secretary of the Special Forces Association in Fayetteville. Known as "The Big Mouth" because her mouth seemed too large for her face, and considered the female equivalent to Bob Hope, Martha Raye was an American icon in her own right. She was born Margy Reed in Butte, Montana. Both of her parents were vaudeville performers. She had Irish, German, and English ancestry. Raye made her acting debut, along with her brother Bud, at the age of 3, as they toured the nation with her parents’ variety show "Reed and Hopper." In her late teens, she was hired by band-leader Paul Ash as his lead vocalist, and was spotted by a Hollywood talent scout during a New York City concert in 1934. She soon relocated to Hollywood were she began making a name for herself appearing in a string of successful screwball comedies alongside the likes of Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante, W.C. Fields, and Joe E. Brown. She continued acting into the late 1980s, dividing her time between movies, TV guest spots, and occasional stage appearances. She passed away on Octo- ber 19, 1994 after a long battle from pneumonia. Raye was 78. She requested, several years before, to be buried at Fort Bragg, the home of the Green Berets. The Special Forces Association asked military brass to grant her wish, and they did. Her exemplary service to the Army and the Green Berets earned her a funeral with full military honors.'' Normally, only active duty and retired Army personnel are buried on post. But the Department of Defense granted an exception for Raye. Martha Rayes life was not all smooth sailing. She married seven times, had bouts of depression, and even attempted suicide once after her fifth marriage ended. . She had so little formal schooling that her scripts had to be read to her. She had one daughter named Melodye. Raye had a falling out with her daughter and left her estate to her 7th husband, whom she was with for only a month before her death. She also left money to Peta. She was a big animal advocate. Raye was so beloved by members of the Army Special Forces that President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 made her an honorary lieutenant colonel in the Special Forces. Raye already was a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve Nurse Corps. Raye receivedThe Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1969 for her work with charities and entertaining U.S. troops; her estate gave it to the Friars Club in 1997, where she was its first female honorary member. She also received the Women's International Center (WIC) Living Legacy Award in 1988 She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her support of the Army in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. Raye has two stars on the Hollywood walk of Fame, one for her work in movies, and one for her work in television. Raye was a Spokesperson for Polident denture cleanser in the 1970s and 1980s. Raye's career was highlighted in "The Slapstick Queens" by James Robert Parish, published by A. S. Barnes in 1973. Martha Raye was one of the great humanitarians of her time, risking her life not only entertaining the troops, but out there on the front lines tending to their wounds. Martha was truly an unsung Hero. Thank you for your service!

Q: LEADERS IN LEAST INVASIVE PAIN & SPINE PROCEDURES How can Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment Help Shoulder and Knee Pain?

A:

Platelet Rich Plasma erapy also referred to as PRP erapy, is a progressive non-surgical treatment to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, ten- don injuries, and ligament injuries. PRP is part of a group of state-of-the-art treatments collectively referred to as Regenerative Medicine. PRP treats an injured area naturally using your body’s own growth factors to accelerate healing. It has been shown to be safe and e ec- tive for numerous joint and so tissue injuries. It has been extensively researched in numerous medical journals and publications all over the world. Some of the many uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include osteoarthritis (degenera- tive arthritis) of the spine, knee, shoulder, hip, hands, and feet, as well as menis- cus tears, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cu tears. e procedure is simple and is performed in the o ce. e PRP process begins when a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed from the arm and placed into a special container. e blood is then placed into a device called a centri- fuge which spins the blood to help the separate the portion of the blood which becomes concentrated with platelets, thereby giving the procedure its name. ese platelets are important because they release growth factors to recruit stem cells and to assist in healing an injured area naturally. Once the PRP is isolated, it is injected to the injured area under the guidance of an ultrasound machine to help accelerate healing and reduce pain.

is healing works on the simple principle that your body is perfectly capable of healing itself. Your blood contains all the essential components that the body produces to repair tissue damage. Each time you have an injury, the platelets in your blood along with growth factors, stem cells, cytokines, and other elements create a sca olding on the site. e damaged tissues use this framework to regenerate and repair. e entire process takes approximately one hour, and pa- tients are sent home the same day. Patients on average report more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. is may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In a recent study, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery gave patients with early osteoarthritis an injection of PRP and then monitored them for one year. A er one year of the PRP injection, physicians evaluated the knee cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous studies have shown that patients with osteoarthritis can lose roughly ve percent of knee cartilage per year, the Hospital for Special Surgery investigators found that a large majority of patients in their study had no further cartilage loss. At minimum PRP also prevented further knee deterioration.

Facebook Releases Controversial Smart Glasses with Ray Bans Written By: Nazli Mohideen

In a digital world like today, there is always rising pressure on companies to release the next best thing whether that’s an electric car, updated phone, or wireless product. With more elec- tronics, however, comes safety concerns in regards to the consumer’s internet safety when using such products. People are fleeing left and right from social media platforms, citing se- curity breaches and data monitoring as reasons to leave. On Thursday, September 9, 2021, Facebook officially announced its partnership with the sunglasses company, Ray Bans, in anticipation of their collaborative product, Ray-Ban Stories. Available primarily online and priced at $299 US dollars, the glasses are capable of capturing photos and videos, answering voice calls, and playing music or podcasts. Instead of being on a phone at an event, the slick design of the glasses lets people walk in style and enjoy the present moment, all the while having access to traditional features of a smartphone. The product is widely accessible, too. In addition to being sold online, the glasses can be found in select stores around the United States and in parts of Canada, Ireland, Italy, Austra-

lia, and the UK. The lenses come in about 20 different styles and there are custom options for them to be transition or prescription if necessary. Each pair also comes with a charging case to continue use after the initial battery dies out. There have been user complaints saying the battery life on the product is poor, completely dying after only a couple hours of usage, especially when playing music. A quick solution to this is by using the power switch located on the side of the frames to turn off all of the glasses’ features. Use of the glasses is even more limited since they are not waterproof. Similar to a GoPro, the Ray-Ban Stories presents the perspective of a moment just as how the user experienced it firsthand. The multiple microphones and speakers pick up high-quality audio with minimal background noise. As for recording videos and taking pictures, a user can do this by simply commanding the product to do so as you would with Siri on an Apple product, for example. Holding down the button on the upper corners of the glasses will take a photo and simply pressing the same button will start to record a video up to 30 seconds in length. A little white light on the device indicates that it is currently recording or taking a photo, alerting others when this feature is used in public. However, according to some customers’ experience, the light isn’t clearly visible contrary to what the company has been marketing it to seem. Media from the glasses are automatically transferred to the user's Facebook account for later posting and others to subsequently like, share, comment, etc. All image editing should take place within the Facebook app as well. From there, photos and videos can be sent to other social media apps like Snap- chat and Instagram. This vision is all thanks to Facebook CEO and business mastermind, Mark Zuckerberg, who hopes to introduce another pair of sunglasses in the future that can resemble augmented reality. Zuckerberg claims his product is a direct segway to “when phones are no longer a central part of our lives and you won’t have to choose between interacting with a device or interacting with the world around you.” Rocco Basilico, who helped bring Zuckerberg’s vision to life, says “…Ray Ban [Stories] sits at the intersection of fashion and innovation…” Just days ahead of the product’s release, however, people have already flooded the internet with concerns. “This makes me so uncomfortable and para- noid,” someone says. Others call it “creepy” and another chimed in calling it “ridiculous and laughable.” After all, at any time, someone can take a picture or video of you from far away with this device and you might not ever know. Other companies have come out with similar products, many of which were not successful in sales. Despite Facebook’s and Ray Bans’ respective popu- larity, are people really willing to sacrifice their smartphone and privacy for this new, hands-free experience?? the popularity of sports in high school Written by: Nazli Mohideen

Sports are an undeniable aspect of high school culture. Between the late night practices, hype of let- terman jackets, and inseparable bond among teammates, students often find themselves becoming athletes throughout their high school career. For many, it's their entire identity: working towards making Varsity, earning a scholarship to play their respective sport at the collegiate level, aspiring to become a professional athlete. For others, sports are an opportunity to try something new and meet different people. And for some, it's simply a ticket to escape the craziness that is high school. Whatever the reason, high school-aged student athletes in New Jersey are an increasing trend, particularly in football, track and field, and basketball. But, why? Even though participation in football has actually been on a steady decline over the past couple of years, the sport still pulls in a remarkable amount of athletes per season. Much of football’s popularity is enabled by mainstream media, showcasing Friday Night Lights with the student section packed, and idolizing the status of being either a football player or cheerleader. Travis Key, a former defensive back for the Indianapolis Colts, recalls high school football as being the most authentic. As opposed to college football, which tends to be more business oriented, high

school football is played out of pure love for the game. Most importantly, he notes the idea of “community pride” and having a personal connection with fans. Players may not be the most school-spirited themselves, but they still bring an entire community together. Coaches passionately mentor players and onlookers in the bleachers watch as their friends, classmates, and sometimes, students compete. Athletes take part in an unexpected brotherhood, playing with people in their hometown who they more than likely grew up playing the sport with, too. Above all, football largely reflects American culture, with millions tuning into the sport annually. According to a survey conducted by The National Federation of State High School Associations, only 208 girls and 22,515 boys participated in high school football in 2018-19. The slight decrease from years prior is mainly due to safety concerns. Many players suffer injury during the playing season, such as concussions, drawing them to pull out of the sport. Based on the National Federation of State High School Associations, it was found that football was the most popular sport for boys in New Jersey high schools for the 2018-19 academic year. Yet, the most popular sport for girls during the same time period was track and field. Roughly five years ago, track

and field actually saw the largest increase in its participation count. Some athletes run track and field as a way to stay in shape during the offseason of their main sport, but other runners join since it is typically the easiest sport to start without having any previous sports experience. Jiya Joshi, a Monroe Township High School senior and Junior Varsity cross country athlete, has shared a common experience with many of her other teammates. Growing up, she was never involved in sports, but once high school hit, she alongside plenty of her Asian teammates felt the need to join a sports team based on pressure from family. Joshi mentioned noticing par- ents putting their child in a sport starting at a young age which they then stick with years down the line. Missing out on this initial opportunity and not having what she described as a set of “cultivated skills” with a sport like soccer, for example, her parents put her in track and field. With Jersey’s strong Asian demographic, she suspects others were subjected to a similar path, making the sport so popular. Basketball, finally, is the third most popular high school sport played in New Jersey. This is largely due to vast accessibility to the sport. Outside of a ball and hoop, there isn’t much equipment necessary and nearly every park, no matter how run-down of a neighborhood, almost always has a court to practice on. Skills can be practiced by oneself, but the game is ultimately played with a team. Contrary to football, the sport isn’t as physical and un- like track and field, athletes still take part in a team sport. Basketball is also relatively versatile since it can be played outdoors (weather permitting) or indoors in a gymnasium. Of course, cheerleading and lacrosse are other popular high school sports as well. Surveys also don’t take into account sports played outside of school, other extracurriculars, jobs, etc. High school is all about exploring different opportunities. Seasons come and go, players graduate, and coaches eventually retire, but the association of sports and high school is nothing short of legendary. KIDS

The Millstone Times' STUDENT OF THE MONTH By Pam Teel

re

We provide Adult Day Services For Special Needs Adults (21 years old +)

Eight year old Jackson Graye lives in Millstone Township. He attends the Millstone Elementary School. He loves to go to school and loves his new third grade teacher, Mrs. Marino. He thinks that she is very nice. He also likes seeing his friends at school. His favorite subjects are art and music, but he also likes recess and gym, as well.

If you have a child, friend, sibling, that you would like to see get some recognition for being a great student, I would love to put them in as Student of the Month. You don’t have to get straight A’s. What you need is to show an enthusiasm for learning and a love for your school. Please email me at: crescent671@gmail.com. Each year Jackson picks a Christmas tree from his Grandpa’s Christmas tree farm, and it helps make the house look and smell so beautiful. Jackson loves Christmas Eve and Christmas Day most of all, because he gets to spend time with his family, and he gets lots of presents and good food to eat. His favorite foods to eat are anything with Pasta! He loves pumpkin bread, and pumpkin seeds, and all fruit, especially Peaches, Mangos, Raspberries and Pears. If he had but one wish, he would wish to go back on another Disney Cruise. Jackson is super creative with a great imagination, and he is a great friend to others. His mom is very proud of him. When Jackson grows up, he would like to be an author/ illustrator for graphic novels, and also the lead guitarist in a rock band. Keep up the great work in school Jackson and stay as creative as you are!!!! Jackson is a very good student and always does well in school. He excels at reading! Jackson started writing his own graphic novels earlier this year about ‘Among Us Characters.’ He was inspired by Dav Pilkey, author of the Captain Underpants and Dog Man series, and also Pilkey’s original series called T. Pus, about the character that is half T. Rex and half octopus. Jackson loves music. He loves Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles. His favorite books he loves to read at the moment are anything by Dav Pilkey, and also anything in the I Survived Series, Minecraft Woodsword Chronicles, Timmy Failure Series, the 13 Story Treehouse Series, and the Bad Guys Series. Can you tell that Jackson loves to read! His favorite TV shows are Sponge Bob Squarepants, The Patrick Star Show, and Lego Masters. Jackson’s favorite songs are from the musical Hamilton, and anything by the Beatles. His favorite musicals are by Lin Manuel Miranda- Hamilton, and In the Heights. Last year Jackson designed a t-shirt and sent in to Lin Manuel, and he received the t-shirt back with an autograph- he loves this shirt! His hobbies include playing the guitar and the Keyboard, building Lego’s, reading, and writing and illustrating graphic novels. He loves baseball and basketball, and is a big fan of the Yankees and the 76ers. He also enjoys playing outside, and going for hikes. He builds a lot of LEGO and loves to create on Minecraft. In the summer he goes to Frogbridge. This year was his fifth sum- mer there, and he loves it, especially zip lining and playing GAGA. His favorite places to visit are Disney and South Carolina. Jackson lives in Millstone with his mom, and he has a lot of furry siblings. His grandparents live down the street and they visit often and help out a lot. He is very close with his 95 year old Nanny, and he adores his many cousins. Jackson loves animals, and is a huge help with all of his pets. That includes Cody, a 12 year old chocolate Labradoodle, Sadie, an 11 year old black Labradoodle, and a 4 year old domestic shorthair, tuxedo cat named Cookie. Jackson also helps foster kittens through Lucky Lives Cat Rescue in Allentown, and currently has three kittens staying with them until they find a forever home. Jackson named these kittens, Rosie, Iris and Poppy. Jackson loves the time of year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. He loves eating turkey and Thanksgiving dinner with all his family and cousins, and gets super excited because that’s the night his elf comes. His elf, Donnie, stays until Christmas Day, and visits each morning cre- ating, magic, some mischief and a lot of Christmas spirit. Jackson Graye

REAL ESTATE Shopping for title insurance and other closing services can save you money when purchasing a new home Closing costs can add up to be thousands of dollars, and closing costs estimates can vary widely among lenders. Some of the closing costs are paid to third-party providers, which you can shop for separately. Lenders or real estate agents might recommend providers they have a relationship with, but those providers might not offer the best deal. You can often save money by shopping around for closing services. The specific services that you can shop for vary from lender to lender. Title services are the largest costs in this category, and in most cases you will be able to shop for them. Title services include title insurance, title search, and other costs and services associated with issuing title insurance. In most parts of the country, title services also include the fee for the closing agent who conducts your closing. Identify potential closing service providers. • Your lender is required to give you a list of companies in your area that provide the services you can shop for. You may want to use one of the companies on the list. Or, you may be able to choose companies that are not on the list if your lender agrees to work with your choice. • Ask friends or family in your area which providers they used for various closing services. Some providers may offer more than one type of service. • You can also look for providers online. Contact closing service providers • Ask for a price quote and references from recent customers. • Contact the references. Ask how responsive the company was to their questions and how the company handled problems. Consider whether you want to purchase owner’s title insurance Most lenders require you to buy a lender’s title insurance policy, which protects the amount they lend. You may want to buy an owner’s title insurance policy, which protects your financial investment in the home. Choose your closing service providers and notify your lender. Choose providers that have competitive prices and also a good reputation. Schedule your closing When choosing a date, make sure to consider: • Does your purchase contract specify a particular deadline for closing? • Is there a specific date when you have to vacate your current housing? • When does your rate-lock expire? • Will your lender be able to complete their loan approval process in time for the closing? • Is your closing agent busy with other closings at the same time? There may be more people trying to close near the end of the month. Consider scheduling your closing for the beginning or the middle of the month. • The person handling your closing is often one of the service providers you can shop for. • The person or company who conducts the closing may differ depending on the state in which the closing occurs. • In most of the country, a settlement agent from a title insurance company conducts the closing. • In other states, particularly in the West, the person is known as an escrow agent, and the parties usually sign the documents separately (rather than meeting in person). • Some states, particularly in the Northeast and South, require a closing attorney from each side. • Ask your lender or real estate agent what the situation is in your particular state. Most lenders have service providers that they use if you don’t choose your own Don’t assume that the providers your lender selects have been chosen for low rates or good service. In fact, the default or recommended providers often may be affiliates (related companies) of the lenders, so there may be a financial incentive for the lender to recommend them. Shopping around can save you money. The costs for closing services may feel like a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of the home, but they can add up Research suggests that borrowers who shop around for closing services could save as much as $500 on title services alone. That’s $500 that you can put to- ward new paint, furniture, and other improvements to make your new home feel more your own. State laws may require different title insurance disclosures Depending on the state where you are buying your home, your title insurance company may give you an itemized list of fees at closing. • This itemized list may be required under state law and may be different from what you see on your Loan Estimate or on your Closing Disclosure. That does not mean you are being charged more. • If you add up all the title-related costs your title insurance company gives you, it should match the total of all the title-related costs you see on your Loan Estimate or on your Closing Disclosure. • When comparing costs for title insurance, make sure to compare the bottom line total.
