I Remember Mom: REMEMBERING DISNEY WORLD By Richard Mabey Jr.

In moving to Central Flor ida, my mom thought for sure that we would be vis iting Disney World at least once a month. After all, when we lived in Lincoln Park, we would fly down to Disney World every year. I don’t know what it is. Maybe that it was too close to home. It’s the kind of thing where people from New Jersey very seldom go to see the Statue of Liberty. While people vis iting from Ohio, make it a must-see on their agenda. My mom, my sister Patti and myself, moved to The Villages, Florida in June of 2008. It was the strangest thing in the world, the first two years that we lived in The Villages, we didn’t visit Disney World at all. It wasn’t until the Summer of 2010, when we had friends visit that we ventured out to Dis ney World. It’s hard to ex plain. Mom’s favorite section of Disney World was Main Street. She loved the walk down the street, with all of the colorful, charming stores on both sides. And of course, there was Cinderella’s Castle in the near distance, straight ahead. In 2010, Mom was still able to get around pretty good. She did need a walker, but for the most part she still had the strength and agility to endure walking around Disney World. There was something all

within the fibers and cham bers of Mom’s heart. It was just a very magical moment in time. I think that in the whole time that Mom lived in Cen tral Florida, we only visited Disney World three or four times. Something that, now looking back, I deeply regret because Mom simply enjoyed her magical visits to the en chanted amusement park. I think it all boiled down to the idea that Disney World wasn’t going anywhere. And, after all it was just a stone’s throw away. So, there was a car payment to pay. The electric bill was due. Then, the dread ed car insurance. And on and on it would go. At best, flimsy excuses for not jumping in the car and riding out to Florida’s magical landmark. I am grateful to the hand ful of friends and relatives who came to visit us and would inspire us to visit Dis ney World for the day. Yes, Disney World is a bit pricey. But, bang for buck, the mag ical joy and splendor really is worth the price of the admis sion ticket.

If you’re blessed to have your parents or a parent still with you, on this side of Heaven’s Gate, please do your best to find out that one place where their heart calls to visit. Yes, there are bills to pay, and sometimes it’s hard to find the time. But, it’s worth the time and money to bring those moments of joy to a parent’s heart. Life is painfully short. None of us have a guarantee on seeing tomorrow’s sunrise. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. He can be reached at richardmabey jr@hotmail.com.

so very special about the moment when we would finally reach Cinderel la’s Castle, after having walked the length and breadth of Disney World’s Main Street. Mom’s face would light up like a lighthouse in the middle of the night. Mom would be all so happy to walk through the walkway through the infamous castle. In many ways, a certain childlike joy would awaken

I Remember Mom: MOM’S LAST BATCH OF OATMEAL COOKIES By Richard Mabey Jr.

In early September of 2019, my late mother (Jan et Kemmerer Mabey) asked me to help her bake some oatmeal cookies. I was rath er honored. My mom was an incredible baker. For many years, Mom served as the Bakery Manager at the A&P in Boonton, before she married my father. And, while my dad was stationed at Hickam Air Field, during World Wat II, Mom sent oat meal cookies to Dad, every week. Dad’s brother Earl, lived across the street from the Kemmerer Homestead, with his lovely bride, Eleanor. It was Aunt Eleanor who en couraged Mom to send cook ies to her shy and homesick brother-in-law, stationed in Hawaii. The tie of oatmeal cookies was a connection that Mom and Dad had all throughout their marriage. You see, Mom would bake several batches of oatmeal cookies every week. When she packed Dad’s lunch for work, the night before, Mom would always include three oatmeal cookies in his paper sack. It was a most strange and bewildering thing for me, as Mom and I baked oatmeal cookies, that fateful day in early September of 2019. As Mom was mixing the dough, with her electric mixer, she whispered to me that Dad was going to love these cookies when he came home from work. It was a moment. Just an odd moment. Within a few seconds, Mom looked

up to me as simply said, “I know your dad is in Heaven. I just had a moment.” I told Mom that I under stood. A solemn quiet fell between us. A couple of weeks later, in mid September, Mom had terrible chest pains. My sis ter called the ambulance. Within a very short time, Mom was in the hospital. Sadly, the doctors told us Mom definitely needed to have her Aortic Valve re placed. On the nineteenth of No vember, Mom had surgery and had her Aortic Valve replaced. Sadly, the surgery was not a complete success, and Mom went Home to be with the Lord on the night of the twenty-third of Decem ber. Life is painfully short. This Christmas will mark six years since Mom passed away. I miss her very much. In all so many ways, love is the most powerful force in the universe. Looking back, I wonder if Mom knew her time left upon this earth was short, that fateful day when Mom and I made oatmeal cookies for the very last time. I wonder if she deeply knew that soon she would be with Dad once again. Richard Mabey Jr. is a free lance writer. He has recently had two books published. He currently hosts a YouTube Channel entitled, “Richard Mabey Presents.” Richard may be contacted at rich ardmabeyjr@gmail.com.

Should You Clear Snow & Ice from Your Sidewalk? By John Bazzurro After a recent snowstorm, a family member of mine asked me whether he had an obligation to remove ice and snow from the sidewalk in front of his house. It was his belief that he had no such obligation and that by attempting to remove the ice and snow, he would somehow be “opening himself” up to liability in the event he did it improperly. Accordingly, I decided to write this article with respect to snow removal obligations concerning sidewalks in the State of New Jersey. Since 1981, the obligation of a landowner to remove ice or snow from a public sidewalk differs between commercial landowners and residential landowners. Commercial landowners, which are typically businesses and for profit organizations, have a duty to properly remove ice and snow from public walkways and sidewalks around their buildings in a reasonably timely manner after a snowfall. Further, they have an ongoing and continuing obligation to make sure that those sidewalks and walkways are kept clear from hazards such as ice by continuing to salt and/or sand the area as needed. A commercial landowner which fails to fulfill this duty will be responsible for injuries sustained by any individuals who slip and fall on their property. The duty of a residential landowner is completely different. From a “liability” perspective, a residential landowner has no duty to remove ice or snow from the public sidewalk next to its property. That is, if an individual slips and falls as a result of an accumulation of ice or snow on a public sidewalk next to a residential property, that injured individual cannot obtain monetary damages from the homeowner for negligence. However, does this analysis change if the property owner attempts to remove the ice or snow but does so in an improper or negligent manner? The answer to this question is: “it depends.” A recent New Jersey Supreme Court case held that the landowner in this instance would not be responsible to an injured person unless the landowner’s attempt to remove the ice and snow formed a “new element of danger… other than one caused by natural forces.” Under this language, a subsequent melting and refreezing of that snow on the sidewalk would not constitute such a new hazard. The reasoning of the court in reaching these conclusions is to encourage homeowners to engage in the snow removal process for the safety of the public. Importantly, however, despite the fact that a homeowner may not be liable for damages suffered by someone who slips and falls on the public sidewalk in front of their house, they may be fined by their local municipality for failing to clear ice and snow in conformance with local ordinances. Accordingly, in order to avoid a potential fine from your local town, it is suggested that all attempts be made to remove the ice and snow from the public sidewalk in front of your house. As indicated above, doing so does not necessarily increase any liability you may have to a passerby who falls. Despite my analysis above, there are numerous questions and issues that are still not answered. If a homeowner is not responsible for injuries to one who slips and falls on the public sidewalk, who is? Is a multi-unit apartment building “residential” or “commercial?” Is a public sidewalk next to a residential condominium complex “residential” or “commercial?” Is a common sidewalk with in a residential condominium complex “residential” or “commercial?” The answers to these questions require significantly more legal analysis than can be provided in this article. As such, in the event you or a family member are injured as a result of a slip and fall on ice or snow, you should immediately seek the advice of an attorney to determine who may have responsibility for your injuries. If you or a family member have any questions concerning any issues raised in this article, please do not hesitate to contact my office. JOHN T. Can I Protect My Child from Developing Swimmer’s Ear? By Brianna Siciliano

The weather is heating up, the sun is shining, and the bathing suits are out. Swimming season is here! Unfortunately, there can be a downside to swim ming: ear infections. It is common for children who spend a lot of time in the water to develop swimmer’s ear (medically known as otitis external), in which water sits in the ear canal and leads to irritation––and infection––of the child’s outer ear. The difference between swimmer’s ear and middle ear infections (medically known as otitis media) is that middle ear infections occur behind the eardrum, happening when bacteria and fluids from the child’s nose and throat collect there. This happens after a child has a cold or flu during the win ter. To summarize, middle ear infections occur in the winter because of a cold or flu, while swimmer’s ear infections occur after water block up in the ears while swimming. There are ways to prevent outer ear infections, including: - having your child tip head to the side and let the water drain out of ear once above water - having your child wear removable earplugs to keep ears dry - having your daughter wear a bathing cap that cover ears and hair Do NOT clean your child’s ears with cotton swabs, or put any other objects like bobby pins in your child’s ears, if your child has swimmer’s ear. Doing this can scratch the skin of the ears and allow bacterias or fungus to enter the ear. Ear wax is good for ears, often protecting ears from developing swimmer’s ear. If you suspect your child has developed swimmer’s ear, have a doctor examine your child to confirm the diagnosis. Once diagnosed, your child will be most likely be prescribed antibiotic ear-drops for treatment. Keep your child out of the water until the infection has cleared (which usually takes around four to seven days).

QUESTION: What is Optomap retinal imaging?

ANSWER:

The optomap ultra-widefield retinal image is a unique technology that captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image while traditional imaging methods typically only show 15% of your retina at one time. Your retina (located in the back of your eye) is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly. This means that in addition to eye conditions, signs of other diseases (for example, stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes) can also be seen in the retina. Early detection of life-threatening diseases like cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. It also facilitates early protection from vision impairment or blindness. Early signs of these conditions can show on your retina long before you notice any changes to your vision or feel pain. While eye exams include a look at the front of the eye to evaluate health and prescription changes, a thorough screening of the

FIGHTING FIRES WITH SUPERCOMPUTERS By Vincent Tedjasaputra, PhD

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Tim Werle cranked the temperature up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, tuned the Santa Ana winds to swirl hard from the northeast, and dropped the humidity down to a bone-dry 5%. He care fully picked his target; a mostly uninhabited grasslands preserve just outside San Diego. With a click of his laptop’s mouse, he dropped a match into conditions perfect for a disaster. His eyes widened as the brushfire burst angrily across 1,500 acres in just two hours. Looking across the WIFIRE Firemap, a satellite image map overlaid with terrain and access roads, Werle could instantly strategize exactly where to send his crew to get ahead of this fast-moving, simulated blaze, to practice for the real thing. The WIFIRE Firemap is a real-time interface that simu lates and projects how quickly a real wildfire might spread and can even make projections on how many structures or people might be affected. It currently shows the location and status of every active wildfire in the U.S., and such advanced computer-based tools are now just as essential as a firehose in the current era of fighting wildfires. When a fire is reported, emergency dispatchers input live data into WIFIRE, such as location, temperature, and wind speed and direction. This technology gathers all of the information in one place and enables firefighters such as Werle to better target the deployment of fire trucks, planes or digging crews. From the resulting data, dispatch ers relay the information within minutes to teams on the ground and in the air. In a firefight, every second matters, and quick response saves lives and homes. The ‘crystal-ball’ capability of WIFIRE to crunch all the relevant information in real time is far from magic. This technology, funded by the U.S. National Science Founda tion, is made possible by a cyber-infrastructure that con nects real-time weather information, infrared images from fire planes, satellite maps of terrain and brush, and other

science and old-school firefighter experience, says Werle. The WIFIRE team is led by Ilkay Altintas, an NSF-funded computer scientist at the University of California, San Di ego, who uses her expertise in workflow to connect data science with fire science in collaboration with the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Altintas says that the nuts and bolts of the technology behind WIFIRE is the inter connectedness of the inputs. In fact, another NSF-funded project, HPWREN, was the tinder for WIFIRE. It provid ed inputs for predicting and spotting fires by connecting the existing network of cameras and weather stations scat tered throughout San Diego County. At a training test session, Capt. Brian Wall reviews the downlinking capability of command vehicles and capability of field commanders to see live modeling.

Battalion Chief Thomas Gikas (left) and Capt. Timothy Werle (right) using the WIFIRE Firemap to predict the path of an active wildfire. Photo Credit: Ilkay Altintas

Altintas says this technology would not be possible without funding from the National Science Foundation. Her team’s work is more relevant than ever as devastating wildfires are occurring more frequently and more intense ly because of drastic changes to the climate, and more homes are being built near wooded or grassy areas away from cities. Together with local firefighters, the WIFIRE project combines modern technology with years of firefighting know-how to shape the future of emer gency wildfire response. Vincent Tedjasaputra, PhD is an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fel low at NSF in the Office of the Director, Office of Legislative and Public Affairs. He is a science communicator and public speaking coach. Prior to coming to NSF, Dr. Tedjasaputra studied healthy aging of the lung in his Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He is a former collegiate track athlete-turned exercise physiologist, earning his Ph.D. in Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta, in Edmon ton, Canada, where he studied the pulmonary vascular response to exercise in health and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). DO YOU NEED A LAWYER IN MUNICIPAL COURT? BY JOHN BAZZURRO As indicated on our website, there are numerous charges that are heard in the Municipal Courts in the State of New Jersey. These range from low level motor vehicle violations such as going through a stop sign, careless driving, failure to maintain your lane and other charges that generally carry very low fines and two or less motor vehicle points. If you have been charged with any motor vehicle violation that carries more than two motor vehicle points upon a conviction, we suggest that you obtain the advice of counsel before going to court. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with some information as to whether or not they need legal representation in Municipal Court on a low-level motor vehicle violation that carries two or less motor vehicle points. As most citizens of New Jersey know, municipal prosecutors will, generally, as a matter of course offer a “no point” or “zero point” violation as part of a plea bargain if you are charged with one of these low-level motor vehicle violations. The monetary cost of these “no point” or “zero point” violations are rather excessive in that you are required to pay a $250.00 surcharge for this “privilege.” The statute which provides this “no point” plea is called the unsafe driving statute. The basic theory in accepting a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain is to potentially avoid motor vehicle points on your license in order to keep your auto insurance premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. However, it should be pointed out that there are a number of situations in which your acceptance of such a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain may adversely affect your rights without your knowledge. One such situation is where you have already previously pled guilty to unsafe driving on more than one occasion. Your third guilty plea to unsafe driving within a certain period of time will subject you to four motor vehicle points when you may be under the mistaken belief that you will not be receiving any motor vehicle points. Another such situation where you potentially will need legal representation is where the low-level motor vehicle violation is the result of a motor vehicle accident. The bottom line is that, regardless of what type of motor vehicle violation you are charged with, you should seek the advice of an attorney before appearing in Municipal Court by yourself and entering into a plea bargain which may subject you to other legal ramifications of which you were not aware. Typically, when we receive a call for a motor vehicle violation, we initially attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the potential client to determine whether or not they will require legal representation given their individual circumstances. Accordingly, please feel free to contact us to discuss your individual situation to determine whether or not legal representation is required. •LICENSED AND BONDED APPRAISERS • TOP CASH PAID For Estate Jewelry & Watches and Coins • FREE Evaluation! May is the ideal time to get outside, be active, and enjoy nice weather. Warm weather motivates people to get moving. The sunny days entice kids to venture outdoors for free play, sports, and a healthy dose of physical activity. While it’s great to see our youth outside and active when the weather is nice, they need physical educa tion and activity year-round. Studies have shown that active kids do better! When children are active, they perform better academically, have better attendance, and behavior improves. MILLSTONE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY HOSTS GEORGE WASHINGTON ENCAMPMENT TO CELEBRATE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Millstone Township, New Jersey, March 13, 2026 – Millstone Township will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution by hosting the George Washington Encampment on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The encampment will be held at the Baird Farmstead located at 24 Baird Road in Millstone Township. The event is free and open to the pub lic. Like many places in New Jersey, Millstone Township was caught up in the war that raged across the colonies, and many residents joined the patriot cause. One of the key events in the town ship took place in June 1778, when the British Army marched across New Jersey on the way to New York. Under the leadership of General Hen ry Clinton, their weary army, harassed by Ameri can sharpshooters and worn down by hot humid weather, trudged through present-day Millstone Township, where they camped along Stagecoach Road. The next evening, pursuing American forc es led by the Marquis de Lafayette and Alexander Hamilton camped at the same location. Two days later the armies met at the Battle of Monmouth. Millstone Township and the Friends of Millstone Township Historic Registered Properties are cel ebrating our community’s and region’s rich Revo lutionary War history by hosting this event. Professional reenactors at the encampment will portray the 1st New Jersey Regiment, George and Martha Washington, and Hannah Archer Till, George Washington’s enslaved cook who accom panied Washington on his military campaigns for over six years. Attendees will have the opportu nity to listen to 18th-century music, participate in musket drills, visit a field hospital and learn about how a colonial army on the move managed its cooking, laundry and food rations. Live farm ani mals will be available to “meet and greet,” helping us to tell the story of the livestock that traveled with the army. The event is family friendly with activities for people of all ages. Free parking will be available across from the Baird Homestead at the Millstone Township Middle School. Food and drink will be available for purchase from food trucks. For more details, please visit savinghistorywithfriends.org. Fund ing for this event is made possible by the New Jer sey Historic Trust and Millstone Township.

ORGANIZING BEFORE THE BABY By Stefanie Maglio

Adding on to the family can be a really exciting time. However, as much joy as the new child will bring, he or she will bring along stress as well. Soon to-be parents have to take care of many things before the baby is even born. It can be difficult to try and keep track of it all. Here are some things to do before the arrival of your newborn: Pick a birth announcement! This is one of the less stressful things that you may consider doing before the baby is born. Be creative with how you choose to announce the arrival of your little one to your friends and family.

longings together in a bag as you rush out the door. Take the time to plan out what you may need for your time in the hospital. Pick a pediatrician. It’s important to find a pediatrician that you trust with your baby and that you can afford to get care from. This may not seem like something to worry about right away, but once the baby is born they will need lots of medical attention and vaccinations in most cases. Wash Clothing. Clothing that you or your family purchased for the baby should be pre-washed. This way the clothing can be worn immediately, and you won’t have to be worried about doing the laundry before dressing your newborn. Make freezer meals. This one is for the parents. Once the baby arrives, there will be little to no time for yourselves. Having meals already prepared for dinner will be a big help so you don’t have to cook. Often friends or fam ily will contribute and bring food as well. Install a baby car seat ahead of time. When the day comes that you are leaving the hospital with your baby, you will be tired and in a rush to get home. Setting up the car seat ahead of time will save you time and stress. Get waterproof mattress pads for the baby’s crib. Accidents are bound to happen. Purchase some in-between clothing. As you begin to lose the baby weight, but you are not yet back to your normal weight range, you will be in an in-between stage. It’s best to have comfortable clothing during this time.

Make a list of addresses of the people you’d like to send your birth announcement to . If you are having some kind of celebration, you’ll need the addresses for invitations. Either way, having the addresses ahead of time will save you from unnecessary stress and effort. You’ll have plenty of other things to worry about getting done. Get a waterproof bed pad. Make sure you purchase this before you begin to near your due date. If your water breaks in the middle of the night, you won’t have to worry about amniotic fluids ruining your mattress as you hurry off to the hospital. Have your hospital bag packed. Again, this is something that can wait a bit, but make sure it is pre pared well before the baby comes. When the time comes, you won’t want to worry about throwing a bunch of be
