DO YOU NEED A LAWYER IN MUNICIPAL COURT? BY JOHN BAZZURRO As indicated on our website, there are numerous charges that are heard in the Municipal Courts in the State of New Jersey. These range from low level motor vehicle violations such as going through a stop sign, careless driving, failure to maintain your lane and other charges that generally carry very low fines and two or less motor vehicle points. If you have been charged with any motor vehicle violation that carries more than two motor vehicle points upon a conviction, we suggest that you obtain the advice of counsel before going to court. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with some information as to whether or not they need legal representation in Municipal Court on a low-level motor vehicle violation that carries two or less motor vehicle points. As most citizens of New Jersey know, municipal prosecutors will, generally, as a matter of course offer a “no point” or “zero point” violation as part of a plea bargain if you are charged with one of these low-level motor vehicle violations. The monetary cost of these “no point” or “zero point” violations are rather excessive in that you are required to pay a $250.00 surcharge for this “privilege.” The statute which provides this “no point” plea is called the unsafe driving statute. The basic theory in accepting a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain is to potentially avoid motor vehicle points on your license in order to keep your auto insurance premiums lower and, potentially, to avoid the suspension of your driving privileges where you are in danger of accumulating 12 motor vehicle points which will result in a temporary suspension of driving privileges. However, it should be pointed out that there are a number of situations in which your acceptance of such a “no point” or “zero point” plea bargain may adversely affect your rights without your knowledge. One such situation is where you have already previously pled guilty to unsafe driving on more than one occasion. Your third guilty plea to unsafe driving within a certain period of time will subject you to four motor vehicle points when you may be under the mistaken belief that you will not be receiving any motor vehicle points. Another such situation where you potentially will need legal representation is where the low-level motor vehicle violation is the result of a motor vehicle accident. The bottom line is that, regardless of what type of motor vehicle violation you are charged with, you should seek the advice of an attorney before appearing in Municipal Court by yourself and entering into a plea bargain which may subject you to other legal ramifications of which you were not aware. Typically, when we receive a call for a motor vehicle violation, we initially attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the potential client to determine whether or not they will require legal representation given their individual circumstances. Accordingly, please feel free to contact us to discuss your individual situation to determine whether or not legal representation is required.

a gift of love
TO ALL THE YOUNG MEN, COMING OF AGE By Richard Mabey Jr.
This is a most sincere and earnest letter to all the young men out there, coming of age, mainly between those awkward years between being 17 to 21 years old. It is not meant to be chauvinist at all. But rather some kind and heart felt words from a 72 year old man, who now wishes some one had given him this advice of coming of age, back when he was 17. To all the young men, coming of age, I know your pain. I know your struggles. I know the feeling of being pulled in a 101 directions, while still trying to remain true to your own calling, your own purpose, your own dreams. In early September of 1970, I turned 17 and began my senior year at Boonton High School. I was a most sincere and dedicated student. I was the solid B student. I would get A’s in English and History classes, and C’s in Chemistry. I was head over heels in love with my girlfriend, Pen ny. I don’t think a boy could love a girl, more than I loved dear, sweet, kind Penny. Penny’s Daddy was a plumber; he owned his own plumbing business. Mr. L. had two daugh ters. God had not given him a son. And, in many ways, I think he looked to me as being his adopt ed son. Mr. L. wanted me to take up the plumb
Camp Allamuchy tried to convince me to pur sue a career as a Camp Ranger. My dear, beloved Mom would tell me that I would make a great doctor. My dear, sweet girlfriend would often tell me I should consider working for her Dad dy. There were times, in my senior year of high school, when my head would spin with all so many people, trying to pull me in all so many directions. To all the young men out there, coming of age, I just cannot stress it enough, to thine own self be true. Through all the people trying to lasso me into following careers, that they thought would be best for me, one man knew me better than I knew myself. And that man was my be loved father. I started writing for the Lincoln Park Herald when I was 12 years old. It was a little, small town weekly newspaper. I wrote scout news, youth group happenings and about little events in my neighborhood. My father would often tell me that I had a gift for writing. That I should guard that gift. That my talent for writing, was a gift from God. But something traumatic happened in my se nior year of high school. My English Teacher as
A photo of my Dad and I, at the dining room table of the old Mabey Homestead, back in the Fall of 1970. I’d give up everything I own to just be able to talk to dear old Dad, for just five minutes again. To really thank him for believing in me, more than I believed in myself.
ing trade, to be his journeyman, to work for him. But plumbing just didn’t click for me. And, it created a subtle friction between Mr. L. and myself. To all the young men out there, people will try to pull your heart and mind, in a certain direction. But you must always listen to your own heart, go out into the world to fulfill your dreams. And, without being crude or rude, stand your ground when people try to pull you into their dreams of what you should be. In my senior year of high school, I was very active in my church, the First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park. I faithfully attended Sunday School, Youth Group and Church Services. My kind minister, Reverend Duitsman wanted me to study to become a minister. I prayed and prayed and prayed about it, but I knew deep in my heart, that God was calling me to a different path. It was in the dawn of early September of 1970, that I began reading a book by the late great Thomas Wolfe, entitled, “Look Homeward, Angel.” I was in awe of Mr. Wolfe’s writing. His book touched my heart and strengthened my own calling from God, to put words down on paper, to move the human heart with words. Yet, it was to be a rough and winding road for me to find the courage to step out and define myself as a writer. You see, I was listening to other people, to whom I greatly respected and admired. They were well meaning in trying to pull me in a certain direction, to pursue a vocation that they thought would be best for me. I allowed their opinions to dampen the inner voice from God, calling me to be a writer. My high school Guidance Counselor was guiding me to become a teacher. I was active in scouts and loved the great outdoors. The Camp Ranger at
signed us to write about a person who had a profound effect upon our lives. I wrote a story about my late, paternal grandfather, Watson Mabey. I poured my heart out in writing that story. I must have done a dozen rewrites of that story. I thought for sure, I was going to get an A+ on that story. I was devastated when the English Teacher handed me back my compo sition, with the grade of C- on it. To top it off, she wrote on the first page of my essay these words, “sloppy emotionalism.” I was crushed. After school let out for the day, waiting for the school bus, I found a quiet place, a nook to be alone in the school and cried my eyes out. I told myself that I didn’t have the right stuff to be a writer. To all the young men, coming of age, please do not ever allow anyone to dowse the flames of your dreams that burn brightly in your heart. My father told me to ignore my English Teacher’s tough grade of C-. My father reminded me that I had a gift from God, to be able to put words down on paper. To all the young men, coming of age, never ever surrender your dreams to someone else’s cruel words. Never surrender. Never give up the ship. Fight for your dreams. Hold steady to your dreams. Guard your calling from God. I cannot stress it enough, never give up! If you hit a thousand road blocks, if you fall down a hundred times, in pursuing your dreams, just stand up, proud and tall and march on toward fulfilling your dreams. Never surren der! Never give up! Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. He has recently had two books pub lished. He currently hosts a YouTube Channel entitled, “Richard Mabey Pres ents.” Richard may be contacted at richardmabeyjr@gmail.com.

VACCINES FOR YOUR PET
TYPES OF VACCINES There are certain vaccines that most states require by law. For instance, almost all states require a mandatory rabies vaccine. Some require the vac cine to be administered annually, while some require it every three years. Consult with your vet to determine the requirements of your state’s law. A case of parvovirus can be deadly for a new puppy. It is recommended to begin your puppy on the anti-parvovirus vaccine between six and eight weeks of age. Other common vaccines for dogs include distemper and ca nine hepatitis. Cats also are commonly given rabies shots as well as feline leukemia vaccines. RISKS OF VACCINATING Giving your pet a vaccination will mildly stimulate its immune system. This may make your pet become a bit sluggish or even cause a slight fever. This is normal, but you can relieve any worry by scheduling a visit with your vet. The ASPCA states that in most cases, the risks of side effects are much smaller than the risk of the actual disease. Be upfront and clear with your vet about your pet’s medical history before beginning vaccinations.
Just like humans, pets are able to receive vaccines to prevent illness. Vac cines have been considered as one of the most effective ways to keep your pet in peak health. Talk to your veterinarian to determine which vaccines will be the most beneficial to your pet. Vaccines are used to prepare your pet’s immune system to fight incoming diseases. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reports that these vaccines use an antigen to trick your pet’s immune sys tem into believing a disease is present. An antigen is a toxin that creates a response from an immune system without causing an actual disease. This prepares your pet’s body to recognize and fight off an actual attack of this simulated disease. WHEN TO VACCINATE You will need to talk to your pet’s primary veterinarian to determine the best time to vaccinate. There are different variables that will determine the frequency. These variables include the type of vaccine, your pet’s age, medi cal history and its lifestyle. Puppies and kittens receive most of the antibodies they need to fight off disease from their mother’s milk. This means once your pet has been weaned from nursing, it is time to consult a vet and begin vaccines to replace the an tibodies they are no longer receiving.

Here is what you need to know: IN THE UNITED STATES • After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. • More than 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer, and more than 60,000 new cases of breast carcinoma in situ (cancer that has not invaded nearby breast tissue) were diagnosed in 2015. • More than 40,000 women in the United States will die each year from breast cancer. • 440 men will die each year from breast cancer. • There are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. This includes people who are still being treated and those who have completed treatment. QUESTION: What is Optomap retinal imaging?
ANSWER:
The optomap ultra-widefield retinal image is a unique technology that captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image while traditional imaging methods typically only show 15% of your retina at one time. Your retina (located in the back of your eye) is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly. This means that in addition to eye conditions, signs of other diseases (for example, stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes) can also be seen in the retina. My dad named her Foxy, because she looked so very much like a little fox. I was amazed at just how very intelligent Foxy was. She quickly adopted to life in the old Mabey Homestead. And, she got along so well with our two orange-striped cats, Felix and Oscar. One of Foxy’s favorite things to do was to run around in Earl’s Meadow, which was a big open field along Mabey Lane that was a little more than an acre in size. My grandfather, Watson Mabey, named the back field Earl’s Meadow in honor of his brother Earl who was killed in action in World War I. At the time, there were still some woods to the east of Earl’s Meadow. Foxy and I would walk the forest path. Foxy was a disciplined dog and would always come to me when I called her, so I felt assured to let her walk the wooded path, without a lead. There was a stream that ran through the forest, along the path we would walk. Foxy loved to walk up to the banks of this babbling brook and splash her paws in the water. This was especially the case, when summertime came. The splashing water was a cool relief from the hot sun’s golden rays. Foxy went to Rainbow Bridge in March of 2015. I cried my eyes out when she passed away. She was an incredibly loyal dog, with a very sensitive and loving heart. If I may take the liberty of sharing these words with you, my friends, it would be this. If you are looking for a dog, to bring joy into your life, please do consider adopting a rescue dog. DO YOU HAVE UMBRELLA COVERAGE ? By John Bazzurro Over the past several weeks, I have had two unfortunate situations that have arose in my prac tice that have prompted me to write this article concerning something called “umbrella coverage.” Despite its name, this type of insurance coverage has nothing to do with protection from weather events. As will be seen below, “umbrella coverage” is another layer of insurance coverage that is rec ommended in order to properly protect you and your family against judgments and lawsuits arising out of your negligence or the negligence of a family member within your household. In one case, my client was significantly injured in a motor vehicle accident with a 17-year-old boy who had only recently received his drivers’ license. The automobile insurance policy on the young man’s vehicle had policy limits of $250,000.00 for the benefit of parties injured as a result of the negligent operation of the vehicle. The young man and his family live in a large home in an upper class Township within Monmouth County and, as such, it would seem that he and his family would have a reason to protect their assets over and above the $250,000.00 policy limits of their automo bile insurance. Unfortunately, they did not have additional insurance coverage and, as such, given the significant nature of my client’s injuries, their personal assets could now be in jeopardy in the litigation. In another case, a client of mine caused a significant accident in which a number of people were injured. Although I only represented her on the traffic tickets she received, both her and her hus band inquired as to whether or not it was likely that they were going to be sued for personal injuries arising out of the accident. Similar to the family above, my client and her husband only had automo bile insurance with $300,000.00 in policy limits to cover the injuries sustained by the other individ uals involved in the accident. The client’s husband was a medical professional and, once again, had significant assets over and above the $300,000.00 policy limits which he and his wife should have protected. When I asked them if they had “umbrella coverage” to further protect them, they did not know what it was. At a minimum, if you own a home and an automobile, you should have an automobile insurance policy that protects you against injuries you cause in a motor vehicle accident as well as homeowners’ insurance which protects you against injuries caused by you and your resident family members for negligent acts (other than an automobile accident) that cause injuries to others. All homeowners’ insurance policies contain an “automobile exclusion” for which the homeowners’ policy will not cover injuries to others as result of the operation of an automobile. If either of these policy limits are insufficient to “pay for” the injured parties’ injuries, “umbrella coverage” is intended to supplement your policy limits. Typically, “umbrella coverage” is purchased to supplement the above referenced automobile insurance policy limits and homeowners’ coverage policy limits; often at a reasonable rate. Such “umbrella coverage” is utilized and necessary to protect assets when your assets are greater than the policy limits afforded by either your homeowners’ policy or motor vehicle policy. Unlike homeown ers’ coverage, “umbrella coverage” does not contain an “automobile exclusion” and, as such, would be available to supplement automobile insurance coverage in the two scenarios described above. Accordingly, while it is a good idea to review your insurance coverages on a regular basis with a qualified insurance agent or broker, you should always be cognizant of the amount of your automo bile coverage and homeowners’ coverage in relation to the amount of assets you intend to protect. Importantly, regardless of the amount of assets you presently have, a judgment against you arising out of your negligent acts may last for 20 years or more and, therefore, assets which you accrue in the future may also be in jeopardy. So, regardless of the level of your present assets, it may be a good idea to protect your future with such “umbrella coverage.” Should you have any questions concerning this article, please feel free to contact my office or, alternatively, immediately discuss these issues with a qualified insurance agent or broker.
