Rep. Smith’s Bill to Combat Anti-Semitism Becomes Law Building on an amendment he wrote in 2004 to create a Special Envoy to combat anti-Semitism, last month Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) successfully pushed enactment of his Special Envoy to Monitor and Com- bat Anti-Semitism Act that expands the authority of the office and elevates the Envoy to that of Ambassa- dor-at-Large, granting the position added clout to fight the rise in worldwide anti-Semitism.

“My new law will raise the Special Envoy to the rank of Ambassador-at-large, a high-level position that will allow the Special Envoy to report directly to the Secretary of State,” Rep. Smith said. “The official rank of Ambassador comes with greater seniority and diplomatic access not only here in Washington, but equally important, overseas in dealing with foreign governments. In short, it gives the Special Envoy the clout required do the job more effectively.”

“Anti-Semitism is on the rise in many countries around the globe over the past 10 years. We’ve seen members of the Jewish community harassed, intimidated, assaulted and even killed. We’ve seen sacred places like synagogues and graves desecrated. We’ve heard the use of anti-Semitic slurs and threats, and the open targeting of the State of Israel with what the great Soviet refusenik and former religious prisoner Natan Sharansky told me are the ‘three Ds’– de- monization, double-standards and de-legitimization of Israel. “With the rise of on-line anti-Semitism, hate abroad knows no borders and poisons our communities here at home. We need to integrate our efforts both in the United States and abroad to stop the hate and keep our communities safe,” said Smith, a founding member of both the House Anti-Semitism Caucus and the Inter-Parliamentary Task Force to Combat Online Antisemitism, which is comprised of legislative-branch members from Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. The Special Envoy ‘s mission is to combat discrimination and hatred toward Jews and develop and implement foreign policy to fight anti-Semitism. Under Smith’s new law: the Special Envoy position would also: • Be the primary advisor to the U.S. government in monitoring and combating anti-Semitism; • Not be saddled with duties irrelevant to combating and anti-Semitism, nor “double-hatted” with other positions or responsibilities that distract from the central focus of anti-Semitism. Smith was especially grateful to one of his bill’s the 87 co-sponsors, Congressman Brad Schneider (D-IL), for working to pass the bipartisan bill, as well as Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jackie Rosen (D-NV) and Senator Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY), along with their staffs, for their hard work in securing passage on the Senate side, and numerous Jewish groups who fought hard for this legislation. Rabbi Aaron Kotler, President and CEO of Beth Medrash Govoha, said, “Congressman Smith has been a world leader in the effort to combat anti-Sem- itism, keeping the spotlight on the scourge of global hate. In our troubled times, we need his leadership more than ever. Smith led the 2004 Congressional effort to create a U.S. Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism. Now he has strengthened the position of Special Envoy by legislation that accords the Envoy ambassadorial rank. Good people of all faiths owe him a debt of thanks for helping keep racism at bay and for protecting civilized society.” Nathan Diament, Executive Director for the Orthodox Union Advocacy Center, said, “The Jewish community is very grateful for Rep. Chris Smith’s leadership in getting this legislation enacted. Sadly, we have seen a surge of anti-Semitic incidents around the world in recent years. With the passage of this legislation, Congress is providing powerful new tools to the State Department to lead impactful international efforts to combat what has been aptly called ‘the world’s oldest form of hatred’ and roll back the tide of anti-Jewish hate.” Chaplain Yaakov Wenger, of the National Chaplains Association, stated, “The National Chaplains Association applauds President Donald J. Trump for approving Congressman Chris Smith's important bill which will help battle the scourge of anti-Semitismworldwide. Cong. Smith has been a staunch fighter of global hate and bigotry for decades, and true advocate for human rights. The president's signing of the bill is a welcome step in battling divisiveness and hate.” Rabbi Avi Schnall, director of the New Jersey office of Agudath Israel, said, “We are very grateful for Congressman Smith’s persistence with seeing and ensuring this that bill became law,” At a time when anti-Semitism is on an alarming increase, now more than ever we need the Special Envoy to have the stature to be able to combat and do whatever we can to fight anti-Semitism. Lakewood community leaders Eli Tabak and Eli Liberman, who spearheaded Special Envoy Elan Carr's historic visit to Lakewood in 2019, said, "Con- gressman Smith’s success in elevating the position of the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism to that of Ambassador is but the latest in a long and distinguished history of his efforts to lead the global fight against hate. We greatly appreciate his focus on rooting out anti-Semitism, and the need to address it publicly and forcefully. Seeing Congressman Smith take this initiative, especially during such tumultuous times is so important to all people of good will. We are grateful for his leadership and proud that this champion of human rights represents Lakewood." On two separate occasions, the House voted overwhelmingly to approve Smith’s new law to elevate the U.S. Envoy to Ambassador-at-Large, once in September 2018 and the second time in January 2019. Each time, the Senate stalled the bill despite widespread support from numerous organizations, in- cluding the Agudath Israel, Anti-Defamation League, B’nai B’rith International, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the American Jewish Committee, Hadassah,

the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, and the Jewish Federations of North America the Orthodox Union. The Senate finally approved the bill on December 16, 2020, and it was signed by President Donald J. Trump.

Platelet Rich Plasma erapy also referred to as PRP erapy, is a progressive non-surgical treatment to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, ten- don injuries, and ligament injuries. PRP is part of a group of state-of-the-art treatments collectively referred to as Regenerative Medicine. PRP treats an injured area naturally using your body’s own growth factors to accelerate healing. It has been shown to be safe and e ec- tive for numerous joint and so tissue injuries. It has been extensively researched in numerous medical journals and publications all over the world. Some of the many uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include osteoarthritis (degenera- tive arthritis) of the spine, knee, shoulder, hip, hands, and feet, as well as menis- cus tears, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cu tears. e procedure is simple and is performed in the o ce. e PRP process begins when a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed from the arm and placed into a special container. e blood is then placed into a device called a centri- fuge which spins the blood to help the separate the portion of the blood which becomes concentrated with platelets, thereby giving the procedure its name. ese platelets are important because they release growth factors to recruit stem cells and to assist in healing an injured area naturally. Once the PRP is isolated, it is injected to the injured area under the guidance of an ultrasound machine to help accelerate healing and reduce pain.

is healing works on the simple principle that your body is perfectly capable of healing itself. Your blood contains all the essential components that the body produces to repair tissue damage. Each time you have an injury, the platelets in your blood along with growth factors, stem cells, cytokines, and other elements create a sca olding on the site. e damaged tissues use this framework to regenerate and repair. e entire process takes approximately one hour, and pa- tients are sent home the same day. Patients on average report more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. is may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In a recent study, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery gave patients with early osteoarthritis an injection of PRP and then monitored them for one year. A er one year of the PRP injection, physicians evaluated the knee cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous studies have shown that patients with osteoarthritis can lose roughly ve percent of knee cartilage per year, the Hospital for Special Surgery investigators found that a large majority of patients in their study had no further cartilage loss. At minimum PRP also prevented further knee deterioration.

REAL ESTATE Talking To Your Children About Choices When Moving To A New Home

Moving to a new home could affect your family in many ways—includ- ing your money situation. Here are tips to help you adapt the conver- sation so that your preschooler, preteen, or teenager gains money skills from the conversation that can help them later. If you are moving to a new place, it might be necessary to talk to your children about what it means, or even if it’s not necessary it might be a good opportunity. Some topics may be sensitive for your family. Keep in mind that chil- dren absorb much more than the words you say—they’re aware of your moods and attitudes too. Start a conversation when you sense it can be productive and comfortable. For young children (ages 3-5) Below are ideas for how to approach a conversation. For young children, conversations don’t always need to be about dollars and cents—instead, you can help them build the self-control, planning, and problem-solving skills they’ll need as adults. You can also try to work into the conversation other skills that your young child can work on, like practicing counting, waiting for what they want, thinking flexibly, and staying focused. Planning ahead

Ask your young child to imagine what the new home will be like. Draw a picture of the new kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, staircase, or outdoors. Tell a story about what could happen in the new home. Imagine how your clothes and furniture might fit in a different room, larger or smaller. Waiting patiently Put your moving date on a calendar and count down the days with your child. For school-age children to preteens (ages 6–12) Below are ideas for how to approach a conversation. At this age, your child can build habits, values, and rules of thumb to support future financial well-being. You can try to work into the conversation other ideas that are appropriate for your preteen, like how to help them fit their experiences into the world around them, establish a system of values, resist peer pressure, and build automatic habits. Setting up systems Figure out how close your new home is to the things you’ll need, like a grocery store, bus stop, bank or ATM, laundromat, park, or playground. Prac- tice the route to and from school. Prioritizing Reinforce the values that led you to the decision to move. Each family is unique and yours might value a home because it offers more space, less ex- pense, more convenience, a location closer to family or work, or many other factors. Helping your child understand the value you place on the new home gives your child a basis for thinking about their own choices. For teenagers and young adults Below are ideas for how to approach a conversation. You can also try to work into the conversation other ways your teenager can practice money skills, like doing their own research, comparison, and decision making. Comparison shopping Enlist your teenager in comparing options for packing and moving your furniture and other items. They can start by setting out criteria like experi- ence, availability, trust, and cost, and then gather the information for three different options. Managing day-to-day choices Talk about the process as much as you feel comfortable, like applying for a mortgage or filling out a rental application. Ask them to look into require- ments for changing your address and car information (post office, license plates, registration, and driver’s license).

“With over 4,500 institutions of higher education in America, the college admissions process can be quite overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be so stressful,” stated Stephanie Ackerman, an individual College Admissions Consultant and founder and President of Tomorrow Today College Consulting, located in Red Bank, NJ. Having a college consultant’s advice and support is key during this taxing time, and working with Ms. Ackerman helps students keep organized and on target throughout the process. Students are fortunate to have many exceptional colleges to choose from, but sometimes it can be overwhelming to decide which one would be the right fit for the student. It is important to note that a student can be happy at many schools. Ms. Ackerman aids in creating a balanced list of schools that reflects the person’s interest both academically and socially and a place where a child can find themselves happy and successful. Every client receives a one-on-one guidance beginning with an initial consult with both the student and parents. The fundamental role of an Independent Educational Consultant is to help students explore college opportunities. IECs do not get students admitted—they help students demonstrate why they deserve to be accepted at appropriately chosen schools. They help students find colleges they might not have heard of—often out of their region—and they help students put their best foot forward.

Ms. Ackerman’s services include guidance on personal statement and supplemental essays, Common and Coalition Applications, suggests edits to the extracurricular, leadership, and community activities sections, conduct mock interview sessions to prepare students for a college interview, advice on testing and prep recommendations, and create a timeline to keep students organized. When the acceptances start to roll in, she is at hand to help review options so students can make a sound decision that best suits their educational needs. Some of the most important qualities a college looks for in a student regarding his/her high school resume are class rigor, curriculum choices, and extracurricular activities. Ms. Ackerman will review students’ accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom and help build their high school resumes by reflecting on leadership, community service, and summer experiences. Some big trends in college admissions due to the Corona virus include the fact that students have been unable to visit most of the campuses. That means students that received acceptances to enter college in September 2020 and this year’s senior class haven’t been able to go on traditional college tours for the most part. Ms. Ackerman has guided her students on how to make the most of virtual visits. “Colleges had to pivot quickly and develop even more tours, panel discussions, social media, and marketing materials to reach students. I am hoping students will be able to see some of their top choice schools this spring,” Ms. Ackerman stated. Another trend on how Ms. Ackerman works with students during Covid is that all of her meetings have switched to Zoom. "In the summer and fall, I would meet with students outside, but now that it is cold we have Zoom meetings. Students are used to being on-line. Many actually prefer to work this way and will adapt as I move forward to what works for each student." Also trending is that most schools went test optional and did not require the submission of SAT or ACT scores. Some schools are continuing test option- al practices for this year and other schools are doing three-year pilot programs to see how admissions is affected. This is a welcome relief to most students. Just announced this week, the College Board will not include the essay portion with the SAT and will no longer offer SAT subject tests. For the graduating class of 2021, selective colleges in the early decision and early action stages have seen an increase in applications. It is believed that students who do not test well are sending applications to what normally would be a reach school. Also, due to fear in these uncertain times, students are sending out more applications than in past years. Ms. Ackerman received her Bachelor of Arts degree fromHampshire College and a Master of Arts from Brandeis University. For two years, she served as the Admissions Chair of the Parents Council for Elon University overseeing admissions initiatives with yield events, recruiting, summer welcome events and working with admissions counselors, students, and families around the country. In addition to owning her own computer training business work- ing with children, teens, adults, and companies, she was the technology director/instructor in a private K-8 school. She also volunteered with JBJ's Soul Kitchen Employment and Empowerment Team as a career coach. Her professional memberships include; Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) Associate Member, New Jersey IECA Associate Mem- ber, and the New Jersey Association of College Admissions Counselors. (NJACAC) She received her certificate as an Independent College Admissions Consultant from the University of California-San Diego, June 2019. “I am so blessed to be able to guide students on their college admissions journey,” stated Ms. Ackerman.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Your Home’s Health With Wood Smoke

Wood smoke is smoke from wood that is not burned completely contains a number of chemicals including carbon monoxide (CO). More than 150 people die annually from CO poisoning related to the use of home heating appliances. CO is odorless and colorless. If you use a wood stove or fireplace, install a digital CO detector, which sounds an alarm when CO levels increase. Smoke forms when wood or other organic matter burns. The smoke from wood burning is made up of a complex mixture of gases and fine particles (also called particle pollution, particulate matter, or PM). In addition to particle pollution, wood smoke contains several toxic harmful air pollutants including: • benzene, • formaldehyde, • acrolein, and • polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The more efficiently you burn wood (e.g., using an EPA-certified wood stove and dry, seasoned wood) the less smoke is created. Health effects of wood smoke Smoke may smell good, but it's not good for you. The biggest health threat from smoke is from fine particles, also called fine particulate matter or PM2.5. These micro- scopic particles can get into your eyes and respiratory system, where they may cause burning eyes, runny nose, and illnesses, such as bronchitis.

Fine particles can make asthma symptoms worse and trigger asthma attacks. Fine particles can also trigger heart attacks, stroke, irregular heart rhythms, and heart fail- ure, especially in people who are already at risk for these conditions. Who is at risk from wood smoke? Each year, about 3,000 people die in residential fires in the U.S. – mainly from smoke inhalation. A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is one of the best and cheapest ways to be warned early of a potentially deadly fire. Wood smoke can affect everyone, but the populations known to be at greater risk include children, teenagers, older adults, people with lung disease -- including asthma and COPD, people with heart disease. Research indicates that obesity or diabetes may also increase risk. New or expectant mothers may also want to take precautions to protect the health of their babies, because some studies indicate they may be at increased risk. It’s important to limit your exposure to smoke—especially if you are more susceptible than others.
