Panel clears bill to restore state landscape with native plantings The state would be required to use native plants for land management projects under legislation advanced today by the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. The bill (A1676) is sponsored by Assemblyman Ron Dancer. “This is going to save taxpayer money and benefit the environment,” said Dancer (R-Ocean). “Installing plants that are naturally suited to our environment and soils reduces maintenance and replacement costs. Indigenous plants are more likely to survive and thrive in local conditions.” The measure, which passed the Assembly by a 75-0 vote last session, requires the purchase of plants from New Jersey horticulture busi- nesses. It also calls for native plantings for reforestation projects and habitat restoration. “Native plants provide natural habitats for birds and animals that are common to the area and don’t require harmful chemicals and pesti- cides, protecting our water supplies from contamination,” Dancer said.

The Logic of Logos and Catchphrases “God Bless You” y Pam Teel

You sneeze in public and total strangers will respond by saying, “Bless you” or “God Bless You.” We do it so often and from such a young age, it has almost become an involuntary response. Did you know that the origin of the response most likely came about thousands of years ago and is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great who uttered it in the 6th century during a bubonic plague epidemic? Sneezing and coughing were obvious symptoms of one of the forms of the plague. The Pope suggested saying, “God Bless You” after a person sneezed in hopes that the prayer would protect them from an oth- erwise certain death. He mandated that everyone should beg for the Lords mercy when someone sneezed around them. Blessing people after they have sneezed has been engraved in our culture from one century to the next. Superstitions also abounded in ancient times. It was also believed that the soul resided in the head in the form of air and that when someone sneezed, they would accidently expel the soul from their body. People thought that if they asked for God’s blessings when someone sneezed, the blessing would prevent the soul from escaping. While the sound of a sneeze is universal, the responses can be vastly different from one language to another. Avoid being impolite while traveling abroad — learn the appropriate response when someone nearby lets out an “achoo!” It’s useful to know how to respond when you’re traveling. German - Gesundheit, It simply means “health,” which is used in a number of languages when someone sneezes.

Spanish -There are different responses for your first three sneezes, and they vary by region. The most well-known version tends to be used more in Latin America: salud (“health”) after the first sneeze, dinero (“money”) after the second, and amor (“love”) after the third. In

Spain, the responses are Jesús, María, José (for Jesus, Mary, and Joseph). Italian -Salute or they say, “felicita” (happiness) after someone sneezes. French -When someone sneezes, the French often say à tes/vos souhaits “to your wishes” after the first sneeze, "à tes amours" (to your loves) after the second sneeze, and "qu'elles durent toujours" (may they (loves) last forever) after the third. Dutch - As in many other languages, the first time you sneeze the Dutch wish you “health” (gezondheid). After the third time you sneeze they say- morgen mooi weer, which translates to “good weather to- morrow.” Turkish - After the first sneeze, Turkish say çok yaşa (“live long”) After the second, sağlıklı yaşa (“live healthy”). The best part in Turkish, though, is the response to the response. When you sneeze, someone says “live long,” and you reply, “And I hope you will be there to see it.”

Russian -A simple будьте здоровы (“be healthy”) will suffice. But things get a bit more interesting if you sneeze while someone else is talking. If that hap- pens, the interrupted speaker will often say, “правду говорю” or “I’m telling the truth.” In some Asian cultures such as Korean and Japanese cultures, the practice of responding to another person's sneeze does not exist.

Beginners Guide on the Seven Chakras By Pam Teel

Chakras are the circular vortexes of energy that are placed in seven differ- ent points on the spinal column. All the seven chakras are connected to the various organs and glands within the body. These chakras are responsible for distributing the life energy, which is also known as Qi or Prana. The en- tire universe is made of energy, and your body is no exception. Ancient cul- tures knew that all living things carried a life force with them. They called the centers of energy that moved inside of us the 7 chakras. Chakra is an old Sanskrit word that literally means wheel. This is because the life force, or prana, that moves inside of you is spinning and rotating. This spinning energy has 7 centers in your body, starting at the base of your spine and moving all the way up to the top of your head. In a healthy, balanced person, the 7 chakras provide the right balance of energy to every part of your body, mind, and spirit. Whenever the harmonious balance of a chakra is disrupted or blocked, the life energy also gets blocked, leading to the onset of mental, emotional, and health problems. It’s important to understand what each Chakra represents and what we can do to keep the energy flowing freely. Subtle energies flow in and out through the chakras, also known as the psychic centres. The spine is like a stem and chakras are like the flowers growing from this stem through the body and a few inches in front of the body.

The crown chakra, the highest chakra, is located at the very top of our head. It represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually. Its Emotional issues represent inner and outer beauty and pure bliss. Its physical associa- tion is to the pineal gland, brain and the nervous system. Third eye chakra is located on the forehead between the eyes. It speaks to our ability to see the big picture. Emotional issues: intuition, imagination, wis- dom, and ability to think and make decisions. Its physical association is with the pineal gland, sinuses, and eyes. Throat chakra is located on the throat. Emotional issues represent communication, self-expression of feelings and truth. Its physical association is with the thyroid, vocal chords, respiratory system, and teeth. Heart chakra is located at the center of the chest just above the heart. It’s our ability to love. Its emotional issues: love, joy, and inner peace. Its physical association is with the heart, lower lungs, thymus, circulatory system, and immune system. Solar plexus chakra is located in the abdomen in the stomach area. It speaks to your ability to be confident and in control of your life. Its emotional issues include self worth, self-confidence, and self esteem. Its physical association includes the central nervous system, pancreas, liver, digestive tract, and skin. Sacral chakra is located in the lower abdomen two inches below the navel and two inches in. It is all about our connection and ability to accept others and new experiences. Its emotional issue: sense of abundance, well-being and sexuality and pleasure. The root chakra is located at the base of the spine in the tailbone area. It represents our foundation of feeling of being grounded. Emotional issues: sur- vival, financial issues, money, and food. Physical association is with the spine, rectum, legs arms, and circulatory system. Each of the seven chakras carries a specific meaning and color. The Root Chakra defines our relationship with Mother Earth. It influences our passion, creativity, youthfulness, vitality and our basic survival instincts. It’s represented by the color red, which is also an indication for the need of logic, realistic thinking and order in our lives. It is also symbolic of our physical strength, our sexuality and the flight and fight response that tends to activate within our body when we sense danger. It’s connected with the sense of smell within the body, and it is attached to the gland known as Gonads. Sacral Chakra is symbolic of the water elements present within the human body. It is represented by the color orange, which tends to impact our ability to be happy and joyful, compassionate, creative and passionate. It also influences our desires, sexuality and our reproductive functions amongst others. The Sacral Chakra is connected with our sense of taste, and it impacts several organs and glands, including the bladder, the lymphatic system, pelvis, the large intestine and the female reproductive organs. Solar Plexus Chakra is regarded as one of the most powerful chakras that has profound influences on our personal power. It represents our personal abilities and powers, and it influences both our personal and professional success. Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy also referred to as PRP Therapy, is a progressive non-surgical treatment to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, ten- don injuries, and ligament injuries. PRP is part of a group of state-of-the-art treatments collectively referred to as Regenerative Medicine. PRP treats an injured area naturally using your body’s own growth factors to accelerate healing. It has been shown to be safe and effec- tive for numerous joint and soft tissue injuries. It has been extensively researched in numerous medical journals and publications all over the world. Some of the many uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include osteoarthritis (degenera- tive arthritis) of the spine, knee, shoulder, hip, hands, and feet, as well as menis- cus tears, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cuff tears. The procedure is simple and is performed in the office. The PRP process begins when a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed from the arm and placed into a special container. The blood is then placed into a device called a centri- fuge which spins the blood to help the separate the portion of the blood which becomes concentrated with platelets, thereby giving the procedure its name. These platelets are important because they release growth factors to recruit stem cells and to assist in healing an injured area naturally. Once the PRP is isolated, it is injected to the injured area under the guidance of an ultrasound machine to help accelerate healing and reduce pain.

This healing works on the simple principle that your body is perfectly capable of healing itself. Your blood contains all the essential components that the body produces to repair tissue damage. Each time you have an injury, the platelets in your blood along with growth factors, stem cells, cytokines, and other elements create a scaffolding on the site. The damaged tissues use this framework to regenerate and repair. The entire process takes approximately one hour, and pa- tients are sent home the same day. Patients on average report more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. This may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In a recent study, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery gave patients with early osteoarthritis an injection of PRP and then monitored them for one year. After one year of the PRP injection, physicians evaluated the knee cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous studies have shown that patients with osteoarthritis can lose roughly five percent of knee cartilage per year, the Hospital for Special Surgery investigators found that a large majority of patients in their study had no further cartilage loss. At minimum PRP also prevented further knee deterioration.

Millstone’s 6th Graders Get a Blast of the Past! By Pam Teel

The Middle School 6th graders didn’t have far to walk as they headed across Baird Road to the Historic Baird Homestead and Cultural Resource Center in the beginning of June to learn about what it was like living in the past. Hosted by the Friends of Millstone Township Historical Registered Properties for a fourth year, the students got to partake in many hands-on activities and educational lectures that included a visit to the blacksmith’s barn, where the blacksmith and his helper discussed and demonstrated how tools were made before there were machines to make them. The classes were broken up into smaller groups and the students took turns visiting the different stations that were set up on the homestead. In the Baird house, they learned about the history of the original owner Thomas Baird and what it was like to live in the 1800’s. They discussed the period furniture and the chores the people who lived there had to do to sustain their quality of life. At The Story of Milk station, the students learned the job of a milkmaid, how they get milk from a cow, and how milk is churned into butter. At the plant station, they learned about plants and how to care for them. Each child got to pot his own vegetable plant to take home with him. With seining nets and cups in hand, the students scooped water out of the pond and tested it for ph and nitrate levels. They also got to sample slides under a microscope in the microscope tent. The students also learned about how to use an apple press. They cut up their own apples and made their own cider. Lastly, the students learned about animal husbandry and how an animal’s digestive system works. They got to physically interact with some sheep and a large bunny rabbit. The topics at the different stations coincided with the children’s lessons from class. It was a great day to visit the homestead. Though the threat of rain loomed over the area, the students enjoyed being outdoors as they gathered on the front lawn and under the large trees to eat their lunch. The Friends of Millstone Township Historic Registered Properties, Friends of MTHRP for short, is a 501C3 non-profit organization dedicated to fur- thering public interest in conservation, preservation, knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the history of Millstone Township. On October 15, 2012 the Friends of MTHRP hit the ground running…and haven’t looked back since! This was the day the Thomas Baird House, 24 Baird Road, closed and the Friends became its caretakers. The Friends rallied the community and jumped in with both feet to improve the Baird Home- stead and began to ready it for visitors, community education and school programs. The TBH is an early 19th century home owned by Millstone Town- ship and financially supported solely through fundraising by the Friends group that has grown to include many generations of supporters. The first seven years have been packed with excitement, unimagined growth, trials and dedication to their visions. Credit for the successes go to all the hardworking dedicated trustees, volunteers, tenacious planning, and completion of tasks and the ability to leverage their funds to achieve maximum effect.

Their top goals for 2019 are to grow their volunteer base signifi- cantly, to increase community in- volvement across all age groups, to maintain a regular Open House schedule, to increase their annual appeal by 20 per cent so they can continue to bring forth such programs as the 6th grade field trip and to be able to once again host events at the Clarks- burg Cultural Center on a regular basis. (Formerly the Clarksburg Methodist Episcopal Church lo- cated at 512 Stagecoach Road.) Did you know…..? By Pam Teel Did you know that the Kinzua Bridge Viaduct in Pennsylvania was once the highest viaduct in the world? It was constructed as an alternative to laying an additional 8 miles of train track over rough terrain along the line leading to McKean County’s coal, lumber, and oil lands. Built of wrought iron, the original viaduct was approximately 301 feet high, 2,053 feet long, and weighed 3,105,000 pounds. The towers were a patented design called Phoenix columns. Construction began in 1881 when the stone pillars were laid on the valley floor. The whole project was completed in 1882. It was a big task for such a big structure to be completed in so short a time. As years went by and trains got longer and heavier, it became necessary to rebuild the entire bridge with steel to accommodate the extra weight from the loader train cars. It took 150 men working 10 hour shifts to complete the makeover in just 105 days but they neglected to change over one important thing. They didn’t change the wrought iron couplers over to steel on the stone piers on the ground and during a tornado in 2003, the anchor belts snapped in two and the bridge was picked up and moved around by the wind. They lost more than half of the bridge. If they only replaced every component with steel, the bridge might have had a chance. Freight travel had already stopped on the bridge in 1953. In 1963 Governor Scanton created the Kinzua Bridge State Park, which officially opened seven years later. Excursion trains were allowed to go back and forth over the bridge from Marienville Pa. through the Allegheny Mountains for some time but all trains were barred in 2001 when engineers found that parts of the steel structures were rusted through. In 2003, work began to restore the bridge but Mother Nature intervened. 11 towers from the center of the bridge were torn from their concrete bases and twisted by the winds. They still remain today on the valley floor for all to see the destructive force of Mother Nature. A skywalk was built in 2011 using the remaining part of the viaduct, allowing park visitors to walk a portion of the Kinzua Bridge. The pedestrian walk- way leads to an observation deck that gives a towering view of the Kinzua Creek Valley and a glimpse of the twisted steel at the valley floor. It also has a n area where there is a glass floor. The Kinzua State Park has picnic areas, hiking trails, educational programs, tent camping, hike/bike areas and many scenic overlooks. It’s located at 296 Viaduct Rd., Mt. Jewett, Pa. The name Kinzua comes from the Iroquois. It means Fish on a Spear. Kinzua Bridge State Park is close to three state parks, where visitors can enjoy recreation, education, and other activities. Elk State Park -The 3,192-acre Elk State Park offers a short hiking trail, picnic tables, hunting, and camping. Bendigo State Park and Chapman State Park are also close by.

All you have to do is take up the tab, put one of the holes through the hook that will hang on the closet rod, and the other hole can hang another hanger. You will be able to put double the clothes in your closet with this one. 3: The Floor The floor is the perfect place to store other clothing items. Group your short hanging items all on one side, and put the long hanging items on the other side. Under the short hanging items, there is plenty of space to store more things. Add a shoe rack to keep all your shoes stored and organized. 4: The Door When organizing your clothes, you should never forget the door. You can add hooks, and hanging shoe organizing, or line it with cork board to hang jewelry. The door is a great way to organizing any accessories you have. 5: Baskets and Umbrella Stands Even after organizing all of our clothes, there are always some odds and ends to be put away. You may have items such as small umbrellas, yoga mats, and beach towels that do not have a home. By using a basket or an umbrella stand in particular, you will be able to secure a home for all these items.

Build a network of advisors when buying a new home Buying a home and choosing a mortgage can be complicated. It helps to have people you can talk things over with. People tend to do best when they rely on a network of trusted advisors – not just one person – to help them through the process. Your friends, relatives, and co-workers can all serve as advisors in this process – they don’t have to be professionals. 1. Make a list of friends, family, co-workers, or other people you trust who have bought a home or refinanced a mortgage recently 4. You should be able to talk frankly about money issues with at least two people. Also include people that you’d feel comfortable talking to about their own home buying experience, and people you can ask for recommen- dations on lenders or real estate agents. Solar heat absorbed through windows and roofs can increase cooling costs, and incorporating shade from landscaping elements can help reduce this solar heat gain. Shading and evapotranspiration (the process by which a plant actively moves and releases water vapor) from trees can reduce surrounding air temperatures as much as 6° F. Because cool air settles near the ground, air temperatures directly under trees can be as much as 25°F cooler than air temperatures above nearby blacktop. Using shade effectively requires you to know the size, shape, and location of the moving shadow that your shading device casts. Also, homes in cool regions may never overheat and may not require shading. Therefore, you need to know what landscape shade strategies will work best in your regional climate and your microclimate. Trees are available in the appropriate sizes, densities, and shapes for almost any shade application. To block solar heat in the summer but let much of it in during the winter, use deciduous trees. To provide continuous shade or to block heavy winds, use dense evergreen trees or shrubs. Deciduous trees with high, spreading crowns (i.e., leaves

and branches) can be planted to the south of your home to provide maximum summertime roof shading. Trees with crowns lower to the ground are more appropriate to the west, where shade is needed from lower afternoon sun angles. Trees should not be planted on the southern sides of solar-heated homes in cold climates, because the branches of these deciduous trees will block some winter sun. Although a slow-growing tree may require many years of growth before it shades your roof, it will generally live longer than a fast-growing tree. Also, because slow-growing trees often have deeper roots and stronger branches, they are less prone to breakage by windstorms or heavy snow loads. Slow- growing trees can also be more drought resistant than fast-growing trees. Plant trees far enough away from the home so that when they mature, their root systems do not damage the foundation and branches do not damage the roof. A 6-foot to 8-foot (1.8-meter to 2.4-meter) deciduous tree planted near your home will begin shading windows the first year. Depending on the species and the home, the tree will shade the roof in 5 to 10 years. Trees, shrubs, and groundcover plants can also shade the ground and pavement around the home. This reduces heat radiation and cools the air before it reaches your home's walls and windows. Use a large bush or row of shrubs to shade a patio or driveway. Plant a hedge to shade a sidewalk. Build a trellis for climbing vines to shade a patio area. Vines can also shade walls during their first growing season. A lattice or trellis with climbing vines, or a planter box with trailing vines, shades the home's perimeter while admitting cooling breezes to the shaded area. Shrubs planted close to the house will fill in rapidly and begin shading walls and windows within a few years. However, avoid allowing dense foliage to grow immediately next to a home where wetness and continual humidity could cause problems. Well-landscaped homes in wet areas allow winds to flow around the home, keeping the home and its surrounding soil reasonably dry. To ensure lasting performance of energy-saving landscaping, use plant species that are adapted to the local climate.
